A Turkish e-signature expiry monitor should read the token’s public X.509 certificate, alert on its actual notAfter date, and report revocation status separately. An expiry countdown alone does not establish that a certificate is usable: it may already be revoked, or its status check may be unavailable or stale.
What the monitor needs to check
A Turkish qualified electronic certificate identifies its holder and provider, carries a serial number, and states its validity period. BTK, Türkiye’s Information and Communication Technologies Authority, says every electronic certificate has a specified start and end time; it also says validity generally ranges from one to three years. Those are general descriptions, not a substitute for the dates on a particular certificate. Read the certificate itself. BTK’s e-signature FAQ

In X.509, notBefore and notAfter define the validity interval. RFC 5280 treats the interval as inclusive and requires applications to process both UTCTime and GeneralizedTime encodings. Calculate the countdown against a UTC clock and retain the parsed timestamps, not just a rounded number of days. RFC 5280

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Expiry and revocation answer different questions. The first indicates whether the certificate is within its stated time interval; the second concerns whether the issuer has withdrawn it. BTK advises relying parties to check qualification, validity, revocation, and restrictions on certificate use. The monitor should therefore expose separate expiry and status results rather than collapsing them into a single “valid” label. BTK’s e-signature FAQ

Design the certificate inventory
Use identifiers that remain useful when a holder’s name or a display label changes. Store the provider, issuer, serial number, subject or holder reference, certificate validity timestamps, and the source from which the certificate was read. BTK identifies provider, holder, validity period, and serial number as certificate contents; the issuer and serial together also make a practical lookup key for status checks.
- Provider and issuer: retain enough information to select the correct provider-specific status mechanism.
- Serial number: record it exactly as encoded or represented by the certificate library used by the monitor.
- Holder reference: use only what is necessary to distinguish certificates operationally.
- Validity interval: preserve parsed UTC start and end times, including timezone handling.
- Read provenance: note whether the certificate was obtained from a token, provider workflow, or imported public certificate, and when it was last read.
A holder’s display name alone is insufficient: certificates can be renewed or replaced, so an inventory needs to distinguish the old serial from the new one.

Read the public certificate without exposing signing keys
The monitor needs public certificate metadata, not the private key used to sign. Do not export, request, or store private signing keys for an expiry-monitoring feature. Depending on deployment, an operator may import an already available certificate or read it from a compatible physical token and card reader.
Do not assume that one token-reading method works across all Turkish providers, devices, operating systems, or middleware. Confirm the certificate-reading path against the exact provider and token combination in the target environment. The TURKTRUST certificate profile is one provider-specific example, not evidence of a universal Turkish token interface. TURKTRUST profile

Parse expiry dates and trigger useful alerts
- Obtain the certificate: use the validated provider/token integration or import a public certificate through an approved workflow.
- Parse X.509 fields: read
notBeforeandnotAfter, supporting both UTCTime and GeneralizedTime as required by RFC 5280. - Check the current time: compare both endpoints with a synchronized UTC clock. A certificate is not yet within its interval before
notBefore, and it is past expiry afternotAfter. - Compute remaining time: calculate from the exact
notAftertimestamp, then display a human-friendly countdown without discarding the underlying timestamp. - Configure lead times: let the operator choose reminder thresholds appropriate to renewal procedures and delivery channels. The sources establish no universal alert schedule, so do not hard-code one as a regulatory requirement.
- Notify accountable people: send reminders to both the certificate holder and the operational owner, and include the provider, serial or internal certificate reference, expiry timestamp, and next action.
Test boundary behavior around the actual timestamp, including timezone conversions and daylight-saving changes in the display layer. Store comparisons in UTC so a local clock or timezone presentation cannot silently shift an alert.
Track revocation separately from expiry
Turkish electronic certificate service providers maintain certificate-status information and prepare certificate revocation lists (CRLs). BTK also publishes provider activity information. A monitor should identify which provider and status source it relies on, record the time of the last successful check, and make stale or failed checks visible. BTK Turkish FAQ BTK provider list

Where the certificate or provider supplies an OCSP responder location, the deployment may query it if permitted and operationally appropriate. OCSP provides a way to check status without requiring CRLs, or as a supplement to them. Preserve the protocol result as well as the time and freshness information; a network or responder failure is not a positive status. RFC 6960

In the user interface, distinguish at least these states: not yet valid, expired, unexpired with a current non-revoked status response, revoked, unknown, status service unavailable, and status data stale. Avoid a green “valid” indicator when the revocation query failed or when the certificate dates were not successfully parsed.

Make provider and token support explicit
Provider and device compatibility is an integration question, not a property guaranteed by X.509. Start with BTK’s provider list and legislation index, then confirm current provider documentation, certificate-reading behavior, and status endpoints for each supported service and token. Provider listings and endpoints can change, so verify them during implementation and operations.
- Test certificate retrieval with the actual token, reader, middleware, and supported operating system.
- Check whether the deployment can access the provider’s OCSP or CRL service, including any network restrictions.
- Confirm how renewal or replacement certificates enter the inventory so alerts do not continue against obsolete serial numbers.
- Document which checks are automated and which require a holder or administrator action.
BTK’s general information page says Law No. 5070 on Electronic Signature entered into force on 23 July 2004; this establishes the Turkish legal context, but does not specify a universal token interface. BTK electronic-signature information
Operational safeguards and failure handling
- Certificate cannot be read: report an integration or access error; do not infer expiry or validity from an earlier, unrelated certificate.
- Date parse fails: mark expiry as unknown and surface the parser error for investigation rather than suppressing the alert.
- Status query fails: retain the last successful result with its timestamp, label the current status unavailable or stale, and retry according to the operator’s policy.
- Provider or token changes: revalidate the integration and status source before treating newly read certificates as monitored.
- Renewal completed: register the new certificate as a distinct inventory record and retire the old record according to the organization’s retention policy.
A monitor is an alerting and visibility tool, not proof that a signature will be accepted for every purpose. Certificate qualification, usage restrictions, validity, revocation, and relying-party requirements remain relevant to a particular signing transaction.
