A 12-inch MacBook can still receive updates, but only within its final supported macOS branch. The Early 2015 model tops out at macOS Big Sur and received Big Sur 11.7.11 on February 2, 2026. The Early 2016 model tops out at macOS Monterey, while the 2017 model has a Monterey-generation ceiling and is excluded from current major macOS releases. Monterey has no newer release listed in Apple’s security index after version 12.7.6 on July 29, 2024, so 2016 and 2017 owners should not assume they are still receiving current security patches.
The short answer
There is no single update answer for every 12-inch MacBook. Apple sold three Retina generations—2015, 2016 and 2017—and each has a different support position.

- Early 2015 (MacBook8,1): macOS Big Sur is the newest officially compatible major release. Apple recorded Big Sur 11.7.11 on February 2, 2026.
- Early 2016 (MacBook9,1): macOS Monterey is the newest officially compatible major release. Apple’s index shows Monterey 12.7.6 on July 29, 2024, with no later Monterey entry through October 15, 2026.
- 2017 (MacBook10,1): the model has a Monterey-generation ceiling and does not appear in compatibility lists for current major releases. The same Monterey security evidence applies: no release later than 12.7.6 is listed.
That means the 2015 computer has documented security-update activity in 2026, while the 2016 and 2017 computers should be treated as outside Apple’s current Monterey patch stream. All three are legacy Macs rather than current-release devices.
How to identify your exact 12-inch MacBook
Case design and screen size are not enough to determine support. Use Apple’s built-in model information before deciding whether an update is available.

Find the model year in About This Mac
- Open the Apple menu in the upper-left corner.
- Choose About This Mac.
- Read the model name and year shown in the overview. If a serial number or model identifier is displayed, record that as well.
- Compare the result with the table below. Do not install software intended for a different MacBook generation simply because both computers are 12-inch models.
| 12-inch MacBook generation | Apple identifier | Newest official macOS ceiling | Security evidence dated in Apple’s index |
|---|---|---|---|
| Retina, Early 2015 | MacBook8,1 | macOS Big Sur | Big Sur 11.7.11, February 2, 2026 |
| Retina, Early 2016 | MacBook9,1 | macOS Monterey | Monterey 12.7.6, July 29, 2024 |
| Retina, 2017 | MacBook10,1 | Monterey-generation ceiling; no current major-release support | No Monterey release later than 12.7.6 appears in the index through October 15, 2026 |
If About This Mac shows a different product, such as a MacBook Air or MacBook Pro, this guide does not establish its support ceiling. Use the support information for that model instead.
What each model can officially install
Early 2015: Big Sur is the final major release
Apple lists macOS Big Sur as the newest compatible operating system for MacBook8,1. The computer cannot officially move to a newer major macOS branch through Apple’s normal compatibility route. A later point release within Big Sur is different from a new major release: it can include fixes without changing the computer’s maximum supported branch.
Apple’s security-release index records macOS Big Sur 11.7.11, dated February 2, 2026. The entry says, “This update has no published CVE entries.” That wording means Apple published no CVE entries for that particular update; it does not certify that the Mac is immune to every possible security problem.

Apple lists macOS Monterey as the newest compatible operating system for MacBook9,1. The machine is therefore limited to Monterey rather than current major releases such as the versions Apple now targets at newer Mac models.

The latest Monterey item shown in Apple’s security index is Monterey 12.7.6, dated July 29, 2024. The index contains entries for newer macOS generations in 2025 and 2026, but no later Monterey release. On the evidence of that published index, an Early 2016 owner should regard Monterey as outside the current security-patch stream as of October 15, 2026.
2017: no current major-release path
The 2017 12-inch model is identified as MacBook10,1. It does not appear in Apple’s current compatibility lists for newer major macOS releases. Its practical ceiling is the Monterey generation, but the security index does not show a Monterey update after 12.7.6.
Do not interpret “Monterey-generation ceiling” as evidence that a new Monterey patch is still scheduled. It describes the last supported branch, not a promise of continuing maintenance.
Security updates versus major macOS upgrades
These are separate questions:
- Major upgrade: moving from one macOS generation to another, such as Big Sur to Monterey. Hardware compatibility determines whether Apple offers that path.
- Point or security update: a release inside an existing branch, such as Big Sur 11.7.11 or Monterey 12.7.6.
A Mac can be unable to install the newest major release yet still receive point updates for its final branch. That is what the 2015 model’s Big Sur 11.7.11 release demonstrates. Conversely, reaching a branch’s maximum version does not guarantee that Apple will continue publishing patches indefinitely. The Monterey record illustrates this distinction: version 12.7.6 is documented, but no newer Monterey release appears through the stated date.

