After learning he had shared the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, Stanford scientist Karl Deisseroth spoke with journalists through the night. At 6:30 a.m., he asked for a break to make school lunches for his children before they left for school, the Associated Press reported.

Who is the scientist who made school lunches after winning the Nobel Prize?

He is Karl Deisseroth, a Stanford University professor and Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator, according to the Associated Press. His wife, Michelle Monje-Deisseroth, is also a Stanford professor, a pediatric neuro-oncologist and an HHMI investigator.

Deisseroth learned the news at the family home in Stanford. Before lying down, he had been reviewing papers and emailing students. After the call from Stockholm, he spoke with journalists remotely; the lunch-making break came after that overnight stretch of calls and interviews.

What did Karl Deisseroth win the Nobel Prize for?

The Associated Press reported that Deisseroth shared the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel. AP connected the award to optogenetics: a method that combines light and genes to control neuronal activity in living brains, as well as research into light-gated ion channels.

In simplified terms, optogenetics gives researchers a way to use light to influence the activity of selected neurons. That description concerns research into how the brain works; the AP report does not establish optogenetics as a treatment for autism or depression.

Deisseroth told AP that he felt as though he had “lost the power of forming words” when he first heard the news, but recovered after a minute or two. About an hour after the announcement, he said, “No real sleep was achieved.”

Why did he pause the interviews to make lunches?

At 6:30 a.m., Deisseroth asked for time to prepare his children’s school lunches before they left for school, AP reported. It was a brief parenting obligation in the middle of an extraordinary night—not a separate public event or ceremony. The report does not say what food he made.

AP also quoted Deisseroth describing both sides of his work: “For me, I’m a physician-scientist. I am a psychiatrist. I care about patients and my patients who have autism, who have depression.” He added that he cares about the hope research can bring, while also wanting to understand the brain and how it “integrates and computes and delivers all the things that make us human.”

What is confirmed about the announcement?

The Associated Press report, dated October 5, 2026, names Deisseroth, Hegemann and Nagel as the prize recipients.
