Ground War is a zone-control mode: teams capture and hold five lettered zones. Invasion is an elimination mode: kills score, and AI operators add to your team’s total alongside player operators. If you prefer rotating objectives and holding ground, choose Ground War. If you prefer a battle decided by eliminations, choose Invasion.
Activision’s official Modern Warfare III multiplayer mode guide summarizes the split this way:

Ground War and Invasion at a glance
Both modes support 1 to 32 players per team, and Activision groups them with its other 32-versus-32 battle-map modes. The difference lies in what your team has to do to score.

The “best fit” row is our reading of the documented objectives, not a measured finding about what players prefer.
Ground War: holding five zones
Two teams fight over zones A through E. Capturing a zone is a matter of positioning and numbers:
- Stand in the zone’s area until its capture meter fills.
- More teammates in the zone shorten the capture time.
- Enemies in the zone contest it, and capture progress stops while they are present.
- A team that already holds a flag can enter that flag’s capture area to reduce enemy capture progress.
Points for held zones
Controlled flags generate points periodically while your team holds them. The guide describes this accrual but does not give a per-interval value in the text reviewed here, so do not plan around a specific rate. Captured objectives also open forward spawning locations for your team, which is why a well-held zone helps the whole squad regroup.

- Combat means making choices — different loadouts, different paths through the mission. Combat missions that provide more player choice. There is no one-size-fits-all solution – it is your choice whether to take the stealthy approach or go loud taking on any and all foes.

Vehicles and armored threats
The official guide recommends using vehicles to reach distant flags, since the Ground War map is large. Against armored vehicles, it recommends launchers or sticky grenades.
Activision also offers three beginner recommendations for this mode. Do not keep pushing a heavily guarded flag when another flag is exposed. Use the map’s vehicles to move between distant objectives. Earn XP by capturing objectives and eliminating enemies near them. These are official guidance, not tested advice from our own play.

Invasion replaces zone control with a simpler scoring question: how many enemies did your team eliminate? The point values are the key detail.
Point values
Each AI operator elimination is worth one point. Each player operator elimination is worth five points. AI kills therefore contribute to your team’s total, but a player operator is worth five times as much. Teams that want to chase the usual 1,500-point target should expect player eliminations to do most of the scoring work.

Spawns and regrouping
Teams spawn in fixed safe territory throughout the match. You do not choose a new spawn after each elimination. The guide presents this as a place to regroup and approach from a different direction if a push stalls.
Using vehicles to respawn teammates
The guide says a player can briefly pilot a Heavy Chopper, or another available vehicle, so that friendly players respawn in a wave near the objective. Treat this as a tactic the guide describes, not a guarantee that every vehicle or playlist behaves the same way.
Which mode to choose
- Choose Ground War if you enjoy fights over fixed locations, timing captures with your team, and using vehicles to cross a large map between flags.
- Choose Invasion if you would rather score through eliminations and want kills, not captures, to decide the match.
Availability and what to check first
The official guide is detailed on rules, but the version we reviewed may predate later updates. It does not confirm current playlist access, regional matchmaking, or whether either mode is selectable right now. Check the in-game playlist menu before planning around a mode. Map lists also change over time, so do not assume the set of maps you remember from launch is complete.
