Caleb Komolafe rushed for 188 yards and a touchdown as Northwestern beat Penn State 34-13 on Friday, October 2, 2026, in the first game at the new Ryan Field in Evanston. Joseph Himon II added 162 rushing yards and two touchdowns, powering a 413-yard team rushing effort.
Northwestern controlled the game with its ground attack
The Wildcats never trailed and took a 24-7 lead into halftime. They finished with 506 total yards, while Penn State had 291. Northwestern held the Nittany Lions to 48 rushing yards, a season low according to Northwestern’s October 2 recap.
Northwestern reported that its 413 rushing yards were the program’s most in a game since it ran for 444 against Illinois on November 22, 2003. The school also said the total was the most by a Big Ten team against FBS competition that season through this game.
Komolafe and Himon supplied the headline performances

Komolafe totaled 202 yards from scrimmage when his receiving yards are included. Together, the two backs rushed for 350 yards. Northwestern said they were the first Big Ten teammate pair to each top 100 rushing yards in the same game.

How the score unfolded
- Northwestern opened with a 50-yard Jackson Kleather field goal, then Aidan Chiles ran for a touchdown to make it 10-0.
- Penn State’s Carson Hansen scored on an eight-yard run, trimming the margin to 10-7.
- Himon scored twice before halftime, giving Northwestern a 24-7 advantage. The Wildcats outgained Penn State 278-139 in the first half and held a 237-26 edge in rushing yards, according to Northwestern.
- Komolafe’s third-quarter rushing touchdown pushed the lead to 31-7.
- Penn State’s Chase Sowell caught a late touchdown, and Kleather added a field goal for the final 34-13 score.
Ryan Field opened with a decisive Northwestern win
The matchup was the first game at the new Ryan Field, a milestone also noted by the Associated Press in its report republished by ABC News. Northwestern head coach David Braun said after the game, “This is something that dreams are made of — a night like tonight.” He also said, “We have the opportunity to dream bigger than we ever have before. Why wouldn’t you when you get to call this place your home?”
Immediately after the game, Northwestern was 3-1 overall and 1-1 in Big Ten play; Penn State was 2-2 overall and 0-2 in the conference, according to Northwestern’s October 2 recap.
