Students take academic classes alongside campus chores and farm work, including harvesting, caring for livestock, washing dishes, and cleaning classrooms. The article says students spend about eight hours a week on farm work and chores and take part in a four-day wilderness trip. It also describes a strict break from technology. These details and the nearly $40,000 tuition figure are reported by The Independent; check with the school for current program details and pricing.
Olney Friends School: agriculture woven into academics
Olney Friends School describes its 350-acre farm as part of its academic program. Its examples include testing soil composition and pH, calculating crop yields and animal feed, and studying crop rotation, composting, cover crops, and water conservation. Does farm-school experience improve college application odds?
Farm work can give a student specific experiences to explain: a responsibility they took on, a problem they worked through, or a connection between classroom learning and practical work. That is different from evidence that colleges give applicants a general admissions advantage for attending an agricultural program.

The Independent quotes Lumiere Education co-founder Stephen Turban arguing that agricultural programs can demonstrate initiative, research, data collection, problem-solving, and the application of academic study. The same article quotes admissions consultant Adam Nguyen’s counterpoint: “Admissions officers don’t reward expensive randomness. That will backfire, for sure.” These are competing opinions, not measured admissions outcomes. No independent causal study or admissions-outcome dataset establishing an admissions benefit was verified.
Olney says that “This type of authentic education is what universities are increasingly looking for in college applicants.” That is a school’s promotional claim. Its academics page also advertises a “100% College Acceptance Rate,” but the page does not provide a cohort definition in the result reviewed, and the figure does not establish that farm participation caused the outcome.

The underlying years are not stated in the article text reviewed, and these are secondary-reported figures; ask Mountain School for current enrollment and aid information.

How families can assess whether the experience is worth it
Compare the program as an educational choice first, not as a shortcut to admission. Ask for specifics in writing and consider whether the student wants the day-to-day experience as well as the résumé line.
- Length and eligibility: Is it a semester or a full school year, and which grades may attend?
- Academic fit: What classes are offered, how do credits transfer, and how does the farm work connect to coursework?
- Daily demands: How many hours go to farm work and chores? What work is expected, and what technology restrictions or outdoor requirements apply?
- Total cost: What does tuition include? Which fees, travel costs, or other expenses are additional?
- Aid and current outcomes: What financial aid is available, how is it awarded, and what data does the school provide about college destinations and the cohort behind any acceptance-rate claim?
- Student motivation: Would the student choose the program if it did not make an application look unusual?
A distinctive activity is most meaningful when a student can explain why they chose it and what they learned. The experience may be valuable on its own; neither a school’s marketing nor a consultant’s opinion can establish that it raises an individual applicant’s odds.
