Yes, on an OLED it can contribute to permanent burn-in, although moving the logo is safer than leaving it fixed. Motion spreads the bright pixels over a larger area, reducing concentrated wear, but repeated, bright exposure still adds to cumulative uneven pixel aging. LCD panels are much less prone to permanent burn-in; they can nevertheless show temporary image retention after a static picture remains for a long time.
A screensaver is therefore a risk reducer, not a guarantee. The most reliable protection is to turn the display off quickly when idle, vary the content, avoid unnecessarily high brightness for static elements, and keep the panel’s built-in compensation features enabled.

What happens when a logo moves around the screen?
Every pixel in an OLED emits its own light. Organic materials age as they produce light, and pixels that spend more time at higher brightness age faster than pixels used less often. Burn-in is the visible result of that uneven aging: the outline or brightness pattern of a logo remains faintly visible while other content is displayed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA bouncing logo changes which pixels are driven. Compared with a stationary logo, each pixel is illuminated for less of the total time, so the wear is less concentrated. That is why motion generally lowers the risk. It does not reset the pixels, however. If the same bright logo appears for hours every day, the panel can still accumulate a different wear pattern in the areas it repeatedly visits.

RTINGS’ long-term OLED test illustrates the distinction. Televisions were run for 20 hours a day, seven days a week, for about two years (the 2017–2019 test, with results reported on its 2020 results page). Long-running static material produced burn-in, and logos that were cycled around the screen eventually produced visible cumulative effects under that extreme schedule. The test used a small sample and does not establish a universal number of hours at which every OLED will burn in.
LCD technology works differently. A liquid-crystal panel uses a separate backlight, so its pixels do not age in the same light-emitting way as OLED subpixels. Permanent OLED-style burn-in is uncommon on LCDs, but temporary image retention can still occur in some models after prolonged static display.
Burn-in, image retention and temporary afterimage: what is the difference?
Permanent OLED wear
Permanent burn-in is a physical, cumulative change in relative pixel output. The mark remains visible when you switch to unrelated video, a white test screen or another input. It normally cannot be removed by changing channels or waiting a few minutes, because the affected pixels have aged differently from their neighbors.

Temporary retention
Temporary retention is an afterimage that fades as the panel is driven with changing content. RTINGS reports that temporary retention usually disappears within seconds or minutes. LCDs can show this behavior, and OLEDs can as well, especially after a high-contrast static image. A fading afterimage is not proof that permanent burn-in has occurred.

Why the distinction matters
A logo that is briefly visible after you leave a menu may be harmless retention. A logo that remains in the same place across many types of content, after the display has had time to cool and refresh, is more consistent with uneven permanent wear. Photographing the screen with a neutral gray or white image can help you document a pattern, but it cannot reverse the damage.
How OLED and LCD risk compares
| Factor | OLED | LCD |
|---|---|---|
| Primary concern | Cumulative uneven pixel wear that can become permanent burn-in | Usually temporary image retention; permanent burn-in is uncommon |
| Effect of a moving logo | Reduces concentration of wear but does not eliminate cumulative exposure | Generally reduces the chance of a prolonged static afterimage |
| Static-image sensitivity | Higher, particularly at high brightness and with repeated exposure | Model-dependent; some panels retain images after long static display |
| Evidence from long-term testing | RTINGS observed burn-in from static content and eventually from cycled logos under a 20-hours-per-day schedule | RTINGS observed no burn-in on the VA and IPS LCD televisions in its test |
| Built-in mitigations | May include pixel shift, panel or pixel refresh, logo luminance control and automatic screen-off | Usually relies on screen-off, sleep and screensaver settings; features vary by model |
The LCD result is not a promise for every LCD monitor or television. Dell Technologies advises that owners of specified Latitude 7320 and 7350 Detachable LCD models should not keep one static screen displayed for over 12 hours at a time. That 12-hour guidance applies to those models and should not be generalized to every LCD panel.
Can a moving screensaver prevent OLED burn-in?
No. It is a partial mitigation. A moving image lowers the dwell time on any individual pixel, but a logo that repeatedly traverses the same path can still expose a band of pixels over and over. The risk rises when the logo is large, bright, high-contrast or shown for many hours each day.
Exposure pattern matters as much as motion. A logo that takes a few seconds to cross the screen but then pauses, follows a narrow route or returns to the same corners can create a repeated pattern. A dimmer, smaller mark that changes position unpredictably is less demanding than a brilliant, fixed-color emblem. Neither pattern can be assigned a guaranteed safe lifetime, because OLED construction, compensation algorithms, temperature and individual usage all differ.

