Likely yes. YouTube describes channel memberships as monthly payments for member perks, separately from Super Chat and Super Stickers, which depend on live chat. Its published membership requirements do not list live chat as a condition. That makes membership earnings with chat disabled a reasonable policy-based inference for an eligible channel—not an explicit YouTube guarantee for one continuous 24/7 stream. YouTube’s livestream monetization guidance and published eligibility requirements are the relevant starting points.
How memberships differ from chat-based payments
Channel memberships are recurring monthly payments from viewers in exchange for members-only perks. Super Chat and Super Stickers are purchases associated with messages or images in live chat. YouTube lists all of these among livestream monetization options, but their mechanics differ: memberships are a channel-level program, while Super Chat and Super Stickers rely on live chat being available. YouTube’s Commerce Products monetization policies describe memberships as monthly payments for perks; its live-stream monetization guidance treats Super Chat and Super Stickers as Live Chat features.

What turning chat off changes
Disabling chat affects viewers’ ability to post and interact in that stream. It may also remove chat-based membership interactions: YouTube says a new member joining during a livestream can send a message in live chat, and membership milestone messages are also live-chat interactions. If chat is off, viewers may not be able to use those interactions there. The guidance reviewed does not say that losing these interactions disables the membership program itself. YouTube’s membership benefits guidance describes these live-chat interactions.

Check whether your channel can offer memberships
Running a livestream does not by itself make a channel eligible. YouTube’s current published membership requirements include the following thresholds and conditions; they can change, so verify the live help page and your YouTube Studio status before relying on them. The figures below are the thresholds reported on YouTube’s current page, accessed in 2026—not independently verified performance statistics. See YouTube’s eligibility guidance.
- At least 500 subscribers.
- At least three public uploads in the last 90 days.
- Either 3,000 qualified public long-form watch hours in the last 365 days or 3 million qualified public Shorts views in the last 90 days.
- The creator is at least 18 and lives in a country where memberships are available.
- The channel has accepted the Commerce Product Module or the earlier Commerce Product Addendum and meets YouTube’s channel and content restrictions.
YouTube’s page also says updated Partner Program terms are scheduled to begin February 1, 2027, with creators asked to review and accept them by January 31, 2027. Check the current terms and Studio prompts, particularly as those dates approach or pass.

Enable and configure memberships in YouTube Studio
- Check eligibility: open YouTube Studio and review the Earn area for channel-membership availability and any required Partner Program steps. Confirm your channel meets the current requirements on YouTube’s earn-money help page.
- Set up the offer: use YouTube Studio’s memberships setup to enable the feature and create membership levels and perks. YouTube’s setup instructions cover enabling memberships and configuring levels and perks; they do not list enabling live chat as a setup condition.
- Choose the stream’s chat setting: set chat to off if you do not want posts, or use members-only chat if you want only members to post while the public can still watch. These are different choices; neither should be treated as a substitute for checking membership eligibility.
- Check the live stream and channel policies: make sure the channel and content comply with YouTube’s applicable monetization rules, and review the stream’s current settings in Studio. YouTube’s channel monetization policies apply independently of the chat setting.
What YouTube’s guidance does—and does not—establish
The policy-based case for “likely yes” is that YouTube documents memberships as a monthly-perks feature, lists them separately from chat-based Supers, and does not include live chat in the published membership requirements. But the official guidance reviewed does not expressly guarantee that a single continuous 24/7 livestream with all chat disabled will remain eligible for membership revenue. Your channel’s current feature status, stream settings, and compliance still matter; verify them in Studio rather than treating the inference as a platform promise.

If you operate the stream yourself, make sure your streaming setup and internet connection remain available, and check YouTube Studio if the broadcast stops or its settings change. A continuously running stream is a separate operational issue from whether the channel can offer memberships: the membership rules do not, by themselves, confirm that a particular 24/7 broadcast will stay live or earn.
