There is no best e-commerce platform for every bullion dealer. WooCommerce has a documented bullion-focused plugin route; Shopify has a precious-metals pricing app listed in its App Store; and Medusa provides a code-based route for custom pricing and checkout behavior. Choose by matching the platform to your price-update and quote rules, payment and fulfillment providers, integrations, and ability to maintain the system—not by assuming any option handles the whole bullion workflow out of the box.
What should a bullion dealer decide first?
Start with the price a customer sees and determine how it becomes the price in the cart and at checkout. A bullion store may calculate a product price from a metal price plus a dealer-selected premium or spread. If spot moves while a shopper browses, the product page, cart, and checkout need a defined, consistent response.

- How are premiums or spreads, purity, variants, currencies, rounding, and minimum prices handled?
- Is a displayed price held for a set period, recalculated when added to the cart, or validated again at checkout?
- What should happen if the price source is delayed or unavailable, or the market changes during checkout?
- Which system owns product data, stock, wholesaler cost, customer orders, and any ERP, inventory, or vaulting records?
These are workflow requirements, not merely app features. The platform documentation and listings described here do not establish that any option natively supplies every dealer’s formula, quote lock, or live updates to an already-open page.

Its listed refresh interval—60 seconds by default, configurable down to 10 seconds—is a plugin setting stated by the vendor, not a guarantee that a shopper’s already-open page, cart, or checkout will update in the same way. Ask the plugin provider or developer to demonstrate each stage of your required flow, including what happens when spot changes between adding an item to the cart and paying.
Check WooCommerce service restrictions before building around it
WooCommerce says its open-source plugin can be used for highly regulated or legally restricted products, while also stating that stores selling those products cannot use certain Automattic services: WooPayments, WooCommerce Shipping, WooCommerce Tax, WordPress.com hosting, and WooCommerce.com extensions. Payment gateways, merchant accounts, and shipping providers may impose their own restrictions as well. Verify the rules for your exact products and providers before settling on a store design or migration plan.

When is Shopify a sensible choice?
Consider Shopify if managed commerce operations are important and the available app and payment arrangements support your pricing and transaction requirements. The Shopify App Store listing for Precious Metal Product Prices describes gold and silver prices linked to precious-metals spot prices, with delayed and real-time options.
Do not infer a particular update interval, price, supported metal, or checkout behavior from the general app description. App plans and capabilities can change. Check the current listing and ask the app vendor which parts of the shopping journey update, what each plan supports, and how it handles your currencies, metals, premiums, minimums, and order rules. Shopify also says merchants are responsible for complying with applicable laws in the merchant’s and customers’ jurisdictions and with Shopify’s terms, its Acceptable Use Policy, and terms for services they use. That general guidance does not establish whether a particular dealer, payment arrangement, product, or geography will be accepted; confirm directly with Shopify and the payment provider.

When is Medusa a sensible choice?

This establishes an implementation path, not a complete production bullion store, a built-in quote-lock service, or turnkey support for a specific processor or dealer system. Before choosing it, assign ownership for engineering, security, monitoring, price-source failures, integration conflicts, and maintenance. A bespoke implementation can be tailored to the dealer’s rules, but the dealer or its developer remains responsible for making those rules work in production.

What should you verify about payments, compliance, and fulfillment?
Platform selection does not settle whether your business can sell a particular product through a particular provider. Confirm the relevant requirements for the jurisdictions where the business operates and where its customers are located; this is not a legal determination.

- Ask for a complete workflow demonstration. Use a scenario in which the market changes after a customer opens a product page, adds the item to a cart, and begins checkout. Check the displayed, cart, and accepted prices, plus the handling of a failed or delayed price feed.
- Test the integrations and exception paths. Verify inventory and order synchronization, refunds, order changes, failed payments, and any wholesaler or fulfillment handoff relevant to your operation.
- Choose based on the work you can own. Favor WooCommerce when its plugin, WordPress fit, and service restrictions check out; Shopify when its managed setup, current app, and provider combination meet the workflow; or Medusa when custom behavior justifies a development and maintenance commitment.
