Buy a new game at launch if playing now—alongside friends, during an active community moment, or before spoilers spread—is worth more to you than a possible discount. Wait if saving money matters more than timing and you can accept that no one can promise when, or whether, a particular game will go on sale.
What you are trading: time versus a possible saving
A launch purchase gets you the game when it becomes available. Whether that is worth paying the current price is personal: you might value joining friends on day one, playing while an online community is especially active, or avoiding spoilers. Those benefits are not reflected in the sticker price.

Waiting may lower the price, but a sale calendar is not a forecast for an individual game. Steam, PlayStation Store, and Nintendo publish sales or promotions, yet those pages do not guarantee that a specific new release will be included by a certain date—or at a particular discount. The available platform information does not establish an average discount or a typical wait time.
How to choose for a particular game

There is no supported universal discount threshold that makes waiting worthwhile. Set your own target price based on your budget and how urgently you want the game; treat a future sale as a possibility, not a scheduled saving.

What platform sale calendars can—and cannot—tell you
Steam
Valve documents four platform-wide seasonal sales each year. Its listed 2026 dates include the Autumn Sale, October 1–8, and the Winter Sale, December 17, 2026–January 4, 2027; the official calendar also lists Spring and Summer 2027 dates. Dates can change, and eligibility rules apply. A seasonal event means there is an opportunity for discounts across the platform, not a promise that the game you want will be discounted. Steam’s discount rules are specific to Steam, not an industry-wide standard. Valve generally prohibits discounting a product within 30 days of release or a price increase. A publisher can configure an optional launch discount before release: Steam documents a 10–40% discount lasting 7–14 days. Steam also has rules about the price used as a discount reference and an exception for seasonal-sale discounts to ordinary cooldowns; that exception does not override the release and price-increase cooldowns. These rules concern publishers’ ability to set discounts, not a guarantee of what a player will pay. Details are in Steamworks discount documentation.

PlayStation Store
The US PlayStation Store deals page lists digital games and add-ons, and records 2026 promotions including the Spring Sale, Days of Play, and Summer Sale. Those events show that promotions occur; they do not establish a dependable interval or predict when a particular title will be discounted. Check the US PlayStation Store deals page for current offers in that region.

Nintendo’s US sales page lists offers on digital games and downloadable content and advises shoppers to check back. It is a place to check for current offers, not a promise about the next discount for a particular game. See Nintendo’s US sales and deals page.

Compare digital and packaged prices before buying
If a game is available in both formats, compare the actual offers for your title, platform, and region. Nintendo says packaged and digital versions can provide the same game experience, while costs and retail prices may differ. Its explanation is for Australia and New Zealand, so it should not be treated as a worldwide pricing rule; it also does not show that physical copies are always cheaper. Nintendo’s regional guidance says that from May 2026, new Nintendo-published digital titles exclusive to Switch 2 have a recommended retail price different from packaged versions, while retail partners set their own prices. Read the details in Nintendo Support’s Australia and New Zealand format and pricing information.
For your own comparison, check the platform store and relevant retailers for the exact edition you want. Account for region, availability, and whether the listed offer is current. A lower price in one format or at one retailer does not establish that every packaged or digital copy will cost less.

Do not count on a price adjustment after purchase
A later sale does not automatically mean the store will refund the difference. Steam Support says it cannot refund the price difference after a price drop and suggests requesting a refund of the original purchase and buying again at the sale price. That route depends on the purchase meeting Steam’s refund eligibility requirements; it is not a guaranteed price-protection benefit. Check Steam Support’s refund and price-drop guidance before relying on it.

A practical decision rule
- Decide what immediate access is worth to you. Consider friends, multiplayer timing, community activity, and spoiler exposure.
- Check current prices for the exact title and platform. Compare the platform store with relevant packaged and digital offers in your region.
- Set a personal target price if you are willing to wait. Do not treat a recurring sale event as a promise that this game will be discounted.
- Choose based on the trade-off you can accept. Pay the current price when the value of playing now justifies it; otherwise wait without assuming a particular discount date or amount.
