An AI keyboard for iOS is a custom keyboard app extension—not an unrestricted replacement for Apple’s system keyboard. Its design has to account for user-enabled Full Access before networking, sensitive keystrokes, contexts where iOS or the host app blocks third-party keyboards, and a separate process with a device-dependent memory limit. If the AI feature belongs in just one app, an app-owned input view may be a better fit.
Choose an extension only if the keyboard needs to work across apps
A custom keyboard extension can provide a third-party keyboard in text fields that support custom keyboards, once the user enables it in Settings. It communicates with the active text object through keyboard APIs. Apple’s custom keyboard guide describes the extension approach; its virtual-keyboard guidance also distinguishes systemwide keyboards from app-specific input interfaces.

If assistance is only needed in your own app, consider an app-owned UIInputView instead. That keeps the custom interface within the app’s text-entry experience rather than asking users to install and enable a third-party keyboard for use elsewhere.

By default, a custom keyboard’s sandbox blocks network access and writing to the containing app’s shared group container. For capabilities such as networking, the extension must request open access using RequestsOpenAccess; the user must also turn on Allow Full Access in Settings. Setting the key in the extension’s property list does not itself grant access. See Apple’s open-access configuration guide and the RequestsOpenAccess reference.

- Can't Connect the Bluetooth? Please reset the keyboard and then reconnect the Bluetooth: 1. Turn on the keyboarad; 2. Press and hold the first and the last key at the top row of the keyboard until all indicators start flashing; 3. Bluetooth light flickers quickly, auto entering Bluetooth pairing mode (If not, press Fn + 1 or 2); 4. Search and find "Wireless keyboard".
- Multi-OS Compatible: The keyboard is widely compatible with Android, Windows and iOS devices. Also the basic typing function works with other OS devices such as fire tablets.
- Connect 2 Devices: Seamless switching between 2 Bluetooth devices (iOS/Android/Windows) with single-tap transitions (Fn+"1"/ "2").
- Orange Keys for Productivity Boost: The color-coded design help you to position the keys effortlessly and reduce mistyping. The orange keys are more visible than standard keys, engineered for speed typists.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: Only 6oz weight and slim 0.6in profile fits in most handbags. The flexible hinge allows you to fold it up for travel – perfect for coffee shops, flights, or campus life.
Apple explains the default boundary plainly: “If you build a keyboard without open access, the system ensures that keystrokes can’t be sent back to your server or anywhere else.” That changes when the user enables open access: Apple says keystrokes are available to the keyboard developer. A networked AI feature therefore needs a clear explanation of what text it sends and why, secure transmission, and use of received keystroke or voice data only as needed for the explained text-input service—not retention beyond that need. These are platform expectations, not a substitute for a privacy policy or other applicable requirements.
Choose local or server inference around the platform constraints
Apple’s documentation establishes the access and process boundaries, but does not establish model quality, latency, or cost for either approach. Those depend on the implementation and cannot be inferred from the keyboard APIs.
Rank #2
| Approach | Platform implications | Trade-off to plan for |
|---|---|---|
| Local inference | Entered text need not be sent to a server, but the keyboard extension and its model resources run in a separate, device-limited process. Apple does not specify one memory allowance for all devices. | Model size and runtime must fit the available resources on supported devices; test across device models and under memory pressure. |
| Server-side inference | Networking requires the extension to request open access and the user to enable Allow Full Access. With open access, typed input is available to the keyboard developer. | Explain the data flow, transmit securely, limit use and retention to what the feature requires, and make the benefit clear enough for users to choose Full Access. |
| App-only assistance | An app-owned UIInputView can serve the app’s own text fields without building a keyboard intended for use across apps. |
Appropriate when the feature does not need to appear in other apps; it is not a systemwide keyboard. |
Plan for fields and apps where your keyboard will not appear
Third-party keyboards are not available in every text-entry context. iOS uses the system keyboard for secure text fields and phone-number fields, and an app can reject custom keyboards. Apple documents these limitations in its virtual-keyboard guidance and custom keyboard interface documentation.

Design the AI feature as an enhancement, not as the only way to enter or edit text. Users need a usable fallback when the extension is unavailable, when a host app disallows it, or when a field requires Apple’s keyboard.

Budget for the extension’s separate process and memory limit
A keyboard extension runs in its own process, with a memory limit that varies by device. Exceeding that limit can terminate the extension. Apple also notes that a process may remain alive after the keyboard is dismissed, so hiding the keyboard does not guarantee its memory is released. The custom keyboard guide recommends testing across devices and handling memory pressure.
- Test on multiple device models rather than assuming one memory budget applies everywhere.
- Exercise the keyboard under memory pressure and make its behavior resilient if the extension is terminated.
- Avoid treating dismissal as a signal that the process or its resources have been released.
Recreate expected keyboard behavior—and verify older guidance
Apple’s current custom keyboard guide identifies familiar interactions such as autocorrection, autocapitalization, and smart quotes. Users may expect these even when the keyboard’s main selling point is AI assistance, so decide deliberately which behaviors your keyboard supports.

Apple’s archived Custom Keyboard programming guide explicitly requires a next-keyboard key and says custom keyboards cannot use the microphone, select text, or place inline autocorrection controls by the insertion point. Because this is archived guidance, check the target iOS SDK and devices before treating those details as current behavior. The archived guide is useful context, not a substitute for validating the actual experience you ship.
