The “Connection Interrupted” message means Black Ops Cold War lost a usable connection to its host or to a Call of Duty service. It does not identify a single cause. An Activision outage, a platform-network problem, unstable Wi‑Fi, packet loss, competing traffic, restrictive NAT, or a game-side fault can all produce the same symptom.
Start by checking the Cold War server-status indicator and your platform’s network-status page. If both are operating normally, work through the low-risk local fixes—restart the router, stop heavy traffic, test wired Ethernet, run the console connection tests, and only then change NAT or port settings.

What “Connection Interrupted” actually tells you
Cold War displays this message when the session can no longer maintain a usable path between your device, the match host and the Call of Duty service. The notification is therefore a symptom, not a diagnosis. You can see it during matchmaking, in a public match, in Zombies, or in a private lobby.

The fault may be outside your home. A service incident affecting Activision, PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Steam or Battle.net can disconnect many players at once. Inside the home, Wi‑Fi interference, packet loss, a saturated upload connection, router NAT behavior or another device consuming bandwidth can break an otherwise fast internet line. A game or driver defect is possible too, particularly when the failure is limited to one computer.
#1 Best Overall
- Multiplayer - The next chapter of the iconic Black Ops Multiplayer experience is here, defined by signature combat, deniable operations, and a connected experience across platforms and generations.
- Campaign - Nothing is ever as it seems, as Raven Software brings a gripping single-player Campaign where players will come face-to-face with historical figures and hard truths, as they battle around the globe through iconic locales like East Berlin, Vietnam, Turkey, Soviet KGB headquarters, and more.
- Warzone - Black Ops Cold War will support and build on the hit, free-to-play experience Call of Duty: Warzone. Like every off-the-books clandestine operation, expect to uncover more secrets, and experience memorable moments as the Cold War heats up across Verdansk (and beyond) in the months and seasons ahead.
- Zombies - Black Ops Cold War Zombies is set to take veterans and newcomers alike on a bold and terrifying journey that expands on an iconic part of the Call of Duty franchise. This co-op mode includes new ways to progress, classic Perks, and an arsenal of Cold War-era Zombies weaponry that will help survivors dominate the legions of undead.
Activision’s support guidance puts the server-status check first. A green indicator does not prove your connection is healthy; it simply means the next investigation should be your platform and local network rather than an acknowledged Cold War outage.
Quick diagnosis by symptom and scope
| Pattern | More likely area | Best first evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Several friends, platforms or cross-play partners disconnect together | Activision or platform service, or a shared regional route | Cold War and platform status pages, plus the exact time of the event |
| Only your console or PC drops while other players remain | Home network, NAT, Wi‑Fi or device software | Router restart, wired test and platform connection diagnostics |
| You experience rubber-banding or high delay before being removed | Latency, packet loss or bandwidth contention | Stop other traffic and compare Wi‑Fi with Ethernet |
| You are removed immediately when joining a lobby | NAT negotiation, platform path or service-side matchmaking | Record NAT type and test a different party or mode |
| The problem is concentrated in Zombies or private matches | Could be a mode-specific or service-side defect; community reports are anecdotal | Compare solo, party and cross-play sessions and note whether other modes work |
No authoritative source publishes a prevalence rate or a success percentage for these fixes. Reports of recurring Zombies or private-match interruptions describe individual experiences, not a measured failure rate.
Fixes to try, in the safest order
1. Check Cold War and platform service status
- Open Activision’s Black Ops Cold War server-status page and look for the game’s indicator or an active alert.
- Check the network-status page for your platform: PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Steam or Battle.net.
- If a service is reporting an incident, wait for restoration before changing router settings. Save the time and wording of the alert if you later need to contact support.
A non-green indicator or an active platform alert can prevent sign-in, matchmaking or an otherwise healthy match connection. When status pages are clear, continue with the local tests below rather than assuming the servers are down.
2. Restart the router and remove competing traffic
Power-cycle the modem/router according to its normal procedure, allow it to reconnect fully, then relaunch Cold War. While testing, pause game downloads and cloud backups and stop video streaming, large file transfers and other bandwidth-heavy applications on the network. Upload congestion is especially damaging because a connection can show a high download speed while still dropping game packets.
Change one thing at a time and retry the same type of activity—for example, the same Zombies map or a private lobby—so you can tell whether the restart or traffic reduction changed the result.
3. Test with wired Ethernet
Activision states: “We strongly recommend using a wired Ethernet connection.” Its explanation is practical: Wi‑Fi reliability and available bandwidth vary with distance, interference and household traffic, while Ethernet provides a steadier path and the minimum bandwidth required for online play.

Connect the console or PC directly to the router with an Ethernet cable, then repeat the session that failed. A Cat6 cable is suitable for this test; the important comparison is the physical connection, not a particular cable brand. If Ethernet works while Wi‑Fi fails, focus on wireless placement, interference and router access-point settings rather than opening ports first.

