The Union Cabinet approved a Productivity Linked Bonus (PLB) equal to 78 days of wages for eligible railway employees on 14 October 2026. The package provides a total outlay of ₹2,009.61 crore for 1,140,770 employees, with a maximum individual payment of ₹17,951.

What the 2026 railway bonus decision includes

The Cabinet’s 14 October 2026 approval keeps the PLB at 78 days of wages. The government will spend ₹2,009.61 crore, covering 1,140,770 railway employees. The maximum PLB payable to an eligible employee is ₹17,951.

Bonus duration 78 days of wages
Total outlay ₹2,009.61 crore

Approval date 14 October 2026

The figures are from the Union Cabinet announcement reported by the Press Information Bureau (PIB). The ₹17,951 figure is a maximum, not a guaranteed payment for every employee; an employee’s actual amount depends on the applicable PLB calculation and eligibility conditions.

Who is covered by the 78-day PLB

The 2026 PIB announcement describes the beneficiaries as about 11.40 lakh non-gazetted railway employees. It specifically names staff in operational, technical, supervisory and administrative roles.

Employee categories named in the announcement

  • Track maintainers
  • Loco pilots
  • Train managers, formerly commonly called guards
  • Station masters
  • Supervisors
  • Technicians and technician helpers
  • Pointsmen
  • Ministerial staff
  • Other Group C employees

The latest available Railway Board order for 2024-25 says PLB applies to eligible non-gazetted employees but excludes Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Railway Protection Special Force (RPSF) personnel. Those detailed eligibility provisions should be treated as standing rules from that order, not as new rules announced in the 2026 Cabinet release.

How the wage ceiling affects calculation

The 2024-25 Railway Board order also states that when an employee’s wages exceed ₹7,000 per month, the bonus is calculated by treating the wage as ₹7,000. The 2026 PIB release does not restate this ceiling, so employees should rely on the applicable Railway Board instructions and their department’s implementation notice for the final calculation.

When will railway employees receive the PLB?

Railway PLB is paid every year before the Durga Puja and Dussehra holidays. The official wording says: “Payment of PLB to eligible railway employees is made each year before the Durga Puja/Dusshera holidays.”

The 14 October 2026 release does not specify a particular disbursement date. Employees should therefore distinguish between the Cabinet approval date and the later payment date issued through railway administrative instructions. The payment schedule can vary by the time needed for departmental processing, even though the policy target is pre-holiday payment.

Why the government approved the bonus

The government linked the 2026 PLB decision to strong railway performance during 2025-26. According to Ministry of Railways and PIB figures, Indian Railways loaded a record 1,670 million tonnes of cargo and carried nearly 7.41 billion passengers.

  • Freight: 1,670 million tonnes loaded in 2025-26.
  • Passenger traffic: Nearly 7.41 billion passengers carried in 2025-26.

PIB describes PLB as an incentive intended to motivate railway employees to improve the performance of the Railways. The payment is therefore presented as a performance-linked annual benefit rather than a change to regular salary.

How the 2026 approval compares with 2025

The Cabinet approved the same 78-day duration and the same ₹17,951 maximum in September 2025. The main changes in 2026 are the larger approved outlay and the higher number of covered employees.

Measure 2025 approval 2026 approval Change
Bonus duration 78 days 78 days No change
Total outlay ₹1,865.68 crore ₹2,009.61 crore Increase of ₹143.93 crore
Employees covered 1,091,146 1,140,770 Increase of 49,624
Maximum individual payment ₹17,951 ₹17,951 No change

The increase in total spending largely reflects the additional employees covered in the 2026 approval. It does not represent an increase in the number of bonus days or in the stated maximum payment per employee.

What employees should check

An employee trying to estimate their payment should verify the following with their personnel or accounts office:

  • Whether they are included in the eligible non-gazetted category for the relevant financial year.
  • Whether their service and other conditions satisfy the applicable Railway Board PLB order.
  • Whether they fall under an excluded force, such as RPF or RPSF, under the latest applicable rules.
  • Which wage figure is used when calculating the 78-day amount, including the ₹7,000 ceiling stated in the 2024-25 order.
  • The department’s actual release date and payment-processing instructions.

What is confirmed—and what is not

Confirmed by the 14 October 2026 Cabinet decision are the 78-day duration, ₹2,009.61 crore outlay, 1,140,770 beneficiaries and ₹17,951 maximum. The announcement also confirms the broad non-gazetted staff categories and the government’s 2025-26 freight and passenger performance figures.

The release does not provide an exact bank-credit date or reproduce every eligibility and calculation rule. Those details remain governed by the relevant Railway Board instructions and departmental implementation orders.
