Cambridge A100 SE review: Spacious sound at a competitive price, with one rhythmic flaw

The Cambridge Audio Melomania A100 SE makes its strongest case with an open, detailed sound and a substantial feature set for its price. But in TechRadar’s review, rhythm handling is less natural than the earbuds’ spacious presentation suggests, and the touch controls can be hit-and-miss. That makes them a more persuasive pick for listeners who value air and detail than for anyone seeking especially fluid, rhythm-focused playback.

How do the Cambridge A100 SE sound?

TechRadar’s reviewer describes a wide, airy soundstage, even-handed tonality, strong detail retrieval and controlled dynamics. That open presentation is the A100 SE’s defining strength: music and spoken-word content can feel spacious rather than boxed in.

The qualification is timing. TechRadar found the rhythmic expression comparatively stiff and slightly lumpy, so tracks that depend on a nimble, natural groove may not flow as convincingly as they do through more rhythmically assured earbuds. These are the reviewer’s listening impressions, not results from our own testing.

TechRadar says it evaluated the earbuds over two weeks with a MacBook Pro, iPhone 15 Pro and FiiO M15S, listening indoors, outdoors and on public transport to music and spoken-word material. Its findings reflect that review setup and should not be read as a guarantee that every listener will hear the same result.

What features do you get?

The A100 SE combines adaptive active noise cancellation (ANC) and a transparency mode with Bluetooth 5.4, six microphones, multipoint connection, Dolby Audio and support for aptX Lossless and LDAC. Cambridge Audio also lists an IPX5 water-resistance rating, USB-C charging and wireless charging. App-based EQ and control customization give listeners ways to adjust the sound and configure the experience.

Codec support alone does not guarantee lossless or high-resolution playback. The source device, operating system, app and streaming service must support a compatible codec and settings; check those requirements before buying on that basis.

TechRadar’s reviewer found the touch controls hit-and-miss. If you regularly pause, skip or adjust playback from an earbud, that reported inconsistency is worth weighing against the app’s customization options.

How long does the battery last?

Cambridge Audio claims up to 39 hours of total battery life with ANC off and up to 21 hours with ANC on, including the charging case, according to its UK product page. What Hi-Fi separately reports up to 39 hours with ANC off and 6.5 hours from the earbuds themselves. These are published figures, not independently verified endurance-test results in the available evidence; actual runtime can vary with volume, settings and use.

How much do the A100 SE cost?

The company’s October 2026 launch announcement gives launch prices of £129 in the UK, €149 in Europe, $149 in the US and HK$1,280 in Hong Kong. What Hi-Fi also reported £129, €149 and $149 on 1 October 2026. Prices and availability may differ by market or change over time.

What Hi-Fi describes the SE as a special-edition take on the standard A100, noting a new blue color; the launch announcement highlights Dolby Audio. What Hi-Fi gives the standard A100’s launch prices as £119 and €139, which is useful context but not a guarantee of its current price or availability.

How do they compare with the JBL Live Beam 4?

TechRadar names the JBL Live Beam 4 as a close price-comparable alternative. In that reviewer’s comparison, the Cambridge earbuds have the edge in noise cancellation and spatial presentation, while the JBL is more convincing rhythmically. TechRadar reports up to 48 hours between charges for the JBL; that figure is the review’s reported claim and should not be treated as a like-for-like battery test against Cambridge’s manufacturer figures.

Choose between them based on the trade-off TechRadar describes: a more spacious presentation from the Cambridge, or stronger rhythmic delivery from the JBL. This is a focused comparison from one review, not a ranking of the entire current earbuds market.

Who should buy the Cambridge A100 SE?

  • Consider them if you want an open, airy sound, value detail and want features such as adaptive ANC, multipoint and wireless charging in a competitively priced package.
  • Look elsewhere if fluid rhythm and timing are top priorities, or if you rely on consistently responsive touch controls.
  • Check before buying if you are choosing them for aptX Lossless or LDAC: confirm that your playback chain supports the codec you intend to use.

At £129 on Cambridge Audio’s UK page, the A100 SE’s appeal rests on spacious sound and a broad feature set rather than flawless delivery. TechRadar’s review makes the reservation specific: the rhythm can feel stiff, and the touch controls may frustrate. For listeners who prize openness over groove, that trade-off may be worthwhile.
