In Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III, a strong loadout is a coordinated setup for a mode, map, and playstyle—not simply a weapon fitted with as many attachments as possible. Custom Loadouts become available at Level 4. Start with a weapon that suits your usual engagement distance, then use Gunsmith to balance its strengths against the handling costs of each attachment.
What a loadout includes
A Custom Loadout typically combines a primary weapon, secondary weapon, lethal and tactical equipment, and a field upgrade. Gear and perk-like selections also affect how the setup plays. Activision recommends making these choices work together for the mode, map, or general playstyle you have in mind. Activision’s Modern Warfare III Weapons and Loadouts guide describes the loadout system and Gunsmith.

If you are unsure where to begin, an assault rifle is a flexible starting point: ARs generally suit medium-range fights while remaining usable at shorter and longer distances. That is a beginner-friendly suggestion, not a claim that an AR is best for every mode or balance update. Premade loadouts can help you get started, and the Firing Range offers a place to learn how weapons and equipment behave.

Choose a weapon and attachments around the engagements you expect. A setup for holding sightlines has different priorities from one for moving quickly through close quarters. Gunsmith’s detail and comparison options can help show how parts affect weapon characteristics; compare the whole tradeoff rather than focusing on a single improved stat.
#1 Best Overall
- Call of Duty: Modern Wafare II PS5
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II is the sequel to 2019’s blockbuster Modern Warfare.
- Featuring the return of the iconic, team leader Captain John Price, the fearless John "Soap" MacTavish, the seasoned Sergeant Kyle "Gaz” Garrick, and the lone wolf himself, fan favorite Simon “Ghost” Riley, players will witness what makes Task Force 141 the legendary squad it is today.

| Build priority | Potential benefit | Tradeoff to check |
|---|---|---|
| Damage and effective range | More suitability for longer engagements | Whether the setup remains practical at closer distances |
| Recoil control and accuracy | More manageable fire and steadier aiming | Whether added control comes at the cost of mobility or handling |
| Mobility and handling | More responsive movement or aiming | Whether reduced control makes shots harder to land |
| Magazine capacity | More rounds before reloading | Whether the larger magazine slows handling |
These are comparison questions, not guaranteed numerical outcomes. Check current in-game values for the weapon and attachments you are using. Activision’s launch-era overview lists damage, fire rate, range, accuracy, recoil control, mobility, handling, rounds, and reserve among the weapon statistics to consider: Upping Your Arsenal: Primary and Secondary Weapons Detail.
How to use Gunsmith without overbuilding
Gunsmith lets you configure supported weapons, but more attachments do not automatically make a better weapon. Activision says most weapons support up to five attachments, though the exact number can vary. A part’s downside can outweigh its benefit when the build accumulates too many competing penalties.
- Pick the engagement distance. Decide whether the weapon is mainly for close, medium, or longer-range fights, and whether the mode or map changes that expectation.
- Identify the problem to solve. If shots are difficult to control, prioritize recoil or accuracy; if the setup feels cumbersome, consider mobility or handling instead.
- Inspect attachment effects. Use Gunsmith’s detail and comparison options to see how a part changes the weapon, rather than relying on its name or one highlighted benefit.
- Keep only useful parts. Remove attachments whose penalties undermine the role you chose. An open slot can be preferable to a part that makes the weapon worse for your needs.
- Try the resulting setup. Use the Firing Range to get familiar with the weapon and equipment before deciding whether the balance works for you.
Activision’s documented MCW example
Activision’s official guide gives this MCW configuration as an example intended to improve Tac-Stance accuracy without compromising ADS speed. It is a documented example, not a current verified best build or a promise of a particular result on every patch.

- ADAPT OR DIE IN A FIGHT AGAINST THE ULTIMATE THREAT
- Combat means making choices — different loadouts, different paths through the mission. Combat missions that provide more player choice. There is no one-size-fits-all solution – it is your choice whether to take the stealthy approach or go loud taking on any and all foes.

| Slot | Listed part |

| Optic | SZ Mini or Forge Tac Delta 4 |
| Stock | RB Regal Heavy Stock |
| Rear Grip | RB Rapidstrike Grip |
| Underbarrel | XTEN TX-12 Handstop |

Use the list as a starting point if the stated Tac-Stance aim matches your playstyle. Check the parts and their effects in your current game, then adjust for the engagements you actually take. The official guide does not present this as a date-stamped live-meta ranking.

Weapon platforms, also called weapon families, group weapons that share pools of attachments. Some attachments can be unlocked once and then used on eligible weapons, reducing repeated progression. Sharing is conditional: the attachment must be compatible with the weapon, and some categories are limited to a weapon class or platform.
Activision identifies muzzles, underbarrels, ammunition, lasers, and optics as universal attachment categories, while other categories may be class- or platform-specific. Check the weapon’s Gunsmith and progression screens to confirm compatibility and what remains locked. Unlock routes and exceptions can change, so do not assume an attachment available on one weapon will fit another.

What Aftermarket Parts do
Aftermarket Parts, including Conversion Kits, can substantially change a weapon’s function and character. They can help adapt a familiar weapon to a different map or challenge, rather than requiring you to rebuild your whole loadout around another weapon. The available parts and their unlock routes are subject to change; check in-game details for the current requirements. Activision introduced the feature in its Gunsmith Innovations: Introducing Aftermarket Parts and More.
Why old “best weapon” lists need a date
Weapon balance, unlock conditions, and recommended builds are time-sensitive. Activision’s official guide provides system guidance and a sample MCW build, but it is not a live competitive ranking. The launch-era article reported 37 new weapons and 6 Aftermarket Parts in the pre-season arsenal, alongside 77 weapons carried forward from Modern Warfare II and six seasons of weapon content, for a stated total of 114 weapons. Those are launch-era figures published in 2023, not a current inventory count. The launch overview supplies that historical context.
For a current recommendation, look for a dated source tied to the mode you play and verify the build against the current in-game attachment effects. A Multiplayer setup should not be assumed to transfer directly to Zombies or another mode; the cited MCW example is not established as suitable for every mode.
