Call of Duty: Vanguard usually fails to launch because the PC does not meet a required platform condition, game files are damaged, a video driver or Windows component is outdated, or another program is hooking into the game. Work through the checks in order: record the exact error, confirm the dated minimum requirements, repair the installation in Battle.net or Steam, update Windows and the GPU driver, close conflicting overlays, and then test with a clean boot. On the first successful start, stay at the Main Menu until Shader Preloading finishes.
Start with the symptom and error code
Before changing settings, write down exactly what happens. “Nothing opens,” an immediate desktop crash, a crash after the Activision logo, and a launch that reaches the menu before closing can have different causes. Also record any code shown in a dialog or crash report. Activision’s known-issues report lists launch or in-game crashes associated with 0x00001337, 0xc0000005, and 0x00001338.

Confirm that the PC meets Vanguard’s published baseline
Activision’s published minimums are launch-era requirements from 2021. They are a useful compatibility check, not a guarantee that a current Windows build, driver, or update will run correctly. Recheck current support information if your system is close to the limits or the game has been updated substantially.

If the processor lacks AVX, the system does not satisfy the published CPU requirement. A graphics-card purchase, controller, headset, or physical copy is not an evidence-based fix for a software launch crash.

Repair Vanguard files in the launcher
A partial download, interrupted patch, or corrupted file can stop the executable before a useful error appears. Use the repair function for the platform where Vanguard is installed; do not run a second installer over the existing copy.
Battle.net: Scan and Repair
- Open the Battle.net desktop app and select Call of Duty: Vanguard.
- Click the gear icon next to the Play button.
- Choose Scan and Repair, then select Begin Scan.
- Wait for the scan and any replacement download to finish. Do not launch the game while the repair is running.
- Restart Windows and try Vanguard again.
Steam: Verify integrity of game files
- Open Steam and go to Library.
- Right-click Call of Duty: Vanguard and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files and let Steam complete the check.
- Restart Windows before the next launch attempt.
Verification can restore files but cannot correct an unsupported CPU, a conflicting overlay, or an outdated driver. Continue with the remaining checks if the launcher reports no errors and Vanguard still closes.
Update Windows and the video driver, then reboot
Activision’s workaround for the documented crash codes starts with current video drivers and a system that meets the minimum requirements. Install Windows updates first, restart, and then install the latest driver offered by your GPU manufacturer for the exact graphics model. A restart matters: it completes driver replacement and clears processes that survived a launcher-only restart.

- Use Settings > Windows Update and install all available updates, including a required restart.
- In
dxdiag, note the GPU model and driver date before updating so you can confirm that the intended device changed. - After the driver installation, restart Windows even if the installer does not insist on it.
- Test Vanguard before reinstalling unrelated software; changing one variable at a time makes the result meaningful.
Remove software conflicts and overlays
Utilities that display frame rates, monitor hardware, capture the screen, alter input, or inject an in-game overlay can interfere with startup. Fully exit them from the notification area, not just their visible window. Activision specifically calls out NZXT CAM, MSI Afterburner, and Razer Cortex as programs to disable when they conflict with Vanguard. It also recommends updating Razer Synapse.
Close the common conflict categories
- GPU monitoring, overclocking, fan-control, and on-screen-display tools.
- Game overlays from launchers, chat clients, recording software, and performance monitors.
- Macro, peripheral, or RGB utilities that load a background service.
- Screen capture, remote-control, sandboxing, and security software that injects into processes.
Close one category at a time and test. If Vanguard launches after a particular utility is closed, update that utility, disable its overlay or hardware-monitoring module, and then re-enable other applications individually to identify the exact conflict.
Check antivirus access safely
Security software can quarantine or block a game file after an update. Activision advises adding the entire Vanguard folder to the antivirus exceptions list where appropriate, rather than excluding only one executable. The exact menu differs by security product, but the process is generally Protection settings > Exclusions/Exceptions > Add folder.

- Use the folder selected in your Battle.net or Steam installation, not a similarly named download cache.
- Only add an exclusion if you trust the installation and the files came from the official launcher.
- After adding the exception, run Scan and Repair or Steam verification again, then reboot.
- Do not leave real-time protection disabled as a permanent workaround.
Use a clean boot to isolate a service conflict
If repair, updates, and closed overlays do not change the symptom, a clean boot starts Windows with non-Microsoft services and startup programs disabled. This is a diagnostic test, not a permanent configuration.

- Press
Win+R, entermsconfig, and open System Configuration. - On the Services tab, select Hide all Microsoft services, then click Disable all.
- Open the Startup tab and choose Open Task Manager.
- Disable enabled third-party startup items, close Task Manager, and click OK in System Configuration.
- Restart Windows and launch Vanguard from its normal launcher.
If the game works in a clean boot, restore services and startup items in small groups, restarting after each change. The group that brings the crash back contains the conflict; re-enable items within that group one at a time. When testing is complete, return to msconfig, choose Normal startup, and restart so your usual applications and security services load again.
Check Windows security settings that Vanguard expects
Activision’s troubleshooting guidance says to re-enable ASLR if it was disabled. ASLR (Address Space Layout Randomization) is a Windows exploit-mitigation feature. If you changed it with a tuning tool or custom security policy, restore the default setting before testing.

- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Go to App & browser control > Exploit protection.
- Review the system settings and restore ASLR to its Windows default if it was explicitly disabled.
- Restart Windows and retry the game.
Do not randomly disable exploit protections to make a game start. If your organization manages these settings, ask the administrator to review the policy instead.

Shader Preloading is an important part of Vanguard’s first-boot process. Activision states that leaving the Main Menu stops preloading and can lead to performance issues. When the game finally opens:

- Remain at the Main Menu rather than entering Multiplayer, Zombies, or another mode.
- Keep the PC connected to power and avoid closing the game while the preload indicator is active.
- Wait until the process reports completion, then begin playing.
This step addresses a successful launch followed by stutter or poor performance; it does not repair a game that still exits before reaching the menu.

These codes do not identify one universal defective component. Treat them as evidence that the documented compatibility, driver, file-repair, and background-application checks should be completed rather than as a reason to buy new hardware.
When to contact support
If Vanguard still will not launch after the full sequence, contact Activision Support and include the platform, Windows edition and build, CPU and GPU models, RAM, the exact error code, when the crash occurs, and which repairs you completed. Screenshots of the dialog and the launcher’s installation path can help support reproduce the case.
Blizzard’s Vanguard support guidance limits Blizzard Customer Support to installation and patching issues and directs other launch errors to Activision. Therefore, use the launcher’s repair tools for installation problems, but send persistent crash-at-startup cases to Activision rather than opening a general Blizzard ticket.

- Record the symptom and any code.
- Check Windows 10 64-bit, DirectX 12 compatibility, AVX support, CPU, RAM, storage, and the video driver against the published baseline.
- Run Battle.net Scan and Repair or Steam Verify integrity of game files.
- Restart, update Windows and the GPU driver, and close overlays, capture tools, monitoring utilities, and other background applications.
- Add the complete Vanguard folder to antivirus exceptions only when appropriate, then test again.
- Use a clean boot to isolate a third-party service; restore normal startup afterward.
