Gunfight in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III is a round-based mode for two teams of two. There are no respawns and no health regeneration, every player receives the same randomized loadout at the start of a round, and a round runs 40 seconds of regulation time before a 10-second overtime flag can decide it. The official guide states that public matches are first to six round wins.
How a Gunfight round is structured
Each round follows the same sequence, and the timing matters more than most players expect. The steps below reflect the official guide.

- Round start. Both two-player teams spawn with the same randomized loadout. Nobody gets a second life, so a player who is eliminated stays out for the rest of the round.
- Equipment arrival. Loadouts include lethal and tactical equipment, and some of it does not become available until a few seconds into the round. Plan your first movement around the weapons and gear you can actually use at the start.
- Regulation time. The round lasts 40 seconds. If one team eliminates the other within that window, the round ends immediately.
- Overtime flag. If both teams are still alive when regulation ends, an overtime flag appears for 10 seconds.
What happens in overtime
The overtime flag is the only way to decide a round where both teams survive regulation, and it resolves in one of three ways:
- Flag capture: the first team to capture the flag wins the round.
- Elimination: eliminating the opposing team wins the round at any point during overtime.
- Health tiebreak: if neither outcome happens within the 10 seconds, the team with more health wins.
A flag with members of both teams on it is contested. Neither team gains control until one side clears the other off it, so a flag fight with both teams standing on it can run past the flag’s visible window only in the sense that control, not presence, is what counts.

How loadouts rotate
The randomized loadout changes every two rounds, so a single loadout is never used for an entire match. Because each change arrives on a fixed schedule, the round in which you receive a new loadout is predictable, but its contents are not. Build your first movement plan around the loadout you hold at the start of each two-round block, and adjust when the next set arrives.
Maps named at the mode’s debut
The official guide names five close-quarters maps for the playlist’s debut:
Rank #2
- ADAPT OR DIE IN A FIGHT AGAINST THE ULTIMATE THREAT
- Combat means making choices — different loadouts, different paths through the mission. Combat missions that provide more player choice. There is no one-size-fits-all solution – it is your choice whether to take the stealthy approach or go loud taking on any and all foes.
- One of the greatest collections of Multiplayer maps ever. Launching with new Ground War maps boasting innovative play spaces and the epic return and evolution of the popular War Mode
- Training Facility
- Alley
- Blacksite
- Exhibit
- Shipment
These are documented debut details. The guide does not establish that they form the current map pool, so treat this list as the launch configuration rather than today’s rotation.
Playing Gunfight as a duo
Because you cannot respawn or regenerate health, individual decisions carry more weight than in a standard respawning mode. The official guide’s advice falls into three areas.

Communication and planning
Keep calls short and clear. Rounds move quickly, so agree on a plan before each one and adjust as the round develops rather than committing to a single approach.
Using the full loadout
Use everything you are given, and adapt when a weapon’s firing type is unfamiliar. The guide gives two examples: switching to a handgun for a close push, and using smoke or lethal equipment to disrupt an opponent. Avoid unnecessary reloads in close quarters when a secondary weapon is available, since swapping is usually faster than reloading mid-fight.

Positioning and the final seconds
Stick together when it creates chances to trade eliminations, but vary your approach so the opposing team cannot predict the same rush every round. In the last seconds of regulation, consider where the overtime flag spawns and the route the opposing team is likely to take. If you hold more health, a useful sightline that forces them to approach can preserve the health tiebreak. If you are behind on health, the guide recommends a more aggressive approach or contesting the flag.

Current availability
The official guide index still lists Cooperative Gunfight, but that listing alone does not confirm that the mode is in a live playlist. The guide, the Season 1 Reloaded notes, and the rules described above do not establish which Gunfight playlist is live now, what its map pool is, whether matchmaking is running, or how many players are queuing. Check the in-game playlist menu before planning around a specific mode or map.
The guide page does not show a publication date in the material reviewed, so the rules above describe the mode as documented there and should not be read as a dated patch history.
