C. V. Raman was awarded the 1930 Nobel Prize in Physics for his work on light scattering and the discovery of the Raman Effect. His path to that achievement ran from an early fascination with optics and acoustics through a government job he held alongside scientific research. The title’s reference to “Nobel predictions” is not supported by a documented prediction in the available historical record; Raman’s story is instead one of discovery, recognition and a national day of science.
Who was C. V. Raman?
Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman was born in Tiruchirappalli, southern India, on 7 November 1888. His father taught mathematics and physics. Raman entered Presidency College in Madras in 1902, completed a BA in 1904 and an MA in 1907, according to his Nobel Prize biography.
His early scientific interests included optics—the study of light—and acoustics, the study of sound. In 1907 he joined India’s Finance Department. Rather than abandoning science, he pursued experimental work in the time and facilities available to him at the Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science in Calcutta, now Kolkata.
How did Raman move from government service to physics?
Raman’s research developed alongside his public-service career. In 1917 he left the Finance Department to take the Palit Professorship in Physics at the University of Calcutta. He continued his investigations at the Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science, connecting his academic position with the experimental work he had already been pursuing.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
This part of his career matters because the discovery was not an isolated flash of insight detached from sustained work. Raman had been investigating light and sound for years before he announced the light-scattering phenomenon that later carried his name.
What is the Raman Effect?
When light passes through a transparent material, molecules scatter some of it. Most of the scattered light retains the incoming light’s wavelength. A small fraction, however, emerges at a different wavelength after interacting with molecules. That wavelength shift is the Raman Effect, as explained by the Government of India’s Press Information Bureau.

The shift is the key: the effect does not mean that all scattered light changes wavelength. The altered light can provide information useful for investigating a sample. Raman spectroscopy uses this phenomenon as a tool for scientific investigations and industrial applications, a use noted in President Ram Nath Kovind’s 2020 National Science Day address.
What did C. V. Raman win the Nobel Prize for?
Raman received the 1930 Nobel Prize in Physics for his work on the scattering of light and discovery of the effect named after him. On 28 February 1928, he announced the discovery of the light-scattering phenomenon, according to the historical account in Kovind’s 2020 address. The Nobel Prize followed two years later.

The Nobel recognition made Raman the first Asian to receive a Nobel Prize in science, in the specific wording used by Kovind’s address. That qualification is important: it does not mean he was the first person from India to receive any Nobel Prize.
Was C. V. Raman the first Indian to win a Nobel Prize?
No—not if “Nobel Prize” means any category. Rabindranath Tagore received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913, before Raman’s 1930 award in Physics. A CBSE educational biography notes Tagore’s earlier recognition. Raman’s supported distinction is that he was the first Asian to receive a Nobel Prize in science, as President Kovind put it in 2020.

Why is National Science Day celebrated on 28 February?
India observes National Science Day on 28 February to commemorate Raman’s discovery of the light-scattering phenomenon. The Government of India’s Press Information Bureau says the designation was requested in 1986 and the first observance took place on 28 February 1987. The annual date therefore connects the public celebration of science to the historical date associated with Raman’s announcement.
What does Raman’s legacy mean today?
His legacy has two closely linked dimensions. Raman’s discovery underpins Raman spectroscopy, which the President’s 2020 address describes as a powerful tool for scientific investigations and industrial applications. National Science Day, established decades after the discovery, gives the date a public role in commemorating science in India.

In the same address, Kovind reported a statement attributed to Raman in 1969, speaking to young graduates: “We need a spirit of victory, a spirit that will carry us to our rightful place under the sun, a spirit which can recognize that we, as inheritors of a proud civilization, are entitled to our rightful place on this planet. If that indomitable spirit were to arise nothing can hold us from achieving our rightful destiny.” The address is the source for the quotation as reproduced here.
