Bypass CGNAT: Reach Your Home Server or Raspberry Pi from Anywhere

A router port forward cannot cross your ISP’s CGNAT by itself. Choose a private mesh for your own devices, a public tunnel for public services, or IPv6 when both ends support it.

To reach a home server behind CGNAT, use a private mesh VPN for access from your own devices, or an outbound tunnel when the service must be public. A port-forwarding rule on your router cannot, by itself, pass through the ISP’s shared IPv4 address. First check whether your connection has public IPv4 or usable IPv6; then choose an access method that matches who should be able to connect.

Why router port forwarding does not solve CGNAT

With ordinary port forwarding, your router directs incoming traffic from its internet-facing address to a device on your home network. Under carrier-grade NAT (CGNAT), your router sits behind another address-sharing layer controlled by the ISP. A port forward on your router does not configure that upstream layer, so unsolicited IPv4 traffic cannot necessarily reach your home network.

Compare the router’s WAN address with the public address shown by an external IP-check service. If they differ, that is a useful clue that another network layer is involved, but it is not a definitive diagnosis on its own. Ask your ISP whether your service uses CGNAT, whether it can provide a public IPv4 address, whether inbound traffic is filtered, and whether it provides public IPv6. Tailscale describes CGNAT and its connectivity implications in its CGNAT conflicts documentation; the available documentation does not establish a universal test that conclusively identifies CGNAT on every ISP.

Choose based on who needs access

Need Good fit Who can connect
Reach your own home server from your laptop, phone, or other enrolled devices Private overlay network such as Tailscale Devices authorized on your private network
Let people on the public internet use a specific service without installing your private-network app A public tunnel, such as Tailscale Funnel or Cloudflare Tunnel Anyone who can reach the public URL or hostname, subject to the service’s own access controls
Reach the server directly over IPv6 Public IPv6, if both ends support it and the firewall permits the traffic IPv6-capable clients; it does not provide IPv4 connectivity

Ask whether the service is private or intentionally public before setting anything up. A personal dashboard, file service, or admin panel should not become public merely because a tunnel makes that technically possible.

For your own devices: use a private overlay network

Tailscale documents connections across IPv4, IPv6, NAT, and CGNAT. It gives devices private addresses within its network, letting an authorized remote device reach a home server without relying on an inbound port forward. This is generally the simplest fit when you control both the server and the devices that need access. See Tailscale’s connection-types guide.

What happens if a direct connection fails

Tailscale attempts direct UDP connectivity where possible. Some network combinations, including restrictive or “hard” NAT conditions, prevent a direct path. In those cases, Tailscale can use Peer Relay or its DERP relay servers instead. A relay can affect performance, and the route is not guaranteed to be direct or to deliver identical speeds on every network.

Basic setup and verification

  1. Install Tailscale on the home server or Raspberry Pi and on each remote device that should have access, then sign in and authorize the devices.
  2. Use the server’s Tailscale address or device name to connect to the service’s existing port. Keep the service’s own authentication enabled; private network membership is not a reason to expose an unauthenticated admin interface.
  3. Turn off Wi-Fi on your phone and try the connection over mobile data, or test from another network outside the home. Confirm that an enrolled device can connect and that an unapproved device cannot.

For public access: use a tunnel only for a service meant to be public

A tunnel establishes an outbound connection from home, avoiding the need for an inbound router port forward or a public home IPv4 address. It does not make the application itself safe: use appropriate authentication, keep the server and application updated, and publish only the resource outside users are meant to reach.

Tailscale Funnel

Funnel gives a selected local resource a public URL through a TCP proxy and relay. Tailscale says the relay does not decrypt traffic carried over the proxy. Its documentation lists Tailscale v1.38.3 or later, MagicDNS, HTTPS certificates, and an enabled Funnel node attribute as prerequisites. The documented listening ports are 443, 8443, and 10000; Funnel works over TLS-encrypted connections and has non-configurable bandwidth limits. Tailscale labeled Funnel beta in documentation validated on January 20, 2026, so check its current Funnel documentation for current availability, setup details, and limits.

Public means public: Tailscale warns that anyone with the Funnel URL can access the exposed service. Do not use it for services containing sensitive data or intended only for private access. That warning appears in its development-server sharing guide.

Cloudflare Tunnel

Cloudflare Tunnel uses cloudflared to create an outbound-only encrypted connection from your infrastructure to Cloudflare, so the origin does not need to accept inbound connections or have a public IP. A public hostname can route to a local service. Cloudflare describes the connection as “post-quantum encrypted”; that is Cloudflare’s description of its product, not an independent security assessment. See the Cloudflare Tunnel overview.

Cloudflare lists HTTP, HTTPS, TCP, SSH, RDP, and SMB among supported routing types. TCP and SSH access require the connecting client to use cloudflared access commands. Traffic to the origin flows through Cloudflare’s network, so account configuration and the application’s own access controls matter. See Cloudflare’s routing documentation.

When public IPv6 can help

If your ISP provides usable public IPv6, you may be able to reach a home service directly from IPv6-capable clients after configuring the server and router firewall appropriately. Tailscale’s documentation notes that direct public IPv6 connectivity requires public IPv6 at both endpoints. IPv6 does not make an IPv4-only service reachable to clients that only have IPv4, so keep a dual-stack or tunnel route if those clients must connect. Address allocations and routing arrangements can change; confirm the current setup with your ISP. See Tailscale’s IPv6 guide and its connection-types guide.

Check the result from outside your home

  1. Test from mobile data or another genuinely external network; a test from home Wi-Fi may only confirm local access.
  2. For private access, verify that an authorized device can reach the server and that an unapproved device cannot.
  3. For public access, open the public URL or hostname from a device that is not signed into your private overlay. Confirm that only the intended service is available and that its login or other access controls work.
  4. If a connection fails, recheck the service address and port, tunnel or overlay status, firewall rules, and ISP connectivity. For direct IPv6, also confirm that the client has IPv6; for Tailscale, a relay path may be in use when a direct UDP connection is unavailable.
