The report’s list and exact warning boundaries could not be confirmed against a matching county notice, so check official local advisories before entering the water. A warning is not automatically a beach closure.
Which beaches did the October 3 report name?
The report, attributed to the New York Post in an indexed republication, named these locations: the October 3 report.
- Santa Monica Beach
- Paradise Cove
- Redondo Beach
- Venice Beach
- Topanga County Beach
- Manhattan Beach
This is the report’s list, not a verified real-time county advisory. The available information does not establish the precise affected stretches or whether every warning remained in effect at publication. The report also links the warnings to a heat wave and describes National Weather Service heat advisories, but those weather details were not independently matched to an official October 3 forecast. Treat both the heat-wave account and beach list as reported claims, not a live status update.
What a bacteria warning means—and what it does not
The California State Water Resources Control Board explains that local agencies post warnings when bacteria measurements may make water contact unsafe. As the Board puts it, “A posting doesn’t mean the beach is necessarily closed.” A posting advises against entering the affected water; a closure is a separate restriction, including an emergency closure when a sewage spill reaches or may reach the ocean. Follow the posted restriction and stay out of a closed area until the responsible agency lifts it after follow-up testing. California beach postings and closures

Routine monitoring uses indicator measurements such as total coliform, fecal coliform and enterococcus. Their detection is used to assess water quality; it does not mean every sample contains a specific disease-causing organism. The state says contact with contaminated water may cause illness, including fever, vomiting, and throat or eye infections, among other possible effects. Illness is possible, not inevitable, and the available reporting does not establish that anyone became ill in this incident. California beach water quality and health risks State monitoring program
How to check before swimming, surfing or wading
- Check the current local notice. Consult Los Angeles County Public Health’s beach-water advisories and the state’s beach advisory information before heading into the water. The State Water Board says statewide posting and closure data are updated weekly, while local notices are the place to check current status.
- Match the warning to the exact area. Read the notice for its boundaries and status; a named beach may cover more shoreline than the affected stretch. Do not assume the warning applies to all water at a beach—or that an unlisted stretch is safe—without current local guidance.
- Obey the sign at the beach. Avoid water in a posted area. If a closure is in effect, stay out until the responsible agency lifts it.
- Account for rain and runoff. Many local agencies advise avoiding ocean water while it is raining and for up to three days afterward because runoff can carry contamination. This is general precautionary guidance, not a universal fixed rule; follow the current local notice, particularly near storm drains, creeks and rivers.
Why advisories can change
Contamination can come from sewage spills, storm-drain discharges or urban runoff, and may not be visible or detectable by smell. Local agencies monitor public beaches and issue postings or closures; the State Water Board sets monitoring protocols, oversees data quality and distributes program funds. The Board’s page, updated September 29, 2026, reports more than 600 beach monitoring sites, approximately 80,000 samples collected each year and about 150 million beach visits annually. These statewide figures describe the monitoring program; they do not verify the status of any beach named in the October 3 report. Follow-up sampling can change an advisory, so a previous warning—or its removal—is not a substitute for checking the latest local status.
