BWX Technologies (BWXT), Cameco and GE Vernova all have nuclear exposure, but they do not have the same business model. BWXT combines government nuclear work with commercial manufacturing and services; Cameco centers on uranium and fuel services, with an investment in Westinghouse; GE Vernova spans Power, Wind and Electrification. Compare their business segments and drivers before comparing financial results—and use same-date market data before making a valuation judgment.
How does BWXT compare with other nuclear stocks?
“Nuclear stocks” is a broad label, not a like-for-like industry group. The companies below participate in different parts of the nuclear value chain, and GE Vernova’s consolidated results include major non-nuclear businesses. A useful comparison starts with what each company sells, who pays for it, and what can move its results.

| Company | What the business includes | What to examine |
|---|---|---|
| BWX Technologies (NYSE: BWXT) | Government Operations and Commercial Operations, including naval nuclear propulsion components and fuel, government nuclear services and materials, and commercial nuclear manufacturing, fuel, maintenance and engineering. Medical products were also in the reported mix before the announced sale. | Government-contract concentration, segment profitability, funded and unfunded backlog, commercial utility cycles, execution and manufacturing investment. |
| Cameco (NYSE: CCJ; TSX: CCO) | Uranium production, fuel services and an investment in Westinghouse. | Uranium production and contracting, realized prices, fuel-services economics, Westinghouse equity earnings, delivery timing and project-specific effects. |
| GE Vernova (NYSE: GEV) | Power, Wind and Electrification, with nuclear power activity within the broader portfolio. | Separate nuclear-related Power activity from company-wide orders, revenue, margins and backlog. |
These are comparison candidates, not interchangeable peers. BWXT’s FY2025 filing names Framatome, Cameco, Doosan Heavy Industries, AECON, Westinghouse and AtkinsRéalis among commercial competitors, while noting that competition can turn on price, technical capability, quality, timeliness, breadth and willingness to take project risk. Overlap in selected markets does not make the companies’ economics equivalent.

BWXT reports two segments. Government Operations covers government nuclear work, including naval nuclear propulsion components and fuel and other government nuclear services and materials. Commercial Operations covers nuclear manufacturing, services and engineering. This mix gives BWXT exposure to government programs and commercial nuclear activity rather than making it a pure-play uranium producer, utility or diversified energy-equipment company.
#1 Best Overall
FY2025 revenue and segment mix
BWX Technologies, Inc. reported $3.198 billion in consolidated FY2025 revenue. Government Operations contributed $2.350 billion and Commercial Operations $853.070 million before eliminations; the segment figures therefore do not add exactly to consolidated revenue. These are historical results, not a forecast.
Backlog is not all funded or guaranteed revenue
At December 31, 2025, BWXT reported $7.261 billion of ending backlog, including $2.151 billion of unfunded U.S. Government backlog. In its FY2025 filing, management expected to recognize approximately 40% of backlog revenue by the end of 2026. That was a forecast made at the filing date, not a guarantee, and the unfunded portion is subject to government funding.
Is BWXT a nuclear reactor company or a supplier?
Based on the businesses described in its filings, BWXT is best understood here as a nuclear components, fuel, manufacturing and services company—not as a company whose reported business is selling complete commercial reactors. Its government work includes naval nuclear propulsion, while its commercial business includes manufacturing and services for the nuclear industry. That distinction matters: the financial drivers for a supplier or service provider are not automatically the same as those for a reactor developer, utility or uranium miner.
How is BWXT different from Cameco?
Cameco’s reported business centers on uranium production and fuel services, alongside its investment in Westinghouse. BWXT’s reported mix instead combines government nuclear work with commercial manufacturing and services. A share-price or revenue comparison that ignores these differences can obscure what is driving each company.

