Call of Duty 3 has no official Windows release. On PC, the current route is the unofficial CoD3Recomp Windows port, and its stutter or crashes usually come from an outdated build, an experimental renderer option, a GPU wait during level loading, or a documented mission-start hang. Begin with the default renderer, update to the newest build you have, restart after changing experimental options, and change only one graphics setting at a time.
CoD3Recomp v0.4.0 is still under development. Its release notes explicitly warn: “Still in development: bugs can and will occur.” The steps below separate normal performance tuning from issues that require a full restart or a newer release.

What you need before troubleshooting
Call of Duty 3 never received an official PC edition. CoD3Recomp is a Windows static recompilation with a native Direct3D 11 renderer. The project archive contains the executable, FFmpeg libraries for audio and video, configuration files, and debug symbols, but it does not include the game data.

Confirm the build number
Write down the exact CoD3Recomp version before changing settings. The project changed quickly between releases, so a symptom that was known in v0.2.x may already be fixed in v0.4.0. The executable, archive name, or release information should identify the build. Do not diagnose a performance problem without recording this number.
Expect a one-time shader-cache delay
After installing a release or updating it, the first launch rebuilds the shader cache. That run can take longer than later launches. Do not mistake this one-time warm-up for permanent stuttering; start the game again after the cache has been created before comparing performance.
Use a clean renderer baseline first
Experimental changes make troubleshooting difficult because several settings can affect frame pacing at once. Return to a conservative baseline before testing a theory:
- Launch CoD3Recomp and open the graphics menu with F11.
- Turn off native command lists if it is enabled.
- Keep the default renderer and leave V-sync enabled when motion looks uneven or frame times fluctuate.
- Choose a sensible desktop resolution and reduce resolution scale only after confirming that the default renderer is stable.
- Apply the change, quit the game, and launch it again. Native command lists require a restart, and a restart also removes ambiguity from a renderer transition.
- Test one level from the front-end menus. Do not start a second mission from inside a running level while establishing the baseline.
If the problem disappears at this point, add options back one at a time. A setting that is harmless by itself may interact badly with the experimental command-list path or a particular level.

What the F11 menu controls
The F11 menu is the main place to change CoD3Recomp’s graphics and diagnostic options. Settings persist in CoD3Recomp.ini, so a value can remain active after you close and reopen the game. Record each change rather than relying on memory.
| F11 option | What it changes | How to use it while diagnosing |
|---|---|---|
| Window or borderless fullscreen | Display mode and presentation behavior | Use one mode consistently while comparing runs; switching modes can alter frame pacing. |
| Resolution | Output dimensions sent to the display | Keep it at a known value for your monitor before changing other variables. |
| Resolution scale | Internal rendering resolution | Lower it first when the GPU is overloaded; compare frame pacing with the FPS counter. |
| Texture quality | Texture memory and image detail | Reduce it if you see memory pressure or severe hitching, then retest the same scene. |
| Texture filtering and anisotropy | Sharpness of textures viewed at an angle | Lower anisotropy for a quick GPU-load test; restore it after identifying the cause. |
| MSAA or FXAA | Anti-aliasing method | Disable or reduce anti-aliasing when GPU time is high. Test one method at a time. |
| FOV | Horizontal field of view | Use a fixed value during comparisons; changing FOV changes the amount of geometry visible. |
| Aiming blur | Blur effect while aiming | Turn it off when checking whether post-processing contributes to hitching. |
| V-sync | Synchronizes presentation to the display refresh | Keep it on when frame pacing is uneven; compare off only as a controlled test. |
| FPS counter | Displays current frame rate | Use it with the same scene and camera movement; a high average FPS can still hide spikes. |
| Renderer statistics | Displays renderer workload information | Use it to compare the default and experimental paths rather than relying on perception alone. |
| Native command lists | Experimental handling of the console GPU command stream | Change only for an A/B test, then restart before judging the result. |
There is no published independent benchmark dataset for these options. The release notes describe qualitative speed improvements, not a reproducible percentage or minimum frame rate. Treat the FPS counter and renderer statistics as your own comparison tools, not as evidence of a guaranteed gain.
Fix stuttering in a controlled sequence
1. Update before changing performance settings
Release notes identify fixes that directly affect crashes and rendering behavior. Version 0.2.1 fixed MmAllocatePhysicalMemoryEx: out of physical space failures and stale texture-cache reuse. Version 0.2.3 fixed a shader-lighting error. Version 0.4.0 added the native Direct3D 11 renderer and the experimental native command-list option, along with additional known issues. If you are on an older build, install the current release you intend to use and retest before drawing conclusions from an old symptom.

