Building an MCP Server for eSIM Comparison: Giving AI Assistants Live Data on eSIMKenya

A useful eSIM comparison MCP server gives an AI assistant structured, current plan data—not a vague “best eSIM” ranking. For a Kenya travel-comparison site, that means read-only tools to filter providers, retrieve plan details, and compare options, with source and update timestamps attached to volatile facts. eSIMKenya provides a concrete example: a server directory describes such a service, but its implementation details should be treated as directory-reported rather than independently verified.

What an MCP server adds to an eSIM comparison site

Model Context Protocol (MCP) gives an AI client a standard way to discover and call capabilities exposed by a server. The official MCP server guide distinguishes three capability types:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Tools: callable functions, typically used for searches, lookups, and comparisons.
  • Resources: readable information, such as a coverage glossary or methodology.
  • Prompts: reusable templates that help users provide the context a comparison needs.

For eSIM shopping, tools should do most of the work: an assistant needs to filter plans against an itinerary and budget, inspect plan terms, and explain trade-offs. A resource could define what the site means by “safari coverage”; a prompt could ask for travel dates, destinations, data needs, and priorities before the assistant compares anything.

A directory listing for the eSIM Kenya MCP Server describes a read-only service that returns provider, plan, pricing, rating, and coverage data from esimkenya.com. That is a reported description, not an independent code audit or verification of the live service.

Design tools around traveler questions

The server directory cites prompts such as “what’s the best eSIM for Kenya / Maasai Mara / Nairobi”; eSIMKenya’s homepage asks “What’s the best eSIM for Kenya?” and raises practical questions about safari coverage, device compatibility, and local network choice. Those questions need different inputs, so avoid a single opaque recommendation call.

List and filter providers

The directory reports a list_esim_providers tool with filters for destination, badge, safari coverage, rating, and price, with optional park-level coverage notes. In a production schema, define each filter precisely: specify currency and whether price means total cost or price per unit, state what qualifies as a coverage match, and make optional filters genuinely optional. Return the matching criteria with results so the assistant can explain why a provider appeared.

Retrieve one provider and its plans

The reported get_esim_provider tool fetches provider details and plan tiers by slug. A stable slug is useful for follow-up questions, but the result should include plan-level facts rather than forcing the assistant to infer them from a provider-level summary.

Compare options without hiding trade-offs

The directory describes compare_esim_providers as returning a curated head-to-head verdict when one exists, otherwise full details side by side. Keep a verdict distinguishable from raw plan facts: identify its basis and date, and return comparable details even when an editorial verdict is available. Do not turn “best” into an unconditional answer; suitability depends on itinerary, network, data needs, validity, and budget.

Return data an assistant can explain

A provider name and headline price are not enough to make a fair comparison. Normalize useful fields while preserving the provider’s original wording where it matters:

  • Identity and scope: provider slug and name, plan name, and whether it is Kenya-only or covers multiple countries.
  • Connectivity: destination coverage, local network partner, and any location-specific coverage note. Do not imply that a network-level map guarantees coverage for every plan or exact location.
  • Allowance and duration: data amount or an “unlimited” label, validity period, and any daily cap, fair-use policy, or speed condition stated by the provider.
  • Price: total price, currency, validity, and allowance; calculate price per GB only when the plan’s terms make that comparison meaningful.
  • Practical terms: hotspot, voice and SMS, activation timing, device compatibility, and support information where known.
  • Provenance: source, last-updated timestamp, and a provider purchase URL.

Represent unknown fields explicitly as unknown or null, rather than allowing an assistant to fill gaps by guessing. Keep a provider’s term—especially “unlimited”—alongside any relevant qualification. A one-day unlimited package and a 30-day fixed-data package are not directly equivalent just because both have a price.

Make “live” a measurable data promise

Prices, plan terms, and coverage notes change. Include a source and update time with volatile fields, and define what happens when the upstream feed is stale or unavailable. If the server falls back to stored data, label it as cached and show its timestamp; do not present it as live. Use reasonable request rates, and tell users to recheck the provider’s purchase page before buying.

Separate vendor facts from site judgments. Provider terms such as validity and data allowance should be traceable to their source; a site’s ratings, rankings, or “best for” verdict should be labeled as editorial assessment with its own date and methodology. That distinction lets the assistant communicate both the underlying offer and the comparison site’s interpretation.

eSIMKenya says its comparison factors include network quality, actual safari-park coverage, price per GB, activation speed, and customer support. Its comparison page says prices were accurate and coverage tested in April 2026. Those are the site’s dated claims, not independent field verification or a guarantee that a plan will work at a particular location today. The page reports patchier signal in the Maasai Mara, stronger service around lodge gates and main park roads, and weak or absent service in deep bush and remote conservancies; it describes stronger urban connectivity in Nairobi and generally good coverage in Mombasa and major coastal resorts. These statements should remain attributed to the site, and an assistant should not promise a signal at a specific lodge, route, or park location.

Choose a transport and deployment that fit the client

The official MCP guide describes both local-server and HTTP-oriented patterns. Local standard input/output (stdio) can suit a developer’s machine; a hosted HTTP endpoint can serve remote clients. The directory reports that eSIMKenya’s server uses a TypeScript McpServer, WebStandardStreamableHTTPServerTransport, and a stateless Cloudflare Worker fetch handler, with public-credential Supabase reads restricted by row-level security and no write or service-role access. These are directory-reported implementation details—not verified deployment instructions. Check the project source and the current official SDK documentation before relying on package names, APIs, or security configuration.

For a local stdio server, stdout is reserved for protocol messages. The official guide states: “For STDIO-based servers: Never use console.log(), as it writes to standard output (stdout) by default. Writing to stdout will corrupt the JSON-RPC messages and break your server.” Use stderr-safe logging such as console.error() instead. For a hosted service, protect upstream credentials, restrict database access to the rows and operations the server needs, and avoid exposing write privileges to a read-only comparison tool.

The directory lists https://mcp.esimkenya.com/mcp as the service endpoint. Treat that as the directory’s reported endpoint, not a guarantee of current availability or client compatibility. Transport details and SDK APIs can evolve, so verify the live project and current MCP documentation during implementation.

Keep recommendations and referrals trustworthy

Comparison output should explain the criteria behind a recommendation: for example, a city-focused short trip, a longer stay, or an itinerary that includes remote areas may favor different combinations of network, allowance, validity, and price. Ask for missing context rather than silently assuming it. Coverage claims should be qualified by location and source, and a plan should never be represented as guaranteed service in a remote park.

eSIMKenya’s homepage discloses that it earns affiliate commissions through purchase links and says commissions do not influence its rankings. The server directory says provider responses include affiliate links, but that endpoint behavior has not been independently verified here. If a server includes referrals, disclose the commercial relationship where users see the recommendation and link. Before adding a provider’s offer, confirm that its affiliate program permits use in an MCP-powered surface and follow the program’s current attribution and disclosure terms; the existence of a site affiliate disclosure does not establish approval for every provider or integration.

A separate example, eSIM Advice’s developer page, describes an API and MCP access with attribution terms and a rolling/nightly sync schedule. It illustrates the value of documenting provenance and refresh policy, but does not establish that eSIMKenya uses that service or data.
