For a SaaS business serving Cameroon, the hard part of accepting local payments may be getting merchant approval and production access—not writing the API request. You can integrate directly with MTN or Orange Money, or use a unified API or hosted checkout that may bring several payment methods together. The right route depends on confirmed eligibility, settlement terms, customer checkout needs, and how reliably you can verify payment status.
Choose between direct operator APIs and a unified checkout
Direct integrations give you a closer relationship with each payment provider, but you may need separate onboarding, credentials, and operational processes. A unified provider can consolidate methods behind one integration, though it adds another vendor whose country coverage, fees, settlement, support, and compliance you must verify.

| Route | What the documentation describes | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| MTN Payments V1 | MTN lists Cameroon as supported and describes merchant and customer payments, status queries, payment history, and reversals. The API uses OAuth 2.0 bearer authentication. MTN developer documentation | Whether your business qualifies for Cameroon production access, plus onboarding steps, fees, and settlement terms. Country support on a product page is not individual merchant approval. |
| Orange Money Web Payment / M Payment | Orange documents the service for registered merchants in Cameroon. Merchants subscribe, integrate the API, and can test before commercial launch. Orange Developer documentation | Required local legal and compliance documents, subscription details, production access, and commercial terms. |
| Unified API or hosted checkout | ElyonPay documents Cameroon coverage for MTN and Orange Mobile Money, XAF, SDKs, sandbox testing, payment links, direct payments, and optional webhooks. ElyonPay documentation Nkap Pay documents XAF, Mobile Money, hosted checkout, status retrieval, and signed webhooks; its documentation says payment mode can vary by country configuration. Nkap Pay documentation | Confirm the actual methods and payment mode enabled for your merchant account, along with fees, settlement, support, production operation, and security controls. These are vendor-documented capabilities, not independent guarantees. |
Confirm merchant access and commercial terms first
Before building around a provider, ask for written confirmation that your business category can accept payments in Cameroon and that you can obtain production credentials. Orange specifically says merchants must register with Orange Money, meet local compliance requirements, and subscribe before integrating. MTN’s public supported-country listing does not establish an individual merchant’s approval or onboarding timeline.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Ask which company is the merchant of record and which entity settles the funds.
- Get the complete fee schedule and settlement timing in writing, including any minimums or transfer limits.
- Confirm how refunds, reversals, failed payments, disputes, and reconciliation work.
- Establish whether your business model and subscription billing pattern are permitted.
- Ask what customer support and technical escalation are available in Cameroon, and what happens during an outage.
- For a unified provider, verify that the advertised route is live for your merchant account—not merely listed in general documentation.
Do not infer the cost of a SaaS payment from general mobile-money rules. A GSMA 2026 report summarizes Cameroon Finance Laws as including a 0.2% levy on covered mobile-money transfers and withdrawals, with an additional flat XAF 4 from 2025; it also notes a 1% rate for gambling and entertainment transactions under the 2025 law. Whether a particular SaaS payment is covered depends on the legal and transaction details. Confirm treatment with the relevant provider and a qualified local adviser. Design checkout around the customer’s actual payment flow
Orange Money requires an OTP step
Orange’s documented Web Payment customer path requires an active Orange Money account. The customer selects Orange Money, requests a one-time password through Orange Money USSD, then enters it on the payment screen. Make this step explicit in checkout instructions and support content so customers know they may need access to their account and phone during payment. Orange says merchants can test the APIs before commercial launch; its description of integration as requiring “a few lines of code” is the provider’s characterization, not a guarantee that onboarding or production setup will be simple.
Hosted checkout and payment links trade control for simplicity
A hosted page or payment link can reduce the amount of payment UI you build, while a direct in-app flow can give you more control over the surrounding customer experience. Check whether a hosted redirect returns users to the right success or cancellation screen, and ensure your system does not treat a browser return as final proof of payment. Use a server-side status check or verified provider notification to decide whether to activate a subscription.

Implement payment state as a verified server-side process
- Confirm eligibility and settlement. Resolve merchant approval, permitted business activity, currency, fees, settlement destination, and refund or reversal processes before coding.
- Obtain credentials and understand the environment. Separate sandbox and production credentials. For MTN, follow its OAuth 2.0 bearer authentication documentation. For any provider, confirm how credentials are stored and rotated.
- Create a payment record before redirecting or requesting payment. Store your internal order or subscription identifier, expected amount and currency, provider reference, and initial pending state.
- Handle asynchronous outcomes safely. Build for success, failure, timeout, and delayed notification. Make callbacks idempotent so duplicate notifications do not create duplicate subscriptions or credits.
- Verify notification authenticity and status. Validate webhook signatures where supported, and retrieve transaction status from the provider when needed. Nkap Pay documents signature verification; follow the current provider-specific procedure rather than assuming all callbacks are trustworthy.
- Test reversals, refunds, and reconciliation. Exercise these paths in the available test environment and confirm what operational steps are required outside the API. Compare provider transaction records with your own ledger.
- Launch with monitoring. Track pending payments that remain unresolved, mismatched amounts, failed callbacks, and status-query errors. Provide a support path for customers whose funds may have been debited but whose SaaS account is not yet active.
Sandbox behavior is useful for validating your code, but it does not by itself prove that production configuration, settlement, or customer behavior will match. Confirm the live flow with the merchant account before opening checkout to all customers.

Use market context carefully
Mobile money is a meaningful local payment channel, but market figures do not tell you which provider is best for your product. GSMA’s 2026 report cites BEAC figures for 2022 and 2023 stating that Cameroon accounted for 63% of the CEMAC total number of mobile-money transactions, compared with 25% for Congo and 19% for Gabon. These are country shares of regional transaction counts, not provider market shares or SaaS checkout conversion rates. The report also says public market-share and licensing information is limited, and that some provider-share estimates rely on key-informant interviews.

Anecdotal developer discussions describe difficulty with local documentation, APIs, merchant paperwork, and third-party account access. That can be a useful reminder to budget time for onboarding, but it does not establish how common the problem is or how long a particular integration will take. Developer discussion on Reddit