Read Cameco’s earnings with project timing in mind
Cameco described FY2025 adjusted EBITDA of $1.9 billion, a non-GAAP measure, and attributed the increase from 2024 primarily to uranium-segment contributions and its share of Westinghouse revenue tied to the Dukovany construction project. Cameco’s Q2 2026 year-over-year results were affected by the prior-year Westinghouse/Dukovany project contribution. That project effect should not be mistaken for a recurring contribution without further evidence.
Is GE Vernova a pure-play nuclear stock?
No. GE Vernova reports a broader portfolio of Power, Wind and Electrification, with nuclear activity within Power. Its company-wide results should not be presented as nuclear-only results.
GE Vernova’s 2025 annual-report highlights included $38 billion in FY2025 revenue and $150 billion in backlog. Those are company-wide figures; the company defines backlog as remaining performance obligation. In its Q2 2026 release, reported July 22, 2026, GE Vernova reported $11.1 billion in revenue and said growth was led by Power and Electrification, while nuclear power services revenue also grew. Neither the quarterly growth figure nor the annual backlog is a measure of nuclear activity alone.

What do the 2026 updates change?
Interim results should be kept distinct from FY2025 annual figures. BWXT reported $901.6 million in Q2 2026 revenue in a release dated August 3, 2026, raised its 2026 guidance and announced a sale of its medical business. The release also said the PCG acquisition closed on July 1, 2026. These developments mean FY2025 segment mix should not be carried forward as if it were automatically the later run rate. Any guidance figures or adjusted results should be identified as company guidance or non-GAAP measures, as applicable.
BWXT CEO Rex Geveden characterized demand for new nuclear solutions as “remarkably deep and broad,” alongside the company’s government and commercial revenue streams, in that Q2 release. This is management’s view of demand and predictability, not independent validation or a promise of future performance.

BWXT: government concentration and program timing
- BWXT’s FY2025 filing says the U.S. Government accounted for about 91% of Government Operations revenue. It also warns that a relatively small number of major projects can represent a significant share of operations.
- A substantial portion of Government Operations backlog depends on U.S. Government demand and annual funding approvals; award timing can shift.
BWXT: commercial cycles and execution
- Commercial demand can depend on utility maintenance and refueling outages, capital spending, refurbishments, plant-life extensions, nuclear fuel and fuel-handling demand, particularly in Canada.
- The company describes its industries as capital-intensive and dependent on large contracts. Investors assessing this exposure should examine operating cash flow, capital spending, contract terms and delivery schedules alongside revenue and backlog.
Cross-company mix and one-time effects
- Cameco’s uranium and fuel-services economics and Westinghouse equity contribution differ from BWXT’s government manufacturing base; delivery timing and project effects can influence comparisons.
- GE Vernova’s company-wide revenue and backlog combine nuclear and non-nuclear businesses. Its consolidated growth cannot be assigned to nuclear without segment-specific evidence.
What should investors compare before buying nuclear stocks?
Use a business-first checklist rather than ranking companies by a single headline figure.
Quick Recap
- Identify the revenue engine. Separate government contracts, uranium production, fuel services, equity earnings, manufacturing and broader energy equipment.
- Compare like with like. Use segment-level results where available. Do not compare BWXT’s segment revenue directly with Cameco’s adjusted EBITDA or GE Vernova’s company-wide backlog as if they measured the same thing.
- Check backlog quality and timing. Distinguish funded from unfunded amounts, understand what a company counts as backlog, and consider when it expects to recognize revenue.
- Review concentration and volatility. Look for major customers or projects, government appropriations, commodity and contract timing, outages, and utility spending cycles.
- Adjust for changes in the business mix. Account for transaction dates, such as BWXT’s announced medical-business sale and July 2026 PCG acquisition close, rather than treating prior-year results as a current run rate.
- Use current, comparable market data for valuation. The figures discussed here do not establish same-date share prices or comparable valuation multiples. A “cheapest” or “best” stock conclusion requires current prices, consistently defined valuation measures, balance-sheet data and company guidance, with accounting and business-mix differences explained.
