In June 2023, researchers found a publicly accessible .env file on a Burger King France job-offer subdomain. It contained database credentials and Google tracking identifiers, creating potential security risks. The reporting did not establish that an attacker used them or that applicant data was stolen.

What was exposed, and where?

Cybernews reported that researchers discovered the file on June 1, 2023, on a subdomain of Burger King France’s website used to post job offers. An .env file commonly holds configuration details that an application needs; when such a file is publicly accessible, values intended to remain private can be revealed.

The exposed file included multiple credentials, including database credentials, as well as Google Tag Manager and Google Analytics identifiers. Cybernews’s incident report describes the discovery and the researchers’ findings.

What could the exposed credentials and identifiers have enabled?

Database access

Cybernews said the database credentials could potentially let a malicious actor connect to the database and read or modify stored data. The researchers said they could not inspect its contents for legal reasons. They believed it likely contained job postings and might have included information entered by applicants, but the available reporting does not confirm the database’s contents or that anyone accessed it.

Tag Manager and Analytics misuse

The researchers described a possible route in which the Google Tag Manager identifier, combined with other vulnerable points, could allow someone to change the container identifier and execute JavaScript on the website. They also said the Google Analytics identifier could potentially be misused to distort or disrupt analytics. These were potential attack paths, not reported incidents of successful exploitation.

Was applicant data stolen?

The reporting does not establish that applicant records were accessed, disclosed, or stolen. The researchers could not legally inspect the database, and the sources reviewed do not report that an attacker exploited the exposed credentials or identifiers. That distinction matters: exposed secrets can create a serious opportunity for misuse, but exposure alone is not proof that data was taken.

Was the issue fixed?

Cybernews and Dark Reading’s August 4, 2023, report said Burger King fixed the issue after researchers notified the company. The available incident reporting does not include an independent Burger King statement confirming remediation or a finding that no unauthorized access occurred.

How this relates to the earlier France incident

Dark Reading described the 2023 misconfiguration as the second similar incident since 2019. It said the earlier Burger King France misconfiguration exposed information about children who bought Burger King menus. The reporting summarized here does not establish further details about that earlier incident, so its scope and technical cause should not be inferred.

What organizations can learn from the exposure

This incident illustrates why configuration files containing secrets must not be served publicly and why credentials should be limited to the access an application actually needs. Tag-manager access also deserves careful control because it can affect code running on a website. If secrets are exposed, an organization’s response should include restricting access, rotating affected credentials, and investigating whether they were used. The reports do not establish which of these controls Burger King implemented.
