Built-In Turntable Speakers vs. Separate Speakers: Which Should You Choose?

Choose built-in speakers if you want the fewest components, a compact setup and immediate playback. Choose separate speakers if you want to select speaker models, place them independently, or upgrade parts over time. The important caveat is that neither label guarantees better sound: the actual turntable, speakers, phono stage, amplifier and room arrangement determine the result.

Before buying, trace the complete signal chain. Every record player needs a phono stage somewhere, and passive speakers also need an amplifier or receiver. A mismatch—such as connecting a phono-level output to a line-only input—can leave you with very low volume, distortion or no sound.

What “built-in speakers” and “separate speakers” actually mean

Turntables with built-in speakers

A built-in-speaker turntable combines the record player and sound output in one enclosure. You place the unit, connect power, put on a record and listen without choosing a separate speaker pair. That simplicity is useful in a bedroom, office, dorm room or small living space where minimizing cables and equipment matters.

“Built-in speakers” describes the speaker arrangement, not the rest of the electronics. A particular model may or may not include a phono preamp, Bluetooth, an auxiliary input, a headphone output or an output for external speakers. Check the current specification sheet and manual for those features instead of assuming they are present.

Turntables with separate speakers

Separate-speaker systems divide the components. The speakers may be powered (also called active), with an amplifier built into the speaker cabinet, or passive, which require a separate stereo amplifier or receiver.

This arrangement lets you choose speaker size, sound character and placement independently from the turntable. It also adds decisions: you must identify the output level, provide a phono stage, match inputs and include amplification where necessary.

The phono stage: the part every setup needs

A record cartridge produces a very low-level signal that also needs equalization. A phono stage (or phono preamp) boosts and equalizes that signal to the line level expected by most audio inputs. Cambridge Audio explains that this stage is required somewhere in a turntable playback chain.

There are three common locations:

  • Inside the turntable: a switch or menu may provide PHONO and LINE output modes.
  • Inside an amplifier or receiver: an input labeled PHONO includes the required stage.
  • As a separate component: an external phono preamp sits between the turntable and the amplifier or powered speakers.

If a turntable has only phono-level output and you connect it to a normal AUX, LINE, CD or RCA input, the music will usually be extremely quiet and tonally incorrect. Conversely, feeding a phono input with a signal that has already been amplified and equalized can overload that input and sound badly distorted.

How each system is wired

Built-in speakers

The basic path is contained within the product:

  1. Connect the turntable to AC power.
  2. Confirm whether its internal controls select PHONO or LINE operation; this is model-specific.
  3. Connect any optional source, such as Bluetooth or an auxiliary device, only to inputs listed in the manual.
  4. Place the unit on a stable, level surface and keep the volume moderate while testing.

Because the speakers and turntable share a cabinet, strong bass at high volume can transmit vibration back to the stylus. The severity varies by design and placement. Keep the unit away from walls or surfaces that resonate, and use the manufacturer’s recommended feet or isolation accessories if supplied.

Turntable and powered speakers

Powered speakers supply their own speaker amplification, but they do not automatically supply a phono stage. Use one of these chains:

  • Turntable with a built-in phono stage: turntable set to LINE → powered speaker line input.
  • Turntable without a phono stage: turntable set to PHONO → external phono preamp → powered speaker line input.

Fluance’s guidance emphasizes checking both the phono-preamp function and the speaker amplifier. Verify that the powered speaker accepts the connector and signal level your turntable provides; RCA and 3.5 mm inputs are common, but they are not guaranteed on every model.

Turntable and passive speakers

Passive speakers cannot drive themselves. A typical chain is:

Turntable → phono stage → stereo amplifier or receiver → passive speakers.

The phono stage can be in the turntable, in an amplifier’s PHONO input or in a separate preamp. A receiver can accept the turntable directly only when it has an appropriate PHONO input or when the turntable is switched to line-level output. Connect the amplifier’s speaker terminals to the passive speakers with the correct polarity and impedance range specified by both manufacturers.

Built-in versus separate speakers: decision table

Decision factor Built-in speakers fit better when… Separate speakers fit better when…
Convenience You want one self-contained product with fewer components and cables. You are comfortable selecting, connecting and configuring several components.
Space A compact footprint is important and the unit’s output suits the room. You have room to place speakers away from the turntable and spread them for stereo imaging.
Customization You are satisfied with the integrated speaker arrangement. You want to choose the speaker models and, for passive designs, the amplifier or receiver.
Compatibility The product’s listed inputs, outputs and phono-stage modes cover your sources. You can verify phono/line level, input types, amplification and speaker requirements before purchase.
Upgrades You prefer not to change individual components. You want to replace speakers, add a better phono stage or change amplification without replacing the entire system.
Sound goals You accept the sound of the specific all-in-one model after checking credible product-specific evaluations. You want a wider choice of speaker size and voicing, while accepting that component matching and placement determine the result.
Total cost The product’s price already includes the turntable, speakers and any built-in electronics; additional accessories depend on the model. Budget for speakers plus a phono stage and amplifier when those are not already included. Exact prices are not established here and vary by region and model.

Which option is likely to suit your room and listening habits?

Choose built-in speakers for a low-friction setup

Built-in speakers are sensible when you listen casually, move the system often, have limited shelf space or do not want to learn audio connections. They are also practical when the turntable will be used at moderate volume near the listener rather than to fill a large room.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Confirm that the product includes the input you need, such as Bluetooth or AUX.
  • Check whether an external-speaker output exists if you may expand later.
  • Look for a documented phono-stage arrangement; “built-in speakers” alone does not confirm one.
  • Assess where the controls and record lid will fit before placing the unit in a tight cabinet.

