For noise cancelling, choose the Sony WF-1000XM5; for longer stated battery life or aptX Lossless/Adaptive support, consider the Cambridge Audio Melomania M100. That comparison needs a model clarification: Cambridge sells different earbud generations, and the direct head-to-head test behind this recommendation compares the M100 with Sony’s WF-1000XM5—not the newer Cambridge A100 family.
Which Cambridge Audio model is being compared?
“Cambridge Audio earbuds” can mean more than one model. Tom’s Guide directly compared the Cambridge Audio Melomania M100 with the Sony WF-1000XM5 in 2024. The M100 is an older model; Cambridge’s U.S. product page now labels it “Archived,” though that does not establish whether retailers still have stock.

Cambridge’s newer Melomania A100 and A100 SE are relevant alternatives, but the sources cited here do not provide a direct test of either against the WF-1000XM5. The recommendations below therefore apply specifically to the M100-versus-XM5 comparison.
How the M100 and WF-1000XM5 compare

Choose Sony for the stronger tested noise cancelling
In Tom’s Guide’s direct comparison, the WF-1000XM5 cancelled noise more effectively than the M100. That is a reviewer’s finding from that comparison, not a standardized laboratory measurement, but it is the clearest evidence-based reason to choose between these two models. If reducing outside sound is your priority, the Sony is the safer pick.
Choose the M100 for longer stated battery life or aptX
Cambridge’s listed maximums give the M100 an advantage in playback per charge, both with ANC on and off. Its product page also lists aptX Lossless and aptX Adaptive. Those codec names alone do not guarantee a benefit: your phone or other playback source must support the codec you want to use. Sony lists LDAC and LC3 alongside SBC and AAC; Cambridge lists AAC and SBC as well as aptX options.

Tom’s Guide gave both earbuds 88/100 and described their sound as a tie, with the preferred sonic signature depending on the listener. That score does not establish that every listener will hear them identically. If noise cancelling and battery figures do not settle the choice, personal tuning preference, fit and the codecs your source supports are reasonable deciding factors.
