Cambridge Audio L/R X vs Sonos Era 300: Which wireless speaker is better for you?

Choose the Cambridge Audio L/R X if you want a complete, conventional stereo system in the box. It is a matched pair of active speakers with amplification built in, HDMI eARC, an integrated moving-magnet (MM) phono stage, several digital and analogue inputs, subwoofer output and broad network-streaming support. Cambridge’s US listing showed $2,399 for the pair on October 13, 2026.

Choose the Sonos Era 300 if spatial audio, Dolby Atmos or an existing Sonos system matters more than traditional stereo inputs. The Era 300 is sold as one speaker for $499 on Sonos’s US shop; two can be used as a stereo pair, or as surrounds with a Sonos Arc or Beam (Gen 2). These are different types of purchase, so the sensible comparison is the system you intend to build, not the two sticker prices alone.

What you are actually comparing

The L/R X and Era 300 are both wireless-capable powered speakers, but they solve different problems. Cambridge Audio sells the L/R X as a left-and-right pair. Each cabinet contains its own amplification and processing, so you do not need a separate stereo amplifier. The pair is designed to create a conventional stereo soundstage between two positions in the room.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Sonos sells the Era 300 individually. One unit can provide room-filling sound and Dolby Atmos playback, while two units can be configured as a stereo pair. In a home-theater system, Sonos says two Era 300 speakers can serve as surrounds with an Arc or Beam (Gen 2). That means the Era 300’s value depends heavily on whether you are buying one speaker, two for stereo, or two to complete a Sonos surround system.

Cambridge’s US product result listed $2,399 per matched pair; the opened manufacturer page redirected to the UK site, where the displayed price was £1,799 per pair. Sonos’s US shop listed $499 for one Era 300. Both figures were observed on October 13, 2026 and can change. See the current listings for the L/R X and Era 300 before buying.

Why choose the Cambridge Audio L/R X

A true active stereo pair

Cambridge describes the L/R X as its most capable active streaming speakers. The two cabinets are sold and tuned as a left/right system, with amplification, signal processing and protection inside the speakers. The manufacturer quotes 800 W total amplification for the pair. That number describes the built-in electronics; it is not a reliable predictor that the L/R X will sound better than an Era 300 in every room or with every recording.

The technical specification lists a 35 Hz–24 kHz frequency response, ±3 dB. This is a manufacturer specification measured under its stated conditions, not an independent comparison measurement against the Era 300. The L/R X also uses a custom 28 mm tweeter, two 5-inch woofers and two 6-inch passive radiators in the system, according to Cambridge’s product material.

The broadest selection of physical inputs

L/R X is the more flexible option when your sources are not all wireless. Its listed connections include:

  • An MM phono input for a turntable with a moving-magnet cartridge.
  • RCA auxiliary input for analogue line-level equipment.
  • HDMI eARC for a compatible television.
  • Optical TOSLINK for a digital source or television without eARC.
  • USB-C audio input.
  • USB-A media playback.
  • A subwoofer output.
  • Wired Ethernet for the network.

Cambridge’s full specification also lists wired USB-C or wireless WiSA HT speaker linking for supported equipment. The exact compatibility of a third-party source still needs to be checked, but the key distinction is clear: you can build a source-rich system without adding a separate phono preamp, DAC or amplifier.

Streaming and network choices

The L/R X runs Cambridge’s StreamMagic Gen 4 platform. Cambridge lists Wi-Fi 5, Bluetooth with SBC and AAC codecs, Spotify, Tidal, Qobuz and Amazon Music, plus Google Cast, Roon Ready and AirPlay 2. It can therefore fit a home that mixes direct app playback, Google Cast, Apple devices and Roon rather than relying on one closed control app. The supported services and protocols are manufacturer-listed; verify that your preferred service and subscription tier are supported in your country.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A direct television path

HDMI eARC is a major practical advantage if the speakers will replace a soundbar or connect directly to a television. Connect the TV’s eARC port to the L/R X, select the appropriate television audio output, and the pair can serve as the main left and right channels. Optical provides an alternative for a TV without eARC. The product material does not describe the L/R X as a Dolby Atmos surround system, so buy it for high-quality stereo TV and music rather than for a height-channel theater layout.

