An individual stock gives you exposure to one company; an S&P 500 index fund gives you exposure to a basket of securities represented by the index. The better fit depends on your goals, time horizon, risk tolerance, costs, and willingness to research and monitor companies—not on a guarantee that either approach will outperform.
What are you buying?
Individual stocks
When you buy a company’s stock, you gain direct exposure to that business. Its prospects and market value affect your investment, so an adverse company-specific outcome can have a substantial effect—especially if you hold only a few stocks.

An S&P 500 index fund
An index fund is a mutual fund or exchange-traded fund (ETF) that seeks to track a market index. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) explains that investors cannot invest directly in an index; a fund provides indirect exposure to it. Depending on its method, an index fund may hold all the securities in its index or a representative sample. See the SEC’s Investor Bulletin: Index Funds.
How do the trade-offs compare?
| Consideration | Individual stocks | S&P 500 index fund |
|---|---|---|
| Exposure | Direct exposure to each company you choose; company-specific results matter. | Indirect exposure to an index basket through a mutual fund or ETF. |
| Diversification | Depends on the number of companies you hold and how concentrated your portfolio is. | Spreads exposure across the fund’s holdings, but remains exposed to the risks of the securities in the index. Check the fund’s actual holdings. |
| Research and oversight | You choose companies and decide how to research and monitor them. | A traditional index approach generally follows a passive strategy and does not frequently select securities. |
| Costs | Trading and brokerage costs depend on your account, provider, and activity; they are not quantified here. | Operating expenses, trading costs, tracking error, and possible intermediary charges can affect results. Check the fund’s prospectus and account fees. |
| Risks and results | A company’s value can fall substantially; its future return is not assured. | The fund can fall in value with its holdings and may not match the index exactly. No return advantage over stock-picking is established. |
What risks does diversification address—and what does it not?
Holding a range of investments can lower overall portfolio risk by reducing dependence on any one holding. An index fund therefore changes your company-specific exposure compared with a single stock, but it does not remove the possibility of losses. The fund remains exposed to risks in the securities it owns, and its value can decline.

Tracking is not necessarily exact. A fund that samples an index may differ from it, and expenses and trading costs can contribute to underperformance relative to the index. The SEC discusses these risks in its index-fund bulletin. Diversification can lower overall portfolio risk, but it does not promise protection from losses.
How should you compare costs?
Do not assume that every index fund is inexpensive, or that its stated operating expense is the only charge. The SEC says fees and expenses reduce investment returns. A fund’s prospectus includes a standardized fee table; brokerage commissions and intermediary fees may also apply. The SEC’s July 23, 2025 bulletin on mutual fund and ETF fees and expenses explains these disclosures.

For a specific fund, check its latest prospectus and shareholder report for its expenses, holdings, investment method, risks, and performance disclosures. Costs for buying individual stocks also depend on the brokerage account and how often you trade; compare the charges that apply to your own account rather than assuming either approach is cost-free.
Which approach fits your goals?
The SEC’s 2026 investor guidance says asset allocation depends on risk tolerance and investment timeframe. Use those factors alongside your appetite for company research and oversight when weighing the trade-offs.

- Consider individual stocks if you deliberately want company-specific exposure and are prepared to make and monitor your own company and diversification decisions.
- Consider an S&P 500 index fund if you want exposure to the index through one fund and accept market risk, fund costs, and the possibility that its returns will not match the index exactly.
- Revisit the choice if your goals, time horizon, or tolerance for risk change. Neither option is a universal fit.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can you conclude that one will outperform?
Not from the comparison alone. An index fund’s result depends on the index and the particular fund, including its costs and tracking. A stock-picking result depends on which stocks are selected, when they are held, and the costs involved. Without a specified fund, time period, and stock-selection method, there is no sound basis to claim that one approach will outperform the other.