PlayStation
Open the console’s network settings and choose Test Internet Connection. Review whether internet access, sign-in and the reported connection details complete successfully. A failure here points to the platform or home-network path before the game is involved.
Xbox
In network settings, run both Test network connection and Test multiplayer connection. The first checks general reachability; the multiplayer test is useful for identifying a service, NAT or matchmaking path that ordinary browsing may not expose.
PC
For Steam or Battle.net, first check the launcher’s service status and confirm that the client is fully updated. Cold War’s support hub links PC troubleshooting guidance. If the problem affects only one computer, record the launcher, operating-system version and whether other online games remain stable before changing router configuration.
5. Check NAT and router behavior methodically
NAT changes affect how the console or PC accepts and creates peer connections. Activision’s sequence is a set of tests, not a guaranteed cure. Make a note of every original setting so you can roll it back.
Recommended Free Tools
- First test: disable existing port forwarding rules and enable UPnP (Universal Plug and Play) on the router. Restart the router and console, then retest Cold War.
- Second test, only if needed: disable UPnP, enable the correct port-forwarding rules for your platform, assign the console a static local IP address, restart networking and retest.
- DMZ test: a DMZ (demilitarized-zone) setting is a console-only diagnostic step. Place only the console’s static address in the DMZ briefly, test, and remove the static address from the DMZ immediately afterward. Do not use a DMZ for a PC as a routine fix.
Do not enable UPnP, port forwarding and DMZ simultaneously while troubleshooting; doing so hides which change mattered and unnecessarily exposes services. If your router is managed by an internet provider and you cannot change these options, record the current NAT result and ask the provider whether another upstream NAT layer is present.

6. Use the current, platform-specific port reference
Activision maintains a Cold War port reference listing TCP and UDP requirements by platform. Use only the entries for your own PlayStation, Xbox, PC/Steam or PC/Battle.net setup and follow your router manufacturer’s instructions for entering them. Port lists can change, and copying a universal list from an old forum post can create conflicts or leave a needed port closed.
After saving a rule, reboot the router and device, run the platform multiplayer test again and record the resulting NAT type. If the test is unchanged, remove duplicate or obsolete rules before trying another approach.
When lag, packet loss or bandwidth is the real problem
Activision links latency, packet loss and inconsistent bandwidth quality with lag and being removed from matches. A speed-test headline number is not enough: a short burst of loss or an overloaded upload queue can interrupt the game even when the measured download rate looks strong.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Prefer Ethernet for a controlled comparison.
- Pause downloads, streaming, cloud synchronization and operating-system updates during play.
- If your router supports Quality of Service (QoS), prioritize the console or gaming PC and prevent one device from filling the upload queue.
- Retest at the time of day when the error normally appears; evening congestion can reveal a problem that a daytime test misses.
QoS-capable networking can help when several household devices compete for capacity, but it cannot repair an Activision outage or a failing modem. Treat it as a traffic-management option after the basic restart and Ethernet tests.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.PC-only checks: files, drivers and launcher state
A secondary review of Cold War troubleshooting lists corrupted game files and outdated graphics drivers as reported possibilities. Those are not confirmed causes for every “Connection Interrupted” case, and updating a driver will not fix a regional server incident. They are worth checking when console players on the same network are unaffected and the failure follows one PC.
- Use Steam’s or Battle.net’s built-in file-repair or file-verification function for the Cold War installation.
- Install the current graphics driver supplied for your GPU, then restart the computer.
- Launch the game with unnecessary overlays and background downloaders closed, and test a normal match before adding any optional software back.
If file verification reports repeated corruption, or the launcher cannot stay connected while a browser and other games work, preserve those messages for Activision or platform support instead of repeatedly reinstalling without evidence.

Interpreting Zombies, private matches and cross-play failures
A disconnect limited to Zombies or a private lobby does not prove that your internet is bad. Community discussions describe recurring interruptions in those situations, but they are anecdotal and do not establish how common the problem is or which fix works reliably.
Use scope to narrow the cause:
- If solo play works but a party session fails, note who is hosting, each player’s platform and NAT type, and whether the failure follows one host.
- If cross-play partners on different platforms drop together, compare the event time with both platform status pages and Activision’s indicator.
- If public matches, Zombies and private matches all fail only for you, prioritize the Ethernet, router and platform tests.
- If only one mode fails while every other online game and Cold War mode works, capture the mode, map, lobby size and exact error text for support.
A short test in another mode can be useful evidence, but it is not a permanent workaround if the service-side component is failing.
When to stop changing settings and contact support
Escalate when status pages are clear but the error persists after a router restart, traffic reduction, Ethernet comparison and platform diagnostics, or when several players disconnect simultaneously despite healthy local tests. Support can distinguish an account, platform or service problem more effectively when the report includes:
- Platform and edition, plus whether the session used cross-play.
- Game mode, map or private/public lobby type.
- Date and exact UTC/local time of each interruption.
- NAT type, Ethernet or Wi‑Fi connection, and the result of the platform network tests.
- Cold War and platform status-page results at the time.
- Whether other games and other household devices stayed online.
- Any router changes already made, including UPnP, forwarding, static IP or DMZ tests.
Restore router settings that did not help, especially temporary DMZ assignments and unnecessary forwarding rules. Keeping a concise timeline prevents support from repeating the same tests and makes a service-side pattern easier to recognize.
Bottom line
“Connection Interrupted” is a broad connection-loss warning, not proof that Cold War is down or that your internet provider is at fault. Check Activision and platform status first, then restart the router, remove competing traffic and compare Wi‑Fi with wired Ethernet. Use the PlayStation or Xbox multiplayer tests to locate the break. Only after those checks should you run the documented UPnP-to-port-forwarding sequence, using the current ports for your platform. Treat PC file or driver repairs and mode-specific reports as targeted diagnostics, and escalate with timestamps and NAT evidence when the pattern points beyond your home.
