Burlap vs. Linen vs. Canvas for Dressmaking: Which Fabric Should You Use?

Choose linen for most comfortable clothing, cotton canvas for structured garments and accessories, and burlap only when a deliberately rough, rustic effect is part of the design. Linen breathes, absorbs and releases moisture, and drapes more easily than the other two. Canvas supplies firmness and wear resistance but can feel heavy or stiff. Ordinary burlap is coarse and sheds, so it normally belongs in lined costumes, bags, trims, millinery and décor rather than an unlined blouse or dress. Because fiber blends, finishes, weave density and weight can change the result, prewash and test a sample before cutting your pattern.

Quick verdict: match the fabric to the job

Need Best choice Why Main compromise
Cool, breathable everyday clothing Fine- or medium-weight linen Flax fabric feels cool, absorbs moisture and dries quickly. It wrinkles readily, has little elasticity and may shrink.
Firm shape and hard wear Light or medium cotton canvas Its closely woven cotton structure supports jackets, chore coats, structured skirts and costume pieces. Heavier weights can be stiff, bulky and less airy.
Rustic texture or theatrical effect Burlap or jute The open, irregular surface creates an unmistakable sackcloth look for trims, bags and costumes. Ordinary grades are rough, shed fibers and can irritate skin.
Unlined garment worn next to skin Linen It is the least abrasive and most moisture-friendly option of these three. Expect a relaxed, creased appearance rather than a crisp, permanent finish.

“Burlap,” “linen” and “canvas” describe broad fabric categories, not one universal specification. A lightweight linen blend may behave very differently from a heavyweight linen, and a soft finished canvas may feel unlike untreated duck. Read the fiber label, examine the weave and judge the actual cloth in your hands before committing to a garment.

What each fabric actually is

Burlap and jute

The International Trade Centre describes burlap as “Originally coarse plain weave jute fabric used for sacking and upholstery lining.” The Museum of Fine Arts Boston CAMEO database broadens the definition to a coarse plain-weave fabric made from jute, flax or hemp. In retail stores, the term most often means jute sacking.

That origin explains burlap’s behavior. Yarns are comparatively rough, the surface can be irregular, and loose fibers may shed during cutting and sewing. The open weave does not make ordinary burlap comfortable: the hand remains scratchy and the edges can fray quickly. Burlap is therefore a niche apparel material. It works for rustic costumes, vests or overskirts with a lining, theatrical scarecrow effects, bags, trims and millinery bases. Keep it away from high-friction areas such as necklines, armholes and waistbands unless a lining or facing isolates the skin.

Linen from flax

Linen is made from the stem fiber of the flax plant, Linum usitatissimum. The Canadian Conservation Institute characterizes new linen as strong, absorbent, quick-drying and cool to the touch. The Linen Lounge reports that linen can absorb up to 20 percent of its own weight in moisture and transport that moisture outward instead of leaving it trapped against the body.

Flax fibers are stronger when wet than when dry. Depending on the yarn, tear resistance can be 20 to 30 percent higher than cotton. That strength does not make linen immune to damage: it has low resiliency, so creases do not spring back, and repeated sharp folds can eventually break fibers. University of Georgia guidance also identifies linen as poor in wrinkle resistance and elasticity and warns that untreated cloth can shrink.

Fine and medium weights suit shirts, dresses, skirts, trousers and loose jackets where airflow and natural texture are welcome. A washed linen may already have a softer hand and more relaxed drape; a crisp finish may look sharper initially but can change after laundering.

Canvas and cotton duck

The International Trade Centre defines canvas as a strong, firm, closely woven cotton fabric. It notes that “canvas” and “duck” are sometimes used interchangeably, with canvas commonly referring to heavier weights. Big Duck Canvas describes cotton duck as a heavy, plain-woven cotton used for aprons, totes, backpacks, duffels and other hard-wearing sewn goods.

Canvas holds its shape instead of flowing around the body. Lightweight canvas can work for structured skirts, chore coats, jackets, corset-style panels, hats and costumes. Medium and heavy weights are generally more suitable for bags, aprons and utility pieces than for a complete garment. New duck can feel stiff; washing and wear may soften it, but the underlying firmness remains.

