The available listing identifies that theme and names related topics, but does not provide a viewable transcript of Long’s arguments. It therefore supports an account of the debate—not a detailed reconstruction of what she said.
The broader macro question is conditional. Stablecoins backed by Treasury bills could add demand for government debt, but the effect depends on where their funding comes from, what reserves issuers hold, and whether stablecoins draw money away from bank deposits or other Treasury buyers. Bitcoin’s “digital gold” case is a separate thesis: the listing identifies the topic, but does not expose Long’s detailed reasoning or evidence.

What the October 2026 listing says—and what it does not
Bitcoin Magazine’s October 5, 2026, exact-title listing describes Caitlin Long as founder and CEO of Custodia Bank. Its chapter headings point to U.S. policy, the GENIUS Act, Tether, community banks and megabanks, SVB, AI agents, the Eurodollar market, tokenized deposits and equities, Treasury-market stress, and Bitcoin as digital gold. The page’s accessible description presents banking-system tokenization as a potentially larger story and asks whether tokenized bank deposits will crowd out stablecoins.

How stablecoins could affect Treasury demand
Stablecoins are dollar-referenced payment instruments. If issuers back them with Treasury bills and other liquid dollar assets, growth in stablecoin use can create additional demand for those assets. Federal Reserve Governor Stephen I. Miran described this as a possible channel through which stablecoins could increase demand for U.S. government debt. The result is not automatic: it depends on the reserve mix and on where buyers get the money used to acquire stablecoins.

Miran cited a Federal Reserve staff compilation whose interquartile range of private-sector estimates projected stablecoin adoption of $1 trillion to $3 trillion by the end of the decade. These are estimates compiled by Federal Reserve staff and cited in Miran’s November 7, 2025, speech, not an official Federal Reserve forecast.
Why the source of funds matters
If a customer moves money from an existing bank deposit into a stablecoin, the issuer may invest the proceeds in Treasury bills, but that transfer does not necessarily create an equivalent amount of new net loanable funds. The bank may lose deposit funding, which can affect credit provision and how monetary policy reaches the economy. By contrast, funds entering from outside the banking system could have different effects. Miran identified the scale of adoption, funding sources, substitution away from banks, and stablecoin run risk as open questions.

The Federal Reserve’s pandemic-era Treasury purchases illustrate why the scale of government-debt demand matters, but not what stablecoins will do: the Fed’s holdings of U.S. Treasury securities grew by just over $3 trillion during pandemic quantitative easing, according to Miran’s 2025 speech. The same speech referred to less than $7 trillion in Treasury bills outstanding at the time it was written. That is a dated comparison, not a current Treasury-bill balance or a forecast of stablecoin purchases.
Why extra demand does not guarantee lower borrowing costs
The BIS’s April 20, 2026, discussion adds counterweights. Stablecoin demand could lower government borrowing costs at the margin if it outweighs the demand displaced from other investors. But a shift from deposits into stablecoins could also reduce banks’ capacity to fund credit. If stablecoins replace cash, some seigniorage—the benefit associated with issuing money—could shift. The BIS also identifies tax-evasion channels and the risk that a run could force issuers to sell government bonds, potentially amplifying market stress.

So “stablecoins buy Treasuries” is an incomplete account. Whether the net effect helps Treasury financing or adds fragility depends on the source of funding, the assets held in reserve, redemption and liquidity arrangements, and what other investors do.
Stablecoins versus tokenized bank deposits
The listing’s question—whether tokenized bank deposits will crowd out stablecoins—does not have a proven winner in the cited material. “Tokenized” describes a way of representing or transferring a financial claim; it does not, by itself, determine who owes the money, what protects the holder, or how a claim can be redeemed. The BIS discusses permissioned tokenized deposits as one way to connect tokenization with the existing two-tier financial system.

These are the practical distinctions to examine when comparing a particular stablecoin with a particular tokenized deposit:
| Question | Stablecoin | Tokenized bank deposit |
|---|---|---|
| What is the claim, and who issues it? | A dollar-referenced payment instrument. The specific issuer and legal claim depend on the product; the BIS discussion emphasizes that design matters. | A bank deposit represented in tokenized form. The BIS discusses permissioned tokenized deposits; details depend on the arrangement. |
| What backs it? | Reserve assets and their liquidity matter. Miran’s Treasury-demand mechanism applies if issuers hold Treasury bills and other liquid dollar assets. | Not stated for a specific product in the cited Federal Reserve or BIS discussions. |
| How does redemption work? | Redemption at par, liquidity management, and protections for holders are material design questions identified by the BIS; terms vary by issuer. | Not stated for a specific product in the cited Federal Reserve or BIS discussions. |
| Where can it settle, and who can use it? | Not stated for a specific product in the cited Federal Reserve or BIS discussions. | The BIS identifies permissioning as part of the tokenized-deposit model it discusses; it does not specify a particular network or access policy. |
| What happens to bank funding? | If adoption shifts funds out of bank deposits, bank funding and credit can be affected; the net result depends on the funding source. | The cited BIS discussion presents tokenized deposits as an approach that can integrate tokenization with the existing two-tier financial system; it does not quantify the effect on funding. |
| How could it behave under stress? | A run can lead to forced bond sales. Reserve design, redemption at par, liquidity management, holder protections, and resolution arrangements matter. | Not stated for a specific product in the cited Federal Reserve or BIS discussions. |
The table describes questions to ask, not universal product terms. The cited material does not establish that every stablecoin holds the same reserves, that all tokenized deposits share one design, or that one category will displace the other.

The chapter list includes “Bitcoin as Digital Gold: Retail Ownership and Holding Long Term.” That establishes that the subject appears in the video, not what Long’s detailed argument is. The accessible listing does not show her evidence, qualifications, or view of Bitcoin’s performance under different market conditions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe general macro case for Bitcoin often rests on a scarcity and store-of-value thesis: if governments respond to debt pressure by expanding money or allowing inflation, an asset with limited supply might appeal to people seeking protection from currency debasement. That possibility is not the same as a demonstrated hedge in every period, and it does not follow from stablecoin growth. Stablecoins are dollar-referenced payment instruments; Bitcoin is a separate asset with its own volatility and risk profile.
A separate, circa-2022 Circle interview transcript offers a useful example of the debate, but it is not evidence of what Long said in the October 2026 video. In that earlier conversation, Nic Carter said Bitcoin might benefit in a future shaped by debt monetization and inflation, while also warning that Bitcoin can behave like a risk asset and sell off when liquidity tightens. The two ideas can coexist: a long-run scarcity thesis does not prevent sharp declines when investors reduce exposure to risky assets.
Quick Recap
What the evidence supports
- The October 2026 listing raises the stablecoin-versus-tokenized-deposit question and flags tokenization inside banking as a potentially larger development; it does not supply enough accessible transcript material to attribute a detailed position to Long.
- Stablecoin reserves could add Treasury demand, but the net impact depends on reserve allocation, funding sources, and demand displaced from banks or other investors.
- Deposit substitution, reduced bank credit, run risk, and forced bond sales are important counterweights to a one-sided claim that stablecoins necessarily help government financing.
- The “digital gold” chapter title shows that Bitcoin’s macro role is part of the video’s agenda, but it does not establish Long’s full case. The separate Circle interview illustrates both a possible inflation-hedge thesis and liquidity-related downside risk.
