Revenue was $539.607 million, about $48.2 million below Investing.com’s $587.8 million estimate. Those are comparisons with one provider’s estimates—not company-issued forecasts—and another data service displayed different consensus figures.
What Cal-Maine reported for Q1 fiscal 2027
The quarter covered the 13 weeks ended August 29, 2026. Cal-Maine Foods (Nasdaq: CALM) released its results on September 30, 2026. The company reported the following results, compared with the year-earlier quarter:
| Measure | Q1 fiscal 2027 | Q1 fiscal 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Net sales | $539.607 million | $922.602 million |
| Gross profit | $403,000 | $311.314 million |
| Operating income (loss) | -$82.165 million | not stated in the cited company release figures |
| Net income (loss) attributable to Cal-Maine Foods | -$58.615 million | not stated in the cited company release figures |
| Diluted earnings (loss) per share | -$1.26 | $4.12 |
Company-reported net sales fell 41.5% year over year. The tiny gross profit and shift from $4.12 in diluted earnings per share to a $1.26 loss show the scale of the change in the quarter; the analyst-estimate miss is a separate comparison.
What “missed by $0.79” means
Investing.com reported an estimate of -$0.47 per share and actual diluted EPS of -$1.26. The difference is $0.79 per share: the reported loss was larger than that provider’s estimate. Investing.com also compared reported revenue of $539.61 million with its $587.8 million consensus, a shortfall of approximately $48.2 million.

Estimates varied by provider. MarketBeat’s earnings page displayed an EPS estimate of -$0.77 and a revenue estimate of $561.57 million for the same quarter. Against those figures, actual EPS was $0.49 below estimate and revenue was about $22.0 million below estimate. The company’s release reported actual results but did not state analyst consensus. Consequently, “missed by $0.79” accurately describes the comparison with Investing.com’s estimate, not a single universal market consensus.
Why sales and profit fell
Conventional shell eggs faced lower prices
Cal-Maine said the conventional shell egg market was abundantly supplied after industry layer-flock repopulation during fiscal 2026. The increased supply coincided with seasonally softer first-quarter pricing. Conventional shell egg sales declined 59.5%; the average selling price per dozen fell 59.3%, while sales volume was relatively flat. The company therefore identified price pressure—not a comparable drop in conventional volume—as the central factor in the conventional business’s weaker sales.

CEO Sherman Miller said conventional shell egg pricing remained under pressure from an industry supply imbalance, while underlying demand remained healthy. That is management’s characterization of demand and market conditions; the reported price and sales changes show how sharply lower pricing affected the quarter.
Other categories cushioned the mix, but did not prevent a loss
Specialty shell egg sales fell 14.0% year over year, and prepared foods sales fell 13.0%. Cal-Maine attributed the prepared-foods decline partly to temporary production reductions related to capacity expansion and network optimization. Prepared foods made up 11.7% of net sales, compared with 7.8% a year earlier. Specialty shell eggs and prepared foods together accounted for 54.1% of sales, up from 37.1%.

The larger share of specialty eggs and prepared foods indicates a broader sales mix, but it coexisted with the quarter’s operating loss. It did not offset the steep conventional egg price decline sufficiently to keep Cal-Maine profitable.

Cal-Maine said it expected prepared-food production capacity to increase by more than 60% by the first half of fiscal 2028 compared with fiscal 2026 year-end. This is management’s forward-looking plan, not a guaranteed result. Investors following the company can watch for updates on execution, production levels, and whether the expanded specialty and prepared-foods businesses contribute to profitable growth as conventional egg pricing changes.
