Activision’s official mode guide, dated October 23, 2024, puts the core loop in one line: compete to capture Headquarters, then defend it, because respawns are disabled for the team that holds the HQ. Public matches are won by the first team to reach 200 points, and the team controlling the HQ earns points as it holds the zone.
How a Headquarters round plays out
Each round follows the same cycle: your team captures the active HQ, holds it while it stays live, and then prepares for the next location once the current one is shut down. The HQ ends when the enemy disables it or when its timer runs out, and the next site is chosen by a random rotation.

Capturing the HQ
Attacking is mostly a coordination problem. Walking into a defended zone alone usually gets you killed before any progress is made, and that is the failure mode the official guide warns about most directly.

- Push as a group. Enter the zone together and use flanking routes so defenders have to split their attention.
- Start capture progress, not just kills. Eliminating defenders without advancing the objective can waste time while the other team keeps scoring from the HQ it already holds.
- Expect contests. When both teams have players in the zone, capture progress pauses until one side clears it.
Defending the HQ
Defense is where the no-respawn rule matters most. A team that loses players inside the zone cannot bring them back to the fight, so the guide’s advice centers on holding ground and cleaning up enemy progress.
While the zone is contested
If you repel the first attackers, re-enter the zone to clear enemy capture progress. Progress that is not cleared can be resumed by the enemy when they return, so a repelled attack is not finished until the zone is clean.

After capture
Once your team holds the HQ, defenders can leave the zone and cover nearby angles when it is safe to do so. This lets the team watch the approaches rather than standing on the point.
Equipment examples
The guide suggests Blast Traps, Spring Mines, Thermo Grenades, and Molotovs as ways to deny space to an outnumbered defense. These are examples from the official article, not required or recommended loadouts.

Rotating to the next HQ
The next location is random, so rotation is about reading the map and splitting the team, not waiting for a fixed order.
- Learn the possible sites. Know where Headquarters can appear on each map so you can react without checking the minimap each time.
- Finish the disable with one player. The guide recommends a single teammate completes disabling the current HQ.
- Move the rest toward the next likely location. Teammates can set up a perimeter there before the new HQ is live.
Key terms
- Contested: both teams have players in the zone, and capture progress stops.
- Cleared zone: enemy capture progress has been removed. Uncleared progress can be resumed by the enemy on return.
- XvX: shorthand for the number of living players on each side. The official guide says Headquarters does not display this as a HUD element.
Team size and playlists
Activision’s launch communications list Headquarters as 6v6, while the detailed mode guide’s team-size field says 1 to 6 players. Treat 6v6 as the launch overview’s description rather than a guarantee for every playlist. The lobby or playlist information in the game shows the team size and ruleset for the mode you are queuing into.