Choose powered speakers for a simpler separate system

Powered speakers offer component choice without requiring a separate receiver. This is often the middle path: you can position the speakers independently and replace them later, while avoiding a separate power amplifier.

Use powered speakers when the turntable provides line-level output or when you are prepared to add a phono preamp. Confirm that at least one speaker has the correct input and that the pair’s interconnect cable reaches across your intended placement.

Choose passive speakers when you want a traditional component system

Passive speakers make sense if you already own a suitable amplifier or receiver, want several source inputs, or expect to refine the system over time. They require more planning because the amplifier must be compatible with the speakers and must receive a line-level signal from a phono stage.

Fluance’s passive-speaker setup illustration places the speakers away from the turntable. That is a useful starting point for reducing acoustic feedback and creating a wider stereo image, not a universal room-acoustics rule.

Does separate always sound better?

No universal comparison establishes that every separate-speaker system outperforms every built-in-speaker turntable. Separate components give you more opportunities to select larger or better-suited speakers, separate them for stereo imaging and upgrade individual links. Those advantages can improve a carefully matched system, but a poor combination, incorrect signal level or bad placement can sound worse than a well-designed all-in-one product.

Fluance states that a separate-speaker system can provide superior audio quality to a built-in-speaker system. That is the manufacturer’s position, not a controlled, model-by-model test. Treat sound quality as dependent on the actual products, listening distance, room and setup rather than as a guaranteed result of the configuration label.

Step-by-step buying checklist

  1. Decide how much equipment you will accept. One enclosure favors built-in speakers; powered speakers add one external component; passive speakers normally add both an amplifier and separate speakers.
  2. Identify the turntable’s output. Read the manual for PHONO, LINE, switch positions and available connectors.
  3. Locate the phono stage. Mark whether it is inside the turntable, inside an amplifier’s PHONO input or supplied by an external preamp.
  4. Match the speaker type. Powered speakers need a suitable line-level input; passive speakers need an amplifier or receiver.
  5. Map every connection. Write the chain from cartridge to speakers before ordering cables or accessories.
  6. Measure the space. Include clearance for the record lid, ventilation around amplifiers and distance between left and right speakers.
  7. Plan your upgrade path. If you may change speakers or add sources, separate components provide more flexibility; if not, the extra hardware may offer little practical benefit.
  8. Check the current manual. Manufacturers can change inputs, switch behavior and included accessories between revisions and regions.

Correct use of PHONO, LINE and Bluetooth modes

Switch labels are not standardized across every turntable. Cambridge Audio’s Bluetooth FAQ for one specific model says PHONO bypasses its built-in phono preamp for use with an external or amplifier-integrated phono stage, while LINE enables Bluetooth. That instruction applies to the model addressed by that FAQ, not automatically to all turntables.

For your own unit, follow this sequence:

  1. Read the manual’s explanation of the PHONO/LINE switch.
  2. Use PHONO only when the next device provides a phono stage.
  3. Use LINE when connecting to a normal AUX, LINE or powered-speaker input that does not have a phono stage.
  4. If Bluetooth is involved, verify whether enabling it changes the analog output or switch position.

Placement and vibration considerations

Separate speakers let you keep high-volume speaker output away from the stylus and place the left and right channels at a suitable width. Keep both speakers on stable surfaces, aim their tweeters toward the listening position and avoid placing them directly on the same lightweight shelf as the turntable when vibration is a problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

With built-in speakers, you cannot create that physical separation. Keep the unit level, avoid resonant furniture and start at a moderate volume. If feedback appears as a low rumble that rises with volume, reduce the volume, move the unit or use the isolation method recommended for that model.

Troubleshooting common connection problems

Very quiet, thin or tinny sound

  • The turntable may be set to PHONO while connected to a line-level input.
  • The system may lack a phono stage.
  • An external preamp may be connected incorrectly or not powered.

Confirm the output mode, identify the phono stage and reconnect the chain so the signal is amplified and equalized exactly once.

Loud distortion or harsh sound

  • A line-level output may be connected to an amplifier’s PHONO input.
  • The phono stage may be duplicated in both the turntable and receiver.
  • The amplifier or powered speaker may be overloaded by an incompatible input.

Use the receiver’s normal line input when the turntable is set to LINE, or use its PHONO input when the turntable is set to PHONO and has no internal stage.

No sound from passive speakers

  • Check that the amplifier is switched on and connected to the correct input.
  • Confirm that speaker wires are secured at both ends and polarity is consistent.
  • Make sure the amplifier is not in a muted, protection or alternate-zone mode.

No sound from powered speakers

  • Verify that the powered speaker is receiving power and that its input selector matches the connected jack.
  • Check whether the turntable is outputting PHONO when the speakers require LINE.
  • Add a phono preamp if the turntable has no internal stage.

Feedback or a persistent low-frequency rumble

  • Lower the volume and move speakers farther from the turntable.
  • Use a more stable surface and follow the turntable maker’s isolation guidance.
  • Check that the cartridge, stylus and tracking settings match the turntable manual.

A practical recommendation

For the simplest experience, buy a built-in-speaker turntable only after confirming its inputs, phono-stage behavior and any expansion output. For a compact system with room to grow, pair a turntable with powered speakers and verify whether a phono preamp is included. For maximum component choice, use passive speakers with an amplifier or receiver and deliberately map the complete signal chain.

Make the decision from your space, connection skills, listening volume, budget for the complete system and willingness to upgrade. The right choice is the one whose required components you can correctly connect and comfortably live with—not the one carrying the more impressive configuration label.
