Camera Index is a free, searchable archive of film cameras created by camera repairer Pierro Pozella through PPP Cameras. It is a growing project, not yet a complete catalogue of every film camera: its initial launch section covered manufacturers beginning with A, with major brands and more historical material planned for later phases.
What Camera Index is—and what it covers now
Camera Index brings film-camera listings together in a searchable online archive. Its site describes searching by brand, film format and other criteria, making it a starting point for identifying a camera or exploring models. The archive is still being built, so a missing model or a brief listing should not be taken as proof that a camera is rare or undocumented elsewhere. Kosmo Foto’s 2026 launch report noted that some entries had sparse details.
At launch, the archive’s first section covered manufacturers beginning with A. Kosmo Foto reported more than 1,400 cameras in that initial section; that is a launch-period figure, not a current count or an independently audited total. The project says future phases will cover major makers such as Canon, Nikon, Olympus, Pentax, Minolta, Fujifilm and Leica. The Camera Index project page presents those additions as part of ongoing work, not as a completed feature set.
Why a camera repairer is building it
Pierro Pozella connects the archive to what he has seen in repair work: knowledge can disappear when no one records it, and printed references have left out cameras he has encountered. He wanted a format that could be updated as information and entries are added. As he told Kosmo Foto, “As a camera repairer first and foremost, I’m aware of what happens when knowledge isn’t recorded – and the gaps that occur.”

He also said he believed that compiling and making information accessible would help keep analogue cameras alive. That is his rationale for the project, rather than a guarantee that one database can preserve the whole history of film photography. Its stated audience includes photographers, collectors, researchers and other readers interested in camera history.
How ambitious is the project?
Kosmo Foto reported that the first stage took around three months and that the completed archive could contain tens of thousands of images. The time estimate describes that first stage; the image count is an expectation for a future archive, not the number already published. The project describes itself as a long-term effort expected to take several years, with new cameras being added regularly and popular models and major manufacturers prioritized before less familiar corners of photographic history.

That scale makes Camera Index promising as a central reference, but its current usefulness will vary by model. Coverage breadth and entry depth are different things: a camera may appear in the archive while its specifications, history or other details remain limited. Treat it as a growing resource to consult, not as an authoritative or exhaustive catalogue.
How it fits alongside other camera references
Camera Index joins older online references such as Camera-Wiki and Collectiblend, as well as printed collector guides. These resources differ in format and stated scope; the available reporting does not provide a systematic audit of their accuracy or completeness. When identifying a camera, it is sensible to compare more than one source rather than assume that any single archive has the final word.

McKeown’s Price Guide to Antique and Classic Cameras is a historically significant collector reference, but its 12th edition was published in 2004. DPReview reports that the guide’s website says a new version is planned for summer 2027; that is a future plan, not an edition currently available. DPReview’s report provides that status.

Beyond adding camera makers and models, project materials describe longer-term ambitions involving lenses, accessories and broader photographic history, along with repairers and repair information. These are plans rather than established features of the archive today. Pozella’s broader aim is to preserve information about cameras, manufacturers, stories and history in a resource that can keep expanding.