2. Test the default renderer
Disable native command lists, restart the game, and load one level. Play the same short route for several minutes. Watch for the timing of each hitch: does it happen during camera movement, when new geometry appears, only during explosions, or only during the first run after an update? A repeatable trigger is more useful than a general impression that the game feels slow.

3. Reduce the settings that increase GPU work
Use F11 and change one item per run. Lower resolution scale first, then anti-aliasing, anisotropy, texture quality, and aiming blur if necessary. Keep the resolution, FOV, display mode, and V-sync unchanged while testing. The FPS counter can show whether the average improves, while renderer statistics can reveal whether the workload changed. After each change, restart only when the menu or renderer requires it, and record the result.
4. Compare frame-time consistency, not just FPS
Stutter is a timing problem. A scene that reports a high FPS number can still hitch when one frame takes much longer than the surrounding frames. Repeat the same movement through the same area with the same settings. If V-sync off produces a higher counter but more uneven motion, leave V-sync enabled for normal play. If both modes hitch at the same moment, the cause may be shader compilation, asset loading, or a renderer issue rather than the display synchronization setting.
5. A/B test native command lists
Native command lists are experimental. CoD3Recomp uses the game’s Direct3D calls and runs the console GPU command stream only for work the GPU still needs. That can improve performance in some situations, but it can also produce visual artifacts or instability. Enable the option, restart, and test the same level and route used with the default renderer. Compare:
- Frame-time consistency during ordinary movement and combat.
- Whether the level loads reliably after a full restart.
- Any new flicker, missing effects, or geometry artifacts.
- How long the shader cache takes to warm up after changing modes.
- Whether the original crash still reproduces.
If native command lists cause a crash, a new artifact, or worse frame pacing, disable them, restart, and return to the default renderer. Do not leave the option enabled merely because its FPS counter is higher.

Fixes for crashes and hangs during level loading
GPU-wait level-load hang
The v0.4.0 notes document a case where a level stops loading while the graphics driver waits for a response from the GPU. This is not fixed by waiting indefinitely at the loading screen. Close and restart the game, then try the same level again with native command lists disabled. If the hang returns, lower resolution scale and anti-aliasing before testing the experimental path again.
Record whether the hang happens on one level or every level. A single-level failure points toward a content or renderer interaction; a failure on every level after an update points toward the renderer configuration or installation. Use the front-end menus to start the level rather than a console command while diagnosing.
Starting a second level from inside a level
Version 0.2.3 reports an intermittent hang when a second level is started from inside an already running level. The release notes describe it as occurring about half the time. This is a known workflow problem, not proof that your graphics card is defective.