Sony describes the underlying limitation this way: “Due to the characteristics of the materials used to achieve high-definition imaging, an OLED TV screen may experience image retention if an image is continuously displayed for long periods or when the same image is displayed repeatedly.” The statement covers both a continuously displayed logo and a repeatedly displayed one—the two situations a bouncing screensaver is intended to improve but cannot eliminate.
What protections should you enable?
Set an aggressive idle timeout
The safest idle image is no image. Configure the operating system or television to turn the panel off, sleep or enter standby after the shortest delay that fits your routine. A screensaver that keeps displaying a logo is preferable to a fixed desktop, but powering down the panel removes the logo exposure altogether.
Use the panel’s compensation features
OLED televisions and monitors may provide menu options named pixel shift, panel refresh, pixel cleaning, logo luminance adjustment or similar. Enable automatic operation unless the manufacturer specifically says otherwise. These controls vary by model and region, and a long refresh cycle may require the display to remain in standby.
Recommended Free Tools
LG documents two automatic intervals on supported OLED televisions: a pixel-cleaning operation after four cumulative hours and a longer pixel-refresher cycle after 2,000 cumulative hours. The exact labels and behavior differ by model. Do not interrupt a compensation cycle by unplugging the set unless the manual tells you to do so.

Reduce unnecessary brightness
Lowering OLED light output, contrast or the screensaver logo’s brightness reduces the energy delivered to the pixels. Use the lowest setting that remains comfortable in your room, particularly when the logo is displayed for long idle periods. This is a risk-reduction measure, not a guarantee; a dim logo shown repeatedly can still produce uneven wear over a sufficiently long period.
Vary the content and position
Rotate channels, applications, games and background images instead of leaving one interface on screen. If your screensaver offers movement options, choose a mode that changes position across much of the panel rather than one that follows a narrow loop. Avoid leaving static news tickers, scoreboards, desktop taskbars or game HUDs visible for entire workdays.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How long is too long for a static image?
There is no universal safe-hour threshold for OLED. The RTINGS schedule—20 hours per day, every day, for roughly two years—was deliberately extreme, and its small sample cannot predict the lifetime of your particular panel. Normal use may produce no visible mark for years, while a brighter, hotter or more repetitive pattern can accelerate wear.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallFor LCD, Dell’s published warning is specific: on Latitude 7320 and 7350 Detachable models, keeping one static screen for over 12 hours can lead to image retention, with higher temperatures increasing the risk. Treat that as a model-specific limit, not a general LCD rule. If a monitor’s manual gives a shorter interval, follow the manual.
Best Value
Temperature is relevant because heat can accelerate panel aging and retention. Keep ventilation clear, avoid enclosing a television in a tight cabinet, and do not place heat-producing equipment directly behind the display. These steps support the panel’s normal operating conditions but cannot compensate for an always-on static logo.
Does a television’s built-in screensaver solve the problem?
Not automatically. LG states that its supported television screensaver activates after approximately two minutes of inactivity in the documented scenario. That is useful protection against a paused video or menu, but the result depends on what the screensaver displays. A bright, stationary logo would still be a static image; a moving logo reduces concentration of exposure but remains an image on an OLED panel.
Check whether your television can turn the screen completely off, not merely replace the input with a logo. If the set offers both a screensaver and an automatic power-off or screen-off timer, use the shorter practical screen-off period for long absences. On a computer, configure the display to sleep before the screensaver starts, or use a short moving screensaver only for the brief interval before sleep.

What to do if you see a logo after using the display
- Change to varied content. Play ordinary video or cycle through different full-screen images for several minutes. If the mark fades, it was likely temporary retention.
- Allow the panel to cool and rest. Stop displaying the static source and leave the display in its normal standby state so its automatic compensation can run.
- Run a manufacturer-approved refresh only when appropriate. Use the documented pixel-cleaning or panel-refresh command for your model; do not repeatedly force long cycles, because they also consume panel life.
- Check with neutral test colors. A gray, white or red full-screen image can reveal whether the pattern persists across unrelated content.
- Escalate persistent marks. If the logo remains after normal varied use and the approved refresh cycle, record the model, purchase date and photos, then consult the manufacturer’s support and warranty terms. Do not expect a cleaning kit or screen protector to reverse uneven pixel wear.
Practical settings by display type
| Display | Recommended setup | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| OLED television | Use the shortest practical screen-off timer; keep pixel shift, logo dimming and automatic refresh enabled; avoid maximum brightness for idle graphics | Limits repeated high-output exposure and lets compensation routines operate |
| OLED computer monitor | Set operating-system display sleep to a short interval; hide or rotate fixed taskbars and HUDs; use a moving screensaver only as a temporary buffer | Computer interfaces often keep the same elements in the same places for long sessions |
| VA or IPS LCD | Use display sleep or a screensaver for long idle periods; follow the model’s image-retention warning and keep ventilation clear | Permanent burn-in is uncommon, but temporary retention is model-dependent |
Bottom line for a bouncing logo
A bouncing logo is safer than a fixed logo because it distributes light over more pixels, but on OLED it can still contribute to cumulative burn-in when it is bright, large, repetitive and displayed for long periods. On LCD, the usual outcome is temporary retention rather than permanent burn-in, yet some models can retain a static image after more than 12 hours. Use motion as one layer of protection, then rely on short screen-off timeouts, varied content, moderate brightness and the display maker’s compensation features.
