A camera drone is generally chosen for steady, carefully framed aerial photos and video; an FPV drone is flown by watching a live view from the aircraft, often through goggles, for a more immersive flight. They are not mutually exclusive categories: FPV drones can film, and some camera drones offer immersive viewing. The useful comparison is how each aircraft flies, stabilizes footage, and supports the shot you want.
What do “camera drone” and “FPV drone” mean?
Camera drone: imagery first
“Camera drone” usually describes an aircraft chosen primarily to make composed aerial photos or video. Its flight experience commonly emphasizes stable hovering, predictable movement, and assisted operation so the pilot can concentrate on framing. On applicable DJI products, for example, Normal mode uses positioning and stabilization systems, while Cine mode limits speed and movement to help produce smoother shots. The exact assistance depends on the aircraft and mode.
FPV drone: a live view from the aircraft
FPV means first-person view. DJI’s guide puts it simply: “In the world of drones, FPV stands for First Person View.” The onboard camera sends a live view to the pilot, commonly through goggles. FPV is associated with immersive movement, racing, freestyle, and close passes, but it is not limited to racing; DJI describes FPV uses that include filming as well.
These labels describe priorities and piloting approaches, not rigid technical species. An FPV aircraft may be built to capture footage, while a conventional camera drone may provide an immersive or FPV-like view. Compare the specific aircraft’s camera, stabilization, controls, and flight modes rather than choosing by label alone.

How do they differ in practice?
| Factor | Camera-drone approach | FPV approach |
|---|---|---|
| Typical goal | Steady, composed aerial photos and video. | Immersive flight and dynamic movement; some models are also designed for filming. |
| What the pilot watches | Often a controller display or other camera view; the setup varies by model. | A real-time view from the aircraft, commonly shown in goggles. |
| Movement and framing | Often favors hovering, planned paths, and controlled camera framing. | Often favors responsive movement, racing, freestyle, or close passes. |
| Stabilization and assistance | May include positioning, stabilization, or slower modes; features vary by aircraft. | Varies substantially. Some FPV products offer beginner-oriented controls, while manual modes call for more direct piloting. |
| Setup | Depends on the drone and its controller or viewing accessories. | May require compatible goggles and controllers; confirm the exact model’s supported equipment and bundle contents. |
| Best fit | Prioritizing predictable aerial imagery and a more assisted flight experience. | Prioritizing the sensation and control of flying from the aircraft’s viewpoint. |
Which one should you choose?
Choose a camera-drone style for planned aerial shots
If your priority is a stable establishing shot, a slow reveal, or a carefully framed view, look for a drone with the camera, stabilization, and flight assistance suited to that work. Check the actual modes and camera capabilities: not every camera drone has the same positioning aids or stabilization features.
Choose FPV for immersive movement
If the shot depends on moving through a space, making a fast pass, or experiencing the route from the aircraft’s viewpoint, FPV may fit better. It can also be a filming choice; the relevant question is whether that model’s camera and stabilization produce the result you need, not whether it carries an FPV label.

Consider the learning curve and complete setup
FPV does not automatically mean difficult, and camera drones are not automatically effortless. The controls and assistance available on the particular aircraft matter. DJI says its Avata 2 supports beginner-oriented controls as well as a manual mode with a compatible FPV controller, and recommends simulator practice before flying a real FPV drone. A product example is not a guarantee that other FPV models offer the same modes.
Include viewing equipment and compatible controls in the comparison. DJI identifies Avata 2 as an FPV drone and documents compatibility with specific goggles and controllers. Check the manufacturer’s current product information for the exact combinations and what is included in a given listing; equipment compatibility and bundle contents are model- and listing-specific.

What should you know about flying with goggles?
Rules depend on where and how you fly. In the United States, goggles do not by themselves remove visual-line-of-sight obligations. Under the FAA’s Part 107 guidance, commercial pilots using FPV must have a visual observer keep the drone within unaided sight: FAA Part 107 guidance. The FAA’s recreational guidance likewise requires recreational flyers to keep the aircraft in sight: FAA recreational drone guidance. These are U.S.-specific summaries, not a substitute for checking the rules that apply to your operation. Outside the United States, consult your local aviation authority.

A practical way to decide
- Start with the shot. For stable, composed aerial imagery, begin with camera-drone-style models. For immersive movement or a route seen from the aircraft, consider FPV.
- Check the actual camera and stabilization. Do not assume all camera drones stabilize the same way or that FPV footage is inherently lower quality. Compare the relevant model’s capabilities and sample footage where available.
- Review flight modes and controls. Confirm what assistance is available and whether the mode you want requires more direct control. If you are new to FPV, follow the manufacturer’s training guidance; DJI recommends simulator practice before real FPV flying.
- Price the whole compatible setup. Check whether goggles and controllers are included or must be obtained separately, and verify compatibility for the exact aircraft and accessories.
- Check local flight rules before flying. In particular, understand how visual-line-of-sight and observer requirements apply when using goggles.