Room optimization and placement

Cambridge lists room optimization and DynamEQ, intended to adapt playback to the room and listening level. Room correction cannot remove the need for sensible placement: keep the two speakers at similar distances from the main seat, avoid blocking the front of the cabinets, and allow space around the passive-radiator enclosure. A Tom’s Guide reviewer who tested the L/R X at home for a couple of months found the room adjustment useful but also noted that positioning and furnishings changed the result. The same review criticized the price and the speakers’ large size; it is an individual home-test account, not a controlled comparison with the Era 300. Read the review at Tom’s Guide.

Why choose the Sonos Era 300

Spatial audio from a single cabinet

Sonos positions the Era 300 around spatial audio and Dolby Atmos. Six drivers point toward the front, sides and top of the cabinet, allowing compatible Atmos music to create a more enveloping presentation than a single conventional stereo speaker. The effect depends on the recording, the listening position and the room; Atmos support alone does not establish that the Era 300 will sound better than the L/R X for two-channel music.

If your priority is trying spatial mixes without buying a full AV receiver and speaker package, one Era 300 is the less complicated starting point. Two units can be configured as a stereo pair, but that is a separate purchase from the $499 single-speaker listing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Sonos control and multiroom

The Era 300 is controlled through the Sonos app and supports Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Apple AirPlay 2. This is most attractive when other Sonos products are already in the home: rooms can be grouped, playback can be managed from the same app, and two Era 300 units can be assigned as surrounds to a Sonos Arc or Beam (Gen 2). The Era 300 does not have a listed HDMI input, so do not treat it as a direct replacement for a television speaker unless you are building the documented Sonos soundbar-based system.

Connecting a turntable or other analogue source

Sonos lists line-in for the Era 300, but an auxiliary cable and the Sonos Line-In Adapter are required for a turntable or another analogue device. A turntable with a built-in phono preamp can feed that line-level path; a turntable without one needs a separate phono stage before the adapter. This is more equipment and more cabling than the L/R X’s integrated MM input.

Trueplay and physical considerations

Trueplay is Sonos’s room-tuning feature. Use it after placing the speaker in its final position so the software can account for the room rather than a temporary location. The Era 300 product page also lists touch controls, voice features and humidity resistance. Humidity resistance is not the same as outdoor weatherproofing, so avoid assuming that the speaker can be left exposed to rain or condensation.

Sonos lists the Era 300 at 10.24 inches wide, 7.28 inches deep and 6.3 inches tall in the product-page imagery. Leave clearance around the top and sides so the upward- and side-firing drivers are not trapped against a wall or shelf. The page states that the product uses 40% recycled plastic and that software efficiencies reduce idle consumption to 1.8 W; those are Sonos’s published claims.

An existing Sonos multiroom home Sonos Era 300 It uses the same Sonos app and grouping model. Mixing ecosystems can mean maintaining separate apps and rooms.
Limited shelf depth or lighter handling Sonos Era 300 Its listed depth is 7.28 inches, while each L/R X is 260 mm deep and 10.4 kg. Measure the actual shelf and leave acoustic clearance.

How to set up the Cambridge Audio L/R X

  1. Plan the positions. Place the two cabinets on stable surfaces with the tweeters at roughly ear height from the main listening seat. Keep left and right distances as symmetrical as your room allows, and confirm that each shelf can support a 10.4 kg speaker.
  2. Choose the network connection. Connect Ethernet if you want a wired network, or use the speakers’ Wi-Fi 5 capability. Install Cambridge’s StreamMagic control software and follow its current device-discovery prompts.
  3. Connect the main source. For a TV, run an HDMI cable from the television’s eARC port to the L/R X HDMI eARC input. For a turntable, use the MM phono input if the cartridge is moving-magnet. Use RCA line-in for a line-level source, optical for a compatible digital source, USB-C for computer audio, or USB-A for supported media.
  4. Link the pair. Use the supplied speaker-linking method. Cambridge lists wired USB-C and wireless WiSA HT linking for supported equipment; follow the current manual for the exact cable and pairing sequence.
  5. Run room adjustment. Apply the available room-optimization and DynamEQ settings after the speakers are in their permanent positions. Re-run tuning if you move the pair or substantially change the room.
  6. Add streaming services. Sign in to the services you use through StreamMagic or the relevant native protocol, then test AirPlay 2, Google Cast or Roon if those are part of your setup.
  7. Add a subwoofer only if needed. The listed subwoofer output gives you an expansion path; establish the main pair first so you can judge whether additional low-frequency hardware is necessary.

