If you want the best chance of keeping, lending, or reselling a game, buy a genuine physical disc or cartridge from a seller that shows the exact item, accepts returns, and offers payment protection. A physical copy gives you control of a particular disc or cartridge, but it does not guarantee that the game will run without patches, an account, proprietary hardware, or an active server. Digital purchases are normally account-bound licenses, and subscriptions are time-limited access, so neither is usually suitable for resale.
The safest purchase is therefore the format whose dependencies you can accept: physical media for tangible ownership and resale, a carefully checked digital license for convenience, or a subscription only when you are comfortable treating the game as temporary access.

What you are actually buying
“Buy” can describe three legally and technically different arrangements. Before comparing prices, identify which one a listing offers and what remains available if a storefront, account, device, or server disappears.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsPhysical disc or cartridge
A disc or cartridge is a particular copy of a work. In the United States, the first-sale rule generally lets the owner of a lawfully acquired copy dispose of that copy without asking the copyright holder. The U.S. Department of Justice summarizes the rule this way: “The first sale doctrine, codified at 17 U.S.C. § 109, provides that an individual who knowingly purchases a copy of a copyrighted work from the copyright holder receives the right to sell, display or otherwise dispose of that particular copy.” Section 109 includes statutory qualifications, and laws differ by country, so this is not a universal promise of resale rights.

Physical ownership is strongest when the game is playable from the media and does not depend on an online service. Many modern releases still require an installation, a large patch, an account link, a one-time code, or servers for part of the game. A disc can also become unreadable, a cartridge can fail, and the required console or optical drive can become scarce.
Digital console or PC license
A digital transaction normally grants permission to access software through an account, storefront, device, and technical-protection system. The Federal Trade Commission warns that clicking “buy” may provide only a license, not ownership of a transferable copy. Access can depend on the seller remaining in business, continued redownload support, compatible hardware, authentication, and compliance with the account terms.
Digital licenses are convenient: delivery is immediate, storage is compact, and a console or computer can often reinstall the game without handling media. They are generally poor candidates for lending or resale because the license is tied to your account and the terms commonly prohibit transfer. For example, Microsoft’s digital-goods rules state that these licenses generally may not be transferred or resold. Product-specific usage terms also apply on PlayStation; its rules distinguish digital usage terms from separate cancellation and refund terms for physical goods.

Subscription or streaming access
A subscription gives you access while your membership and the service continue. A catalog can change, a publisher can remove a title, and streaming can stop when a server, app, or network connection is unavailable. Unless the terms clearly grant a durable, transferable copy, treat the arrangement as rental-like access. Check whether downloads work offline, how often the service re-authenticates, and what happens to saved data after a title leaves the catalog.
Format comparison at a glance
| Decision factor | Physical disc or cartridge | Digital console or PC license | Subscription or streaming |
|---|---|---|---|
| Resale or lending | Usually the strongest option for the particular copy, subject to local law and any code or account requirement. | Usually restricted by account and license terms; resale is generally unavailable. | Not applicable while access is subscription-bound; you do not acquire a transferable copy. |
| Long-term access | Better when the game runs from the media and you retain compatible hardware; patches and servers may still be required. | Depends on account, storefront, DRM, redownload service, compatible device, and authentication. | Depends on membership, catalog availability, application support, and service continuity. |
| Convenience | Requires shipping or a store visit, handling, and storage. | Immediate delivery and no physical storage; installation can consume substantial disk space. | Immediate access to a changing catalog; streaming also depends on network quality. |
| Authenticity and fraud risk | Manageable with clear photographs, reputable sellers, return rights, and payment protection; counterfeit or damaged media remains a risk. | Lower counterfeit risk when purchased from the platform’s official store, but account scams and region restrictions remain possible. | Lower counterfeit risk, but access can disappear when a title or service changes. |
| Preservation burden | You must retain media, hardware, controllers, displays, patches, and documentation. | You must retain account access, installers or redownload capability, compatible hardware, and any required authentication. | You generally cannot preserve the service yourself; document the experience and dependencies instead. |
| Price recovery | Possible resale value, reduced by condition, completeness, shipping, region, and current demand. | Usually no resale value; compare the full price with the period you expect to use it. | Compare recurring fees with the number of games and months you will actually use. |
How to buy a physical game safely
Choose the exact version before you pay
Write down the platform, region, edition, language, and release variant you need. A standard edition can differ from a “complete” or “deluxe” edition in included content, while a cartridge from one region may have different language support or downloadable components from another. Confirm whether the listing is for the original game, a remake, a bundle, or a replacement case with different media.
Ask what is on the disc or cartridge and what must be downloaded. A box may contain only a code, a partial installation, or a disc that launches a download. A used code should be assumed redeemed unless the seller proves otherwise; do not assign it value in your offer. If the game includes an online pass or account-bound bonus, regard that material as unavailable until redeemed successfully on your own account.