How the three compare in dressmaking

Property Burlap Linen Canvas or cotton duck
Typical fiber Usually jute; some definitions include flax or hemp. Flax stem fiber. Usually cotton; blends also exist.
Weave and surface Coarse plain weave, often irregular and open. Plain or other weaves ranging from fine and smooth to slubby. Closely woven, firm plain weave; duck is generally heavy.
Skin comfort Low for ordinary grades; rough and potentially irritating. Highest of the three for warm-weather clothing. Acceptable in lighter weights; heavy cloth may feel stiff or abrasive.
Drape Rustic body with little fluidity. Light weights can hang softly; creases are part of the character. Structured and shape-holding rather than fluid.
Moisture and heat Open weave does not overcome its rough hand. Absorbs and releases moisture quickly; feels cool. Airflow decreases as weight and density increase.
Durability Robust for sacks and lining, not refined apparel. Strong, but repeated sharp creasing can break fibers. Designed for firm, hard-wearing applications.
Elasticity Very limited. Low. Low; structure comes from the weave, not stretch.
Wrinkle behavior Texture hides some creasing, but it does not press smooth like dress fabric. Wrinkles readily and may need pressing or an intentionally rumpled finish. Resists collapse through stiffness, though heavy folds can remain.
Shrinkage and care Can change size and shed; follow the label and test. Prewash unless stabilized; follow the care label. Prewash when washable and account for possible shrinkage or dye loss.

Which fabric is best for a dress?

For a conventional summer dress, linen is the soundest starting point. Choose a weight that supports the pattern without becoming transparent, and consider lining or a slip where the weave is open. Linen’s moisture handling and cool hand are useful in warm weather, while its wrinkles are a predictable style and care issue rather than a defect.

Canvas can make a dress, but it changes the design brief. Use light canvas for a pinafore, utility dress, sculpted tent dress or costume with strong seams. Add ease where the cloth cannot flex, and avoid patterns that depend on soft gathers or fluid bias movement. Medium or heavy canvas can make a garment tiring to wear and difficult to ease around curved sections.

Burlap is appropriate for a deliberately rustic or theatrical dress only when the pattern includes a lining, underdress or controlled areas of contact. It is a poor choice for an everyday unlined dress because abrasion, loose yarns and laundering complications outweigh its visual novelty.

Is burlap comfortable to wear?

Ordinary burlap is generally not comfortable directly against skin. Its coarse yarns and uneven surface can scratch, especially at the neck, underarms and waist. A lining made from a smooth fabric, a separate underlayer or strategic facings can make a costume wearable for limited periods. Before construction, rub a swatch against the inside of your forearm and wear it under a strap or waistband for several minutes. If the sample irritates you, a lining will need to isolate every contact area, not just the bodice.

Inspect the cut edges for loose strands and secure them with a suitable finish. Vacuum or shake out the work area after cutting, and keep burlap away from projects where shed fibers could contaminate delicate surfaces. Do not assume that an open weave means softness; the fiber and yarn preparation determine the hand.

Can you make clothes from canvas?

Yes, provided the canvas weight matches the pattern. Lightweight cotton canvas is practical for chore coats, work shirts with a firm silhouette, structured skirts, overshirts, hats and costume armor. Cotton duck is especially useful when a bag, apron or panel must stand up to abrasion.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before cutting, test whether your machine can feed the layers. Canvas creates thick seam intersections, so choose a needle intended for heavy woven fabric, use a longer stitch where appropriate and reduce bulk by grading seam allowances or using a lapped seam. Check that closures, buttonholes and facings can handle the cloth. If a test seam tunnels, skips stitches or becomes too rigid to turn, the fabric is too heavy for that pattern or needs a construction change.

Does linen breathe?

Linen is the most breathable option in this comparison for ordinary clothing. Its flax fibers absorb moisture and move it outward, and the fabric feels cool to the touch. Breathability still depends on weight, weave, finish and garment ease: a dense heavy linen with a close lining will feel warmer than a loose lightweight shirt.

Linen is not stretchy. Build movement into the pattern with ease, pleats, gussets or a suitable closure rather than expecting the fabric to accommodate reach or sitting. Its low resiliency means sharp creases remain visible, so press with the grain and avoid repeatedly folding the same line when storing the garment.

Choose by garment and use case

Project Recommended fabric Selection notes
Button-up shirt or relaxed blouse Fine or medium linen Prioritize a soft hand and enough opacity; prewash for shrinkage.
Summer skirt or loose trousers Medium linen Allow for wrinkles and choose a lining if the weave is open.
Chore coat or work jacket Light or medium canvas Check movement ease, seam bulk and closure strength.
Structured costume or corset-style panel Light canvas, sometimes layered Canvas supplies body; line it for comfort.
Tote, backpack or apron Cotton duck or heavier canvas Use reinforced stress points and hardware rated for the load.
Rustic costume trim, scarecrow effect or prop Burlap Keep it lined or off skin; stabilize edges against fraying.
Millinery base Burlap or light canvas Choose according to the required stiffness and cover the interior.