How to set up the Sonos Era 300

  1. Place the speaker correctly. Set it upright on a stable surface, with room around the top and sides for the upward- and side-firing drivers. If you are building a stereo pair, place the two units on opposite sides of the listening position and keep their heights similar.
  2. Use the Sonos app. Connect the Era 300 to power, open the current Sonos app and follow its setup prompts to join Wi-Fi, name the room and install any offered software update.
  3. Run Trueplay. Tune the speaker after final placement. The app’s current instructions guide you through the measurement process; keep the room quiet while it runs.
  4. Pair the source you need. Use Wi-Fi playback through Sonos, Bluetooth for a compatible device, or AirPlay 2 from an Apple device. For a turntable or other analogue source, connect the Sonos Line-In Adapter and auxiliary cable; provide a phono preamp first if the turntable does not output line level.
  5. Play compatible spatial content. Select Dolby Atmos music when you want the Era 300’s spatial presentation. Ordinary stereo tracks will not automatically become native Atmos mixes.
  6. Create a stereo pair or surround system. In the Sonos app, configure two Era 300 speakers as a stereo pair, or add two to a compatible Arc or Beam (Gen 2) as surrounds. The latter is a system configuration, not a direct HDMI connection from a television to the Era 300.

What the published numbers do—and do not—tell you

The L/R X’s 800 W total amplification and 35 Hz–24 kHz ±3 dB response are useful specifications for understanding the design, but they are not a standardized basis for declaring a winner. Amplifier-power figures can be reported under different conditions, and frequency-response figures do not describe dispersion, distortion, room interaction or personal preference.

  • 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
  • Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
  • Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
  • HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.

Likewise, the Era 300’s six-driver layout explains how it supports spatial playback, but the number of drivers does not guarantee a better result for every recording. Dolby Atmos mixes, seating position and room reflections all influence what you hear. No matched, controlled listening measurement for both products was established here, and the available independent account covers home use of the L/R X only.

Costs, compatibility and buying checks

  • Compare complete systems. A single $499 Era 300 is not the same purchase as a $2,399 L/R X pair. Two Era 300 speakers cost more than one but are still a different design and use case.
  • Confirm the region. Cambridge’s opened page displayed £1,799 per pair after redirecting to the UK site, while the US result displayed $2,399. Use the price for your shipping and tax region.
  • Count required accessories. Era 300 line-in requires Sonos’s adapter and an auxiliary cable. A TV setup based on L/R X requires a suitable HDMI cable for eARC; a turntable must use an MM cartridge or an appropriate external phono stage.
  • Check ecosystem commitments. Choose L/R X if StreamMagic, Google Cast or Roon are central to your home. Choose Era 300 if you already use Sonos rooms or plan to add an Arc or Beam (Gen 2).
  • Measure before delivery. The L/R X pair is physically large and heavy. The Era 300 is smaller in depth but still needs clearance for its spatial drivers.

Bottom-line decision

Buy the Cambridge Audio L/R X when your priority is a serious left/right stereo system with built-in amplification, direct HDMI eARC, a built-in MM phono stage, multiple wired inputs, network flexibility and room adjustment. It is the more self-contained choice for a turntable, television and varied streaming sources.

Buy the Sonos Era 300 when your priority is Dolby Atmos and spatial audio from a compact smart speaker, or when you are extending an existing Sonos system. Its best home-theater use is as part of a Sonos setup with Arc or Beam (Gen 2), not as a standalone HDMI TV speaker.
