Yes, researchers made a wood material with substantially improved strength and toughness and reported improved ballistic resistance. But “bulletproof” is headline shorthand: the reported bullet-stopping demonstration was an experimental test, not proof that the material protects against every bullet or qualifies as certified armor.
Is bulletproof wood real?
A research team reported a process for turning natural wood into a much denser material with improved mechanical properties and ballistic resistance. The study was published by Jianwei Song and colleagues in Nature on 8 February 2018: “Processing bulk natural wood into a high-performance structural material”.

The paper’s abstract reports increases of more than tenfold in strength, toughness and ballistic resistance compared with natural wood in the study’s tests. Those findings describe laboratory measurements, not a universal performance rating. In particular, “ballistic resistance” does not mean the material is guaranteed to stop any bullet.

The researchers partially removed lignin and hemicellulose, components of natural wood, by boiling it in an aqueous mixture of sodium hydroxide and sodium sulfite. They then hot-pressed the treated wood. The process collapsed the wood’s cell walls and packed its cellulose nanofibres into a denser, aligned structure. The authors reported applying the method to several wood species.

This is not ordinary lumber simply pressed into shape: chemical treatment changes the wood before compression. That denser structure is central to the reported gains, but it also changes the material’s dimensions and makes orientation and geometry important to how it behaves.
What did the study measure?

The paper also reports improvements in measured hardness, impact, bending and compression properties. Results vary with the test and loading direction, so they cannot be reduced to a single claim that the wood is “stronger than steel.”

Can wood stop a bullet?
Chemistry World reported that the researchers used a homemade ballistic tester and that a five-layer barrier made from the densified wood trapped a bullet. That is a proof-of-concept demonstration, not a standardized test across specified ammunition, projectile speeds, distances, thicknesses or construction designs. The cited reporting does not establish certification as body armor.
A material-level strength result does not by itself establish that a beam, wall, vehicle panel or wearable protective item will be safe or effective. Those applications require designs tested for their intended loads and conditions. The study’s ballistic result should not be used to choose or construct protective equipment.

What are the practical limits?
Density and dimensions
The reported density rises from 0.43 ± 0.02 to 1.30 ± 0.02 g/cm³. Greater density affects weight, and compression changes dimensions. As Dan Ridley-Ellis, head of the Centre for Wood Science and Technology at Edinburgh Napier University, told Chemistry World: “It’s certainly not going to replace wooden joists or wall elements, because they’ve decreased the dimensions, but I can see it being used as a reinforcing element.”
Moisture and weather exposure
The humidity test showed a limited, specific result: a painted sample did not change thickness during that 128-hour, 95% relative-humidity protocol. It does not demonstrate resistance to rain, immersion, repeated wetting and drying, or years of outdoor exposure.

Engineering and production
Using the material in a product would require more than reproducing a laboratory strength figure. Designers would need relevant tests for loading direction, geometry, moisture exposure and the intended application, alongside information about manufacturing scale and cost. Polymer chemist Carmen Mihaela Popescu told Chemistry World that further research was needed to characterize the material.

The cited 2018 paper and contemporaneous reporting do not establish a current retail product, licensing arrangement or commercial availability. They also do not establish a validated building product or certified armor use. That is a limit of what these sources document, not proof that no commercial development exists anywhere today.
