Can a 24/7 YouTube Livestream Earn Affiliate Commission From Its Replay?

Yes, potentially—but only if a replay is available and viewable, and it contains an eligible affiliate link or product tag that leads to an attributed qualifying purchase. The biggest catch is that YouTube says a livestream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. A continuous 24/7 broadcast is therefore not a dependable way to create one intact replay for affiliate links or product tags.

How a replay can earn affiliate commission

Affiliate commission is separate from YouTube advertising revenue. A replay can create an affiliate opportunity through either an external affiliate link in an eligible YouTube placement or a native YouTube Shopping product tag, if the creator, product, and content qualify. Neither route guarantees clicks, sales, commission attribution, or a particular payout.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Route What viewers use What needs to be in place What is not guaranteed
External affiliate link A tracked merchant URL, such as one in the replay description The replay is viewable; the link placement supports clickable external URLs; advanced features are enabled; and the destination and promotion comply with YouTube policy and the affiliate program’s terms Merchant acceptance, conversion, attribution, commission rate, or earnings
YouTube Shopping affiliate tag A native tag for a participating product The creator and product meet applicable Shopping eligibility; the product participates; and tagging is available for the content Product eligibility in every case, a purchase, or a fixed commission rate

Will YouTube save a 24/7 livestream as a replay?

Do not assume so. YouTube’s archive guidance says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all. “May not” is not a guarantee that every long stream will fail, just as the under-12-hour guidance is not a promise that every stream will be archived. YouTube’s livestream terms describe archiving as an option, not a guaranteed result.

Because a 24/7 stream runs far beyond that threshold, it carries a material risk of not producing one intact replay. If the replay is missing or unavailable to viewers, it cannot serve as the dependable place for replay-description affiliate links or replay product tags. Consider shorter broadcasts or retaining a local recording as operational options, but do not assume a local file is equivalent to a YouTube replay in reach, link behavior, or Shopping features.

Can affiliate links go in a replay description?

They can, subject to YouTube’s link controls and policies. YouTube lists links in long-form video descriptions and comments among clickable locations, but creators must have advanced features enabled for clickable external links. Check the channel’s feature access and the actual replay description before relying on a link.

YouTube’s external links policy states: “Affiliate content doesn’t violate YouTube’s Terms of Use.” The same policy warns that excessive affiliate posting on accounts dedicated to affiliate content may violate spam policies. This is not blanket approval for every destination or affiliate offer: links must not lead to prohibited or unsafe content, and the relevant affiliate program’s terms still apply.

Can you tag products on a live replay?

YouTube Shopping is a distinct route from putting an external affiliate URL in the description. YouTube’s live Shopping guidance says creators must meet Shopping eligibility criteria and tag products they want to promote. It recommends tagging relevant products in the order they appear and says creators should tell viewers they may earn commission. The guidance also recommends tagging relevant existing content; check YouTube Studio to confirm whether tagging is available for the specific replay and product.

YouTube says Shopping commissions may be earned when viewers buy products tagged in videos, Shorts, and live streams. In some cases, a commission may apply when a tag takes viewers to a merchant site or app where they buy other products. The rate displayed when tagging is an estimate: the payout uses the rate on the purchase date, and merchants can change rates. No particular rate, attribution window, or expected return is established here.

YouTube’s live Shopping page cites an increase of over 25% in watch time for videos that help people shop on YouTube, based on YouTube Internal Data, 2024, comparing 2023 watch time across VOD, Shorts, and live. That is YouTube’s own internal-data claim—not independent evidence and not a promise of affiliate earnings.

Affiliate commission is not replay ad revenue

A monetized replay may separately earn YouTube watch-page ad or Premium revenue if the channel has accepted the required Watch Page Monetization Module. YouTube says Analytics can break out ad revenue from live streams and live replays. That reporting concerns YouTube revenue; affiliate commission depends on a working link or eligible tag and an attributed qualifying purchase under the applicable program. See YouTube’s YouTube Partner Program monetization guidance for the module requirement.

Make a 24/7 broadcast more useful for affiliate referrals

  • Plan for the archive risk. A stream running continuously for 24 hours or more may not be captured as a replay. Do not promise one intact replay as the basis for an affiliate campaign.
  • Make the replay link usable. If using an external affiliate URL, confirm advanced features are enabled and that the description link is clickable.
  • Check tags and eligibility in Studio. For YouTube Shopping, verify creator eligibility, participating-product status, and the tagging controls for that content.
  • Be clear with viewers. Disclose that purchases may earn you a commission, and follow the affiliate program’s disclosure and promotion rules.
  • Keep expectations grounded. Neither a link nor a tag ensures a sale or commission, and rates can change.
