Fortune’s list names the firms it recognizes; it does not mean Burns & McDonnell took first place or was ranked the overall best engineering workplace.

How did Fortune determine the ranking?
Fortune says it partnered with Great Place To Work and analyzed feedback representing more than 14,000 U.S. employees at companies eligible for the engineering list. The company announcement says the industry survey evaluated confidence in leadership, respect, fairness in workplace decisions and coworker camaraderie.

What the employee-survey figures mean
The more-than-14,000 figure refers to responses representing employees at companies eligible for the engineering ranking. Separately, Burns & McDonnell’s September 30 announcement says Great Place To Work’s broader 2025 and 2026 U.S. survey pool comprised more than 1.3 million confidential surveys representing the experiences of 7.3 million U.S. workers. Those broader totals should not be mistaken for the engineering-list response count.
What Burns & McDonnell says about its workplace
The company describes itself as a 100% employee-owned engineering and construction firm founded in 1898, with more than 75 offices worldwide. It says its integrated design-build approach brings engineering and construction professionals together across a project lifecycle, and that it invests in training, mentorship, continuing education and leadership development.

Chair and CEO Leslie M. Duke said, “Engineering is fundamentally about solving complex challenges, and it requires talented people who are empowered to learn, grow and contribute.” That statement expresses the company’s perspective on its approach; it is not evidence of the ranking criteria. Company descriptions also cannot establish that every employee experiences the workplace in the same way.
What the ranking tells job seekers—and what it doesn’t
The No. 19 placement is one signal about reported workplace experience among eligible employers, based on the methodology Fortune describes. It does not, by itself, compare pay, benefits, work-life balance or conditions on a particular team, nor does it establish that the firm produces better engineering work than its peers.

When comparing workplace rankings, check the publisher and year, geographic scope, eligibility rules, employee sample and whether the assessment relies on employee feedback. Different lists are not interchangeable, and a rank from one cannot be compared fairly with another without checking their scope. Fortune’s published ranking does not provide a like-for-like comparison with another 2026 engineering workplace list.