A pre-cut fabric test that prevents expensive mistakes

  1. Read the label. Record fiber content, stated width, care instructions and whether the cloth is a blend, coated or prewashed.
  2. Measure the sample. Mark a 10-by-10-inch square, wash and dry it exactly as the finished garment will be cared for, then measure the change in length and width. Apply that shrinkage to your cutting plan.
  3. Check drape and recovery. Hold the swatch by one corner, compare it with the pattern’s intended silhouette and fold it sharply. Linen will crease; canvas will retain body; burlap will show a rustic, irregular surface.
  4. Test moisture handling. Place a small drop of water on the face. Observe whether it absorbs, spreads or beads, and how quickly the damp mark disappears. Finishes can make a fabric behave differently from its fiber label.
  5. Test abrasion and comfort. Rub the swatch against your forearm and inspect for shedding or irritation. Repeat over a seam allowance if the garment will have close-fitting areas.
  6. Sew a representative seam. Include the thickest intersection, a curve and any planned closure. Check skipped stitches, seam puckering, fraying, turning difficulty and whether the result still has the desired flexibility.
  7. Make a toile or partial sample. For canvas or burlap, test the collar, armhole, waistband or lining before cutting the complete garment.

Cutting and sewing considerations

Managing burlap

  • Cut with a fresh blade or sharp shears and keep the grain aligned; irregular yarns can distort a pattern.
  • Stabilize edges promptly with a narrow seam, binding, overcast stitch or lining construction.
  • Use a smooth lining and cover scratch-prone seams with facings or binding.
  • Plan for visible texture rather than trying to press burlap into a sleek finish.

Managing linen

  • Prewash and dry according to the final care routine before laying out the pattern.
  • Use stay tape or interfacing on necklines, shoulders and other areas that could stretch out.
  • Press while damp or use steam, but avoid repeatedly creating the same sharp fold.
  • Allow for ease because linen provides little elastic recovery.

Managing canvas

  • Match needle, thread and stitch length to the weight; test on scraps that include the same number of layers as the garment.
  • Grade or trim seam allowances at bulky intersections and plan how hems will turn.
  • Use a thimble, hump-jumper or suitable presser-foot aid when crossing thick seams.
  • Interface only where needed; excessive reinforcement can make an already firm fabric unwearable.

Care, shrinkage and longevity

Plant-fiber cloth can change size, color and hand during laundering. Follow the specific care label rather than relying on the generic name of the fabric. If the label permits washing, prewash a sample and then the yardage before cutting. Treat linen as a fabric that may become softer and more relaxed with use, while recognizing that repeated sharp creasing can weaken fibers. Store linen loosely rather than folded along one permanent line.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Canvas may soften after washing and wear, but heavy duck can remain substantial. Test for dye transfer, especially with dark colors, and avoid constructing a garment whose post-wash stiffness or shrinkage would alter the fit. Burlap may shed and distort; many decorative grades are not finished for repeated laundering. If a burlap costume must be cleaned, test the exact fabric and lining first and design it so the outer layer can be removed or replaced.

Common selection mistakes and fixes

Mistake: choosing by color or fiber name alone

Two fabrics labeled linen can differ dramatically in weight, weave and finish. The fix is to compare the actual swatch for opacity, drape, hand, shrinkage and seam behavior.

Mistake: using heavy canvas for a fluid pattern

Stiff cloth cannot create soft gathers or graceful bias movement. Switch to a lighter canvas, redesign for a structured silhouette or choose linen.

Mistake: putting ordinary burlap against bare skin

Replace it with lined construction, a smooth underlayer or a different fabric. If the rustic look is essential, confine burlap to panels, trim or accessories.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mistake: skipping the prewash

A garment cut before shrinkage can become tight or distorted. Wash and dry a sample—or the full yardage—using the intended care method, then recalculate.

Mistake: ignoring seam bulk

Canvas and burlap can overwhelm small seam allowances, collars and buttonholes. Sew a layered test, grade the allowances and alter the pattern before cutting the final cloth.

A practical decision framework

  1. Start with skin contact. If the fabric will touch skin for hours, default to linen; use canvas only in a light, softened grade and isolate burlap with a lining.
  2. Define the silhouette. Choose linen for movement and relaxed drape, canvas for a shape that must stand, and burlap for visible rustic texture.
  3. Estimate heat and moisture. Warm-weather garments benefit from linen’s absorption and drying behavior. Dense canvas is less airy, while burlap’s open weave does not make its coarse hand comfortable.
  4. Check wear points. Workwear, bags and aprons favor canvas. Linen is strong but should not be repeatedly folded into sharp stress lines. Burlap is durable in sack-like uses but is not a refined substitute for apparel fabric.
  5. Confirm care and shrinkage. Reject any cloth whose required cleaning method conflicts with the finished garment’s use.
  6. Approve the sample. Do not cut until the washed swatch, seam test and comfort test all match the pattern’s demands.

Bottom line for dressmakers

Linen is the best all-around answer when the priority is a comfortable, breathable garment with natural drape and an intentionally relaxed appearance. Cotton canvas is the better tool when structure, abrasion resistance and shape retention matter more than softness. Burlap has a legitimate place in dressmaking, but mainly as a lined or limited-contact material for rustic costumes, trims, bags and millinery. The fabric label is only the starting point: weight, weave density, finish, blend content, shrinkage and your actual seam sample determine whether the project succeeds.
