Burger King Japan says unauthorized access to the system managing its official-app membership information exposed approximately 11.18 million member records (often written in Japan as 1,118万件). The access occurred between October 2 and October 7, 2026, the company confirmed the incident on October 13, and it disclosed the breach on October 15. The reported data includes names, contact details, dates of birth and other membership attributes. Burger King Japan says it did not hold credit-card numbers and had not confirmed password leakage or secondary misuse when it announced the incident.
What happened and when
The Japanese operator of Burger King reported unauthorized access to the system used for official-app member information. Public reporting gives the following timeline:

Credit cards and passwords
Burger King Japan said credit-card numbers were not held by the company, so card numbers were not part of the reported exposure. As of the October 15 announcement, the company had not confirmed that login passwords were leaked. That is a time-stamped status, not proof that passwords are permanently unaffected; a later investigation could revise the assessment.

Burger King Japan’s published wording said: 「なお、現時点において、本件に起因する不正利用などの二次被害は確認されておりません。」 In English: “At present, no secondary damage such as unauthorized use attributable to this matter has been confirmed.” This means the company had not identified confirmed follow-on misuse by October 15; it does not eliminate the risk created by exposed contact and identity data.

Why the exposed fields matter
An email address paired with a name, phone number, prefecture and date of birth can make a fraudulent message look specific and credible. The member ID, registration details and email-verification status may give a scammer additional context for impersonating customer support. The reported data does not include card numbers, but criminals can still use personal details to solicit payment information, one-time codes or passwords through a separate phishing site or phone call.

- Be skeptical of unexpected messages. Treat emails, SMS messages and calls claiming to be from Burger King as potentially fraudulent, especially those mentioning account problems, refunds, coupons or mobile orders.
- Do not use message links or attachments. Do not open an unexpected attachment or enter member information, passwords, payment details or one-time codes after following a link in a Burger King-branded message.
- Verify through an independent route. Open the Burger King Japan website or app yourself, or use contact details published on the official site. Do not rely on a phone number, QR code or URL supplied in the suspicious message.
- Change reused passwords elsewhere. Password leakage had not been confirmed as of October 15, but any password reused on other services should be replaced there with a unique password. Never disclose the replacement password to a caller or message sender.
- Watch for targeted follow-up. Monitor your email, phone and account activity for unusual verification requests, password-reset notices or requests for personal information. Keep copies of suspicious messages so they can be reported.
- Check official updates. Burger King Japan’s October 15 notice page is the appropriate place to look for later findings about the investigation, affected records or member instructions.
What to expect next
The company said it was investigating the cause with an external specialist organization. Until that work identifies the entry point and confirms the final scope, statements about passwords, specific records or attacker activity should be read as the position known on the date issued. Members should rely on dated updates from Burger King Japan rather than posts that claim a vulnerability, attacker or compensation plan without an official confirmation.