Inspect the evidence in the listing
Request clear, current photographs rather than relying on stock art. The images should show:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- The disc label or cartridge front, including platform markings and region information.
- The readable side of the disc, or cartridge contacts and shell, under normal light.
- The case, manual, inserts, alternate cover, and any code card.
- Serial, edition, or product details that distinguish the item from a similar release.
- Any scratches, cracks, corrosion, missing tabs, water damage, or label lifting.
Vague photos, a price far below comparable listings, pressure to pay outside the marketplace, or a claim that a “full library” is pre-installed are warning signs. Pre-installed copyrighted libraries and copied media do not give you a clean chain of ownership and can fail after a system update.
Check the seller and transaction protections
Read recent feedback for descriptions of authenticity, packing, boot tests, and how the seller handled returns. Verify the return window, the condition standard, the dispute process, who pays return shipping, and whether the payment method allows a chargeback or formal buyer dispute. The FTC specifically recommends checking refund and return rules, who helps when something goes wrong, and whether the payment method is safe.
Keep the listing, messages, photographs, receipt, tracking record, and payment confirmation. Save them until the return period closes; retain the receipt and edition details longer if the game is valuable or collectible.
Use a receiving inspection
- Photograph the package before opening it if the box is damaged or the seller promised a particular condition.
- Compare the received disc or cartridge with the listing photographs and description. Record missing manuals, switched editions, or undisclosed damage immediately.
- Check the platform and region marking, then inspect the data surface or contacts without abrasive cleaning.
- Test the game on compatible hardware before the return window expires. Confirm that it reaches the title screen, reads consistently, and recognizes required content.
- Test every included code as soon as practical, but remember that code redemption can make a return more complicated; ask the seller or marketplace how a defective or misrepresented code is handled.
- Document errors with photographs or video and open a marketplace dispute before the deadline if the item is counterfeit, defective, incomplete, or materially different from the listing.
Buying a used console with a game
A game can be genuine and still be unusable when the console is locked to another person’s account or missing a proprietary accessory. Ask the seller for a video showing the console powering on, reading the game, reaching gameplay, and recognizing the controller or memory card. PlayStation’s official used-product guidance also recommends video proof and seller deactivation.
- Confirm a factory reset and removal of the previous owner’s account. Do not accept a device that still requests someone else’s password.
- Verify the exact model, region, storage capacity, drive type, and included cables, power supply, controller, dongle, and stand.
- Ask whether the console has been modified, repaired, banned from online services, or exposed to liquid or excessive heat.
- Check that the video output works with a display you can use; an obsolete connector can turn a working console into an expensive project.
- Include shipping insurance or signature delivery when the replacement cost is high.
Digital purchase due diligence
Digital buying is reasonable when immediate access matters more than resale and you accept account dependence. Do these checks before confirming payment:

- Read the product page for platform, region, language, edition, included downloadable content, and any requirement for a separate launcher or account.
- Open the current license, usage, refund, and cancellation terms. Look for transfer restrictions, device limits, offline rules, and provisions covering storefront closure or service interruption.
- Check the hardware and operating-system requirements, storage requirement, controller support, and whether the game uses always-online authentication.
- Confirm how reinstalls work. Identify whether the storefront keeps a purchase history, whether you can download an installer, and whether an account recovery method is enabled.
- Use a personal account protected by a unique password and multifactor authentication. Never buy a “shared account,” an account with preloaded games, or credentials supplied by a stranger.
- Save the receipt, order number, edition, patch version, and any local installer or documentation that the terms allow you to keep.
Digital ownership language on a checkout button does not override the license. The FTC’s consumer guidance captures the practical distinction: “When you buy a physical item, you’ve got it. It’s yours.” That statement does not mean every physical game is independent of servers, nor does it convert a digital license into a transferable copy.
What to verify before relying on a game long term
Use this dependency inventory for any format. A game is only as durable as the least replaceable component in its startup path.
Installation and patches
Determine whether the physical media contains a complete, playable build or merely an installer. Record the version that works, the size of mandatory patches, and whether a first-run update is required. Keep enough storage and a compatible operating system for that version. If a patch changes the game materially, preserve notes about the original behavior without assuming you can legally redistribute the software.
Accounts and authentication
List every account needed: platform account, publisher account, launcher, online identity, or code redemption account. Record the recovery email, multifactor method, and device authorization limits. An account that cannot be recovered is a single point of failure even when the disc is in your hand.
Online features and servers
Separate solo play, local multiplayer, downloadable content, matchmaking, leaderboards, and cloud saves. Test the functions you care about while the service works. A shutdown may leave a campaign playable but remove multiplayer, authentication, or a required server handshake.
Hardware and accessories
Retain the console or computer, optical drive, controller, memory card, adapter, power supply, and a display connection that can be replaced. Library of Congress preservation guidance notes that console games may require the proprietary platform or an emulated equivalent running on a commonly available operating system. Emulation can be technically useful, but it does not erase copyright or license restrictions.