Console use can remove the HUD and weapon
Using spmap from the console during a level can leave the player without a weapon and HUD. That symptom is associated with the command-driven level transition, not necessarily with a renderer crash. Start missions through the menus instead. If you used spmap and the interface is missing, exit to the front end or restart the port rather than continuing to diagnose that session.
Version-specific fixes worth checking
| Release | Relevant change | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| v0.2.1 | Fixed MmAllocatePhysicalMemoryEx: out of physical space failures. |
Older builds could fail while allocating physical memory; update before investigating hardware or Windows settings. |
| v0.2.1 | Fixed stale renderer-cache textures. | Textures that remain from an earlier state can look corrupted or inconsistent; a fixed build is the first remedy. |
| v0.2.3 | Fixed a shader-lighting error. | Lighting problems seen on an older build may not reproduce after updating. |
| v0.2.3 | Documented the intermittent hang when launching a second level from inside a level. | Use the front end between missions instead of treating the hang as a general performance failure. |
| v0.4.0 | Introduced the current native Direct3D 11 renderer and experimental native command lists. | Provides the modern performance test path, but also requires controlled A/B testing and a restart after enabling the option. |
Known visual issues that are not ordinary stutter
Some artifacts are documented limitations of the current port. Distinguish them from frame-time spikes so you do not spend hours changing performance settings for a known rendering defect.
- Thin stretched lines can appear near barbed wire and grass in the Saint-Lô grenade-training area.
- White glints can flicker on some metal and road surfaces when strong firelight is present.
- The first launch after a release update can take longer while the shader cache is rebuilt.
- Using
spmapduring a level can remove the weapon and HUD until you return to the menus or restart.
Native command lists may introduce additional visual artifacts because the feature is experimental. Compare the same scene with the option off before deciding whether a new line, glint, or missing effect is a documented limitation or an experimental-renderer regression.

The game stutters everywhere
- Confirm the build and update it.
- Disable native command lists and restart.
- Keep V-sync on and lower resolution scale.
- Reduce MSAA or FXAA, anisotropy, texture quality, and aiming blur one at a time.
- Compare the same route with the FPS counter and renderer statistics.
Only one level hangs while loading
- Restart the game completely.
- Launch the mission from the front end.
- Test with the default renderer.
- If it still hangs, lower GPU-heavy settings and retry.
- Note the level name and whether the failure occurs after an update or renderer change.
The game hangs when moving from one mission to another
- Do not start the second mission from inside the current level.
- Return to the front end and launch the mission there.
- If the session is already stuck, restart CoD3Recomp.
The game crashes only with native command lists
- Disable native command lists.
- Restart the game; the setting is not a live toggle.
- Confirm that the default renderer completes the same level.
- Leave the experimental option off unless a later build specifically addresses the failure.
How to make useful comparisons
Use a repeatable test rather than changing several options and guessing. Start from the front end, load the same mission, perform the same movement for the same amount of time, and record the build, renderer mode, resolution scale, anti-aliasing, anisotropy, FOV, blur, V-sync state, and whether the shader cache was recently rebuilt. Then repeat the run after changing exactly one option.
| Comparison question | What to record | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Is the default renderer stable? | Whether the level loads and whether a crash occurs after a full restart | If yes, the experimental path is the leading suspect. |
| Did a setting reduce GPU pressure? | FPS-counter behavior and renderer statistics in the same scene | A useful change improves consistency, not merely the peak counter. |
| Is a delay only shader warm-up? | First launch after updating versus subsequent launches | A one-time delay is expected after the cache rebuild. |
| Is a visual defect tied to native command lists? | Same camera view with the option on and off | An artifact present only in experimental mode is a reason to revert. |
What not to do
- Do not assume Call of Duty 3 has an official PC installer; it does not.
- Do not expect the CoD3Recomp archive to contain the Xbox 360 game data.
- Do not enable native command lists and judge them without restarting.
- Do not use an isolated FPS reading as a benchmark; no independent performance dataset is published for these releases.
- Do not repeatedly launch missions through
spmapwhile diagnosing a missing HUD, weapon, or hang. - Do not keep changing several F11 settings between tests, because you will not know which change affected the result.
When the safest answer is to stay on the default renderer
The default renderer is the appropriate choice when it loads missions reliably, avoids crashes, and provides acceptable frame pacing after sensible F11 tuning. Native command lists are an experiment, not a required compatibility mode. They can be useful for an A/B test on a particular system, but there is no published guarantee that they improve every level or hardware configuration.
If you still have a reproducible failure after updating, using the default renderer, starting missions from the front end, and testing with conservative graphics settings, preserve the exact build number and the steps that trigger it. That information is more actionable than reporting only that the game “stutters.”
