Building a Messenger With No Phone Number: How Z-TEXT Uses zk-SNARKs on the BitcoinZ Blockchain

Z-TEXT is a messenger that replaces the phone number with a wallet seed. It sends each message as an encrypted memo inside a BitcoinZ shielded transaction. This article explains that design as the project describes it, separates the layers that people often blur together, and sets out the trade-offs. Almost everything about security, speed and cost comes from Z-TEXT’s own site, documentation and an affiliated article. We found no independent audit or outside operational test, so those claims are attributed to the project throughout.

The short version

  • Identity: a wallet seed generates a shielded address. No phone number or email is needed.
  • Content: the app encrypts the message locally before it leaves the device.
  • Transport: the ciphertext goes into the memo field of a BitcoinZ shielded transaction, which zk-SNARK proofs are meant to make opaque to outside observers.
  • Trade-offs: messages are text-only, they persist on a public chain, the network is a dependency, and no independent audit was found.

How the message path works

Z-TEXT’s official documentation and product site describe the following sequence:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  1. Create an identity. The app derives a shielded address from a wallet seed.
  2. Exchange keys with a contact. The product site specifies X25519 for contact key exchange.
  3. Encrypt locally. Message content is encrypted with AES-256-GCM on the device.
  4. Embed the ciphertext. The encrypted payload goes into the memo of a Sapling-family BitcoinZ shielded transaction.
  5. Broadcast. The transaction is sent to the BitcoinZ network.
  6. Decrypt. The recipient’s app finds the transaction, reads the memo and decrypts it with the shared key.

The documentation also describes a “G-stream” push mechanism for delivering memos. The app is described as cross-platform, with a Rust core and a Flutter interface. Android, Windows, macOS and Linux are listed as available. iOS is listed as “coming soon”.

Two layers that do different jobs

The project describes two separate protections, and it helps to keep them apart.

#1 Best Overall
Bitkey Bitcoin Hardware Wallet, No Screen - Self-Custody, No Seed Phrase
  • BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
  • SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
  • NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
  • 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
  • BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Layer Mechanism (as described by Z-TEXT) What it is meant to protect
Message content AES-256-GCM, with X25519 key exchange between contacts The text of the message
Transaction metadata Sapling-style shielded transactions using zk-SNARK proofs Sender, receiver and amount on the public ledger

A zk-SNARK is a proof that a transaction is valid without revealing the details. Here that means the chain can verify a payment without publishing who sent it, who received it or how much moved. The proof does nothing for the message text. That job belongs to the separate encryption step. Neither layer, as far as the project describes it, hides the network connection of the device that submits the transaction. That is a third question, covered below.

Identity without a phone number

Most mainstream messengers use a phone number or email for sign-up and contact discovery. Z-TEXT instead treats the wallet seed as the account. The affiliated article uses the heading “Identity: a seed, not a phone number” for this idea.

There are practical consequences, even though the project’s pages do not spell them out:

  • No carrier or registry links the account to a SIM, so there is nothing for a number-based lookup to find.
  • Contacts must exchange addresses and keys directly, because there is no address-book matching.
  • Control of the seed is control of the identity. Anyone who obtains it can act as you, and losing it presumably means losing the account. Treat it like any wallet seed.

Who can see your connection: the three tiers

The app has to talk to the BitcoinZ network somehow. The vendor describes three options with different trust assumptions:

Option Vendor’s stated effect
Default official lightwallet service Simplest setup. You rely on the service operator, who can see your connecting IP address.
Official service over Tor The vendor says the operator cannot see your IP address.
Self-hosted lightwallet service or full BitcoinZ node The vendor says this removes the third party from the connection.

Read these as the product’s trust model, not as guarantees. Tor hides your address from the service operator. It does not make you invisible to every observer, and it does nothing about a compromised device. Self-hosting removes one intermediary. Endpoint security, your own server’s exposure and the public nature of the chain remain.

Speed and cost claims

Claim Source and date Caveat
Typical delivery of 1–5 seconds, before block settlement Z-TEXT official site, accessed October 5, 2026 Vendor claim, not a measured latency. It refers to delivery ahead of confirmation.
About $0.00003 per on-chain message Z-TEXT official site, accessed October 5, 2026 Depends on the BTCZ fee and price assumptions at the time.
0.0002 BTCZ described as a message cost Z-TEXT-affiliated article, September 29, 2026 Different denomination, and the assumptions may differ from the site’s figure.

The two cost figures are framed differently, and we have not tried to reconcile them. Fees on a blockchain can change with the coin’s price and network rules, so treat any quoted number as a snapshot, not a stable price.

Limits and trade-offs

Text only

The affiliated article from September 29, 2026 reports text-only messaging. It says there are no files, pictures or video. If you need to share media, this design as described does not cover it.

Permanence on a public chain

Messages ride on a blockchain, so they persist there. The same article frames this as both a feature and a responsibility. An encrypted memo can’t be recalled. Its safety then rests on the strength of the encryption and on the secrecy of your keys, for as long as the chain exists.

Dependence on BitcoinZ

Because each message is a BitcoinZ transaction, the messenger depends on that network being live, funded with fees, and supported by the infrastructure above. Claims such as censorship resistance follow from the design’s intent but have not been independently tested, so we don’t state them as fact.

No independent audit found

The affiliated article itself says the application had no independent audit as of September 29, 2026. We found no external audit report or operational test. Claims of “zero metadata” or strong anonymity are therefore the project’s, not established facts.

The post-quantum claim

The same article says a hybrid key exchange, X25519 combined with ML-KEM-768, has been live since version 3.7.0. It also says signatures remain classical Ed25519. The product site’s feature list names X25519 alone, so the two project sources describe the key exchange differently. We found no independent verification of the implementation. In a hybrid scheme, an attacker would need to break both components to recover the key. That is a general property of such designs, not a result established for this app. The classical signatures mean authentication does not get the same quantum-era protection.

Don’t confuse it with Project Vertex

A BitcoinZ community page called Project Vertex describes a “sovereign communication protocol” with a broad feature blueprint. It reads as a separate proposal. Nothing we found shows that it is the same product as Z-TEXT or that its listed features are built, so don’t attribute its feature list to Z-TEXT.

How it compares with other messengers

When you weigh this design against Signal, Matrix, Session or similar apps, compare on these axes rather than on slogans:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

  • Identity and contact discovery: seed-derived address with manual key exchange, versus phone number or account ID.
  • Metadata exposure: what the ledger shows, what the infrastructure operator sees, and what your network path reveals.
  • Storage permanence: public-chain persistence versus server-side deletion or ephemeral relays.
  • Infrastructure trust: default service, Tor, or self-hosted node.
  • Platforms and media: four desktop and mobile platforms today, text only.
  • Independent security evidence: none found for Z-TEXT, as of the dates cited.

Verdict

The architecture is coherent on paper. A seed gives you identity, local encryption protects the content, and shielded transactions carry the ciphertext and aim to hide transaction details. It is a credible way to build a messenger without a phone number. But the strongest claims, including speed, low fees, metadata privacy and post-quantum key exchange, come from the project and its affiliates. For anything sensitive, weigh the lack of an independent audit, the permanence of on-chain data and the connection tier you choose before relying on it.