A practical preservation plan
Keep the original package together
Store the disc or cartridge with its case, manual, inserts, and a note stating whether each code was redeemed. Use an archival video-game storage case only after verifying that its size, materials, and closure fit the specific media without stressing labels or contacts. Keep media cool, dry, and away from direct sunlight and magnetic or abrasive hazards.
Maintain a playable setup
Keep compatible hardware, adapters, controllers, memory cards, cables, and a known-good display connection. Test the setup periodically rather than waiting until the original console fails. Replace batteries or capacitors through a qualified repairer when the design requires maintenance, and retain parts that are difficult to source.
Record the working state
Create a simple record containing the platform model, region, edition, disc or cartridge identifier, software version, patch state, required account, online features, server dependencies, and date of the last successful test. Store copies of manuals and packaging as stable documents or scans. For online-dependent software, make a short video showing menus, settings, and representative play so the experience is documented even if the service later disappears. The Library of Congress recommends this kind of documentation when an unavailable preservation copy of gameplay cannot be created.
Understand the legal limits
Do not treat unauthorized ROM collections, copied pre-installed libraries, or circumvention devices as safe preservation shortcuts. Unauthorized copies can infringe copyright, and unauthorized devices may stop working after network updates. In the United States, a regulation permits eligible libraries, archives, and museums to restore access to lawfully acquired games after an authentication server shuts down. That exemption is limited to qualifying institutions and circumstances; it does not create a general consumer right to copy or bypass protection.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to compare total cost and resale potential
The cheapest sticker price is not necessarily the lowest-cost way to play. For a physical copy, add shipping, a suitable drive or console, replacement controllers, required storage, patches or downloadable content, and the likely cost of reselling it. Estimate resale from completed sales of the same platform, region, edition, and condition rather than optimistic asking prices. Deduct marketplace fees, packing, postage, and the possibility that a redeemed code makes the copy less desirable.

Decision paths for common buyers
You expect to resell or lend the game
Choose a complete physical copy with a clear chain of custody. Confirm that the game itself, rather than only a single-use code, is on the media. Retain the case and inserts, and disclose redeemed codes, region, condition, and online requirements in your eventual listing.
You want the fastest, least-cluttered access
Choose a digital license from the platform you already use, after checking offline behavior, account recovery, refund terms, and server requirements. Accept that the license normally cannot be transferred.
You want to sample many games
A subscription can be sensible when the catalog and monthly cost match your play pattern. Download titles you want to try while they are available, check offline limits, and do not assume a downloaded file remains usable after membership or catalog access ends.
You are preserving a historically important or rare release
Prioritize authentic physical media, compatible hardware, documentation, and a written dependency record. Preserve the original packaging and working setup, and consult qualified institutional or legal guidance before making copies or bypassing technical protection.
Problems after purchase and the safest response
The disc or cartridge is not recognized
Stop repeated insertion if the media is cracked, warped, corroded, or shedding label material. Photograph the condition, test only in known-good compatible hardware, and use the seller’s return or dispute process before attempting repairs that could change the evidence. A gentle, manufacturer-appropriate cleaning may be reasonable for ordinary surface dirt; abrasive polishing can worsen damage.
A code is already redeemed
Capture the exact error without publishing the code. Compare the listing’s promise with the code’s stated region and expiry, then contact the seller through the marketplace. If the listing valued the code as included content, request a remedy under the marketplace’s return policy rather than buying a replacement code and hoping to recover the cost.
The game requires an account or server you cannot access
Check whether the requirement applies to the entire game or only multiplayer, cloud saves, or bonus content. Recover the correct account through the platform’s official process; do not use a seller’s credentials. If a server shutdown makes a promised core feature unavailable, document the dependency and pursue a return or consumer remedy where the transaction terms permit it.

Final buying checklist
- Format identified: physical, digital license, or subscription.
- Platform, region, edition, language, and included content confirmed.
- Installation, patch, account, DRM, and server requirements understood.
- For used media: current photographs, seller feedback, return window, dispute route, and protected payment verified.
- For used hardware: boot-and-read video, factory reset, account deactivation, cables, storage, and display connection checked.
- Receipt, listing screenshots, serial or edition details, and condition evidence saved.
- Preservation needs matched to the format: media and hardware for physical, account and installers for digital, and service continuity for subscriptions.
- Total cost calculated using accessories, shipping, fees, DLC, subscriptions, and realistic resale value.
For a game you want to keep, resell, or preserve, a genuine physical disc or cartridge from a protected marketplace is usually the most controllable starting point. Buy it with open eyes: ownership of the object is not ownership of every server, patch, account privilege, or copyrighted component needed to use it.