Security-index dates are also not the same as the date a particular Mac checks for an update. If Software Update reports that no update is available, confirm the installed version and model before assuming the service is malfunctioning.
What the support ceiling means for apps and browsers
Apple’s compatibility ceiling does not instantly make a Mac unusable. It does mean that software developers can eventually require a newer macOS than the computer can install. App and browser compatibility should therefore be treated as a practical risk, not as a guaranteed cutoff date.
Check requirements before relying on an application
- Look at the developer’s stated minimum macOS version for every essential application.
- Check whether the current release or only an older release supports Big Sur or Monterey.
- Confirm that security-sensitive services, password managers, video-conferencing tools and work systems still support the installed browser and operating system.
- Do not assume that an app’s ability to launch means it will continue receiving security fixes.
For light web use, document editing and offline tasks, an older Mac may remain functional. A browser that still opens websites is not proof that every modern web standard, account-protection feature or security fix is current. If the machine is used for banking, business administration or confidential files, the absence of a current patch stream should carry more weight than whether basic browsing still works.

| Your priority | Reasonable choice | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Occasional offline work, reading or travel use | Keep it if the battery, storage and keyboard are reliable | Backups, needed app versions and ability to obtain the last compatible updates |
| General web use with low-risk accounts | Keep temporarily with caution | Browser support, password hygiene and whether required sites function correctly |
| Banking, work administration or sensitive data | Plan a move to a Mac that receives current security releases | Whether your essential services require a newer browser or macOS |
| Current macOS features and new applications | Replace rather than rely on the 12-inch model | Application minimum versions and the target Mac’s supported releases |
A replacement is not required merely because the computer cannot install the newest macOS. The decision turns on risk, software requirements, battery condition and how much of your work occurs online. However, a computer that has left the active security stream should not be treated like a fully supported daily driver.

How to check for the last available update
- Identify the model: Apple menu > About This Mac. Record the year or identifier.
- Confirm the installed version: In the same window, note the macOS name and version number.
- Open Software Update: On Big Sur or Monterey, open the Apple menu, choose System Preferences, then Software Update.
- Install only the update offered for that Mac: Keep the Mac connected to power and allow the restart to finish. Do not close the lid during the installation.
- Check again after restarting: Reopen Software Update and About This Mac to verify the version. If no update is offered, compare your model and version with Apple’s published compatibility and security-release information.
- Test essential software: Open the browser, work apps and services you depend on. An operating-system update does not guarantee that third-party software remains supported.
Make a current backup before any operating-system installation. Keep enough free storage for the installer and avoid interrupting the process. If an update repeatedly fails, record the exact alert, restart, check power and storage, and try Software Update again; do not erase the Mac as a first response.
Charging equipment for the 12-inch MacBook
The 2017 technical specifications identify USB-C as the charging interface and list a 30W USB-C Power Adapter and a USB-C Charge Cable. A compatible 30W USB-C power adapter or USB-C charging cable is the directly relevant replacement accessory when the original charger is missing or damaged.
- Match the connector and USB-C charging capability, not just the shape of the plug.
- Use a charger rated for the Mac’s requirements; higher-wattage USB-C power supplies may work in some setups, but verify compatibility before purchase.
- Inspect the cable for fraying, heat damage or intermittent charging.
- If charging stops after movement, test another compatible cable and power adapter before concluding that the Mac itself has failed.
A replacement charger does not extend macOS support. It only keeps the hardware powered so you can use the final compatible system and apply updates that Apple still publishes for that branch.

“My Mac says it is up to date. Is that a problem?”
Not necessarily. The message can mean that you already have the newest update Apple offers for your model and branch. Compare the installed version with the model-specific ceiling and the dated security entries rather than expecting the latest macOS name to appear.

“Can I install a newer macOS unofficially?”
This evidence establishes Apple’s official compatibility limits only. Unofficial patching can change hardware support, update reliability and security assumptions, so it should not be presented as equivalent to an Apple-supported installation. If dependable security coverage is the goal, a supported Mac is the more predictable solution.
“Does the 2015 Mac have better support than the 2016?”
For the specific security evidence available on October 15, 2026, yes: Big Sur 11.7.11 is dated February 2, 2026, while the latest Monterey entry is dated July 29, 2024. The model year alone does not determine this; the final macOS branch does.
“Is Monterey still supported?”
Apple’s index documents Monterey 12.7.6 from July 29, 2024, but no later Monterey release through October 15, 2026. Owners should therefore treat Monterey as outside the current security-patch stream, even though Monterey remains the final officially compatible branch for the Early 2016 model and the practical ceiling for the 2017 model.
Verdict
The Early 2015 12-inch MacBook can still receive a documented Big Sur security release in 2026, but it cannot move to a current major macOS version. The Early 2016 and 2017 models stop at the Monterey generation, whose latest indexed release is 12.7.6 from July 2024. Keep one for low-risk, offline or light-use tasks if it remains reliable; for sensitive online work or software that demands current macOS, plan to replace it with a Mac inside Apple’s active support range.
