You can build a football scores and standings app with Nuxt 3 by putting provider requests behind Nuxt server routes, rendering the initial data with useFetch, and refreshing selectively within the football data provider’s rate limits. Treat “real-time” as periodically refreshed unless your provider explicitly documents a push feed. One important version caveat: as of October 5, 2026, Nuxt’s lifecycle documentation says Nuxt 3 reached end of life on July 31, 2026. Use Nuxt 3 only when you specifically need it or have support arrangements; for a new production app, assess a supported Nuxt version first.
Choose the competitions and data your app will show
Before building the screens, decide which competitions, seasons and match filters you need. football-data.org’s v4 API documents competition match resources with date, season, matchday and status filters, as well as a standings resource. Keep the first version focused: for example, one competition’s fixtures and standings, with controls for matchday and season.

Model match status explicitly. The provider documents SCHEDULED, LIVE, IN_PLAY, PAUSED, FINISHED, POSTPONED, SUSPENDED and CANCELLED. These values carry different information: a paused match is not the same as a scheduled fixture, and a postponed match should not look like an ordinary upcoming game.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Also account for null or unavailable values. A pre-match score may be unknown, and not every competition has league standings. The provider describes total, home and away tables for league competitions, potentially multiple tables for league cups, and no standings for some cup or playoff formats. Design the page around the selected competition’s actual format rather than assuming there is always one table.

Keep the provider token on the Nuxt server
Nuxt automatically registers handlers placed in server/api/; those files are exposed under the /api prefix. A server route can authenticate with the provider, validate query parameters, normalize its response and apply caching without exposing the token in browser JavaScript. This is an application architecture choice based on Nuxt’s server routes and football-data.org’s authenticated X-Auth-Token request header.
Configure private runtime values
Keep credentials in environment configuration, not a client-visible runtime config section or a committed source file. For example, define private runtime config keys and set them in the deployment environment:
export default defineNuxtConfig({
runtimeConfig: {
footballApiBase: '',
footballApiToken: ''
}
})
Set the deployment environment variables NUXT_FOOTBALL_API_BASE and NUXT_FOOTBALL_API_TOKEN to the provider’s documented API base and your token. Do not prefix private credentials with NUXT_PUBLIC_; public runtime config is intended for values that can be sent to the browser.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCreate a match proxy route
This route accepts a competition identifier and optional documented filters, then requests the provider’s competition-matches resource. The API base is supplied through runtime config so the secret and provider access remain server-side.

// server/api/matches.get.ts
export default defineEventHandler(async (event) => {
const config = useRuntimeConfig(event)
const query = getQuery(event)
const competition = String(query.competition ?? '')
if (!competition) {
throw createError({ statusCode: 400, statusMessage: 'competition is required' })
}
const allowed = ['season', 'matchday', 'dateFrom', 'dateTo', 'status']
const params = Object.fromEntries(
allowed
.filter((key) => query[key] !== undefined)
.map((key) => [key, String(query[key])])
)
return await $fetch(
`${config.footballApiBase}/competitions/${encodeURIComponent(competition)}/matches`,
{
headers: { 'X-Auth-Token': config.footballApiToken },
query: params
}
)
})
Validate filter values against the provider’s accepted formats in a production app, and avoid passing arbitrary query keys through to the provider. Preserve useful provider identifiers and match fields—competition and season, kickoff, team names, score values and status—in the application response. Keep nullable score values nullable rather than converting them to zero or an empty string.
Expose standings through a separate route
Give standings their own endpoint so the page can load or refresh them independently of the match list. Use the provider’s competition standings resource and pass only the season or other filters that resource supports.
// server/api/standings.get.ts
export default defineEventHandler(async (event) => {
const config = useRuntimeConfig(event)
const query = getQuery(event)
const competition = String(query.competition ?? '')
if (!competition) {
throw createError({ statusCode: 400, statusMessage: 'competition is required' })
}
const season = query.season === undefined
? undefined
: String(query.season)
return await $fetch(
`${config.footballApiBase}/competitions/${encodeURIComponent(competition)}/standings`,
{
headers: { 'X-Auth-Token': config.footballApiToken },
query: season ? { season } : undefined
}
)
})
In a production implementation, add consistent error handling around provider failures. Preserve meaningful upstream status information for your logs, but return a safe, predictable error shape to the browser. A missing standings resource for a cup is a format limitation to handle in the interface, not a reason to render an empty league table.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Render initial data without duplicating the request
Use Nuxt’s SSR-aware useFetch in page setup for data needed on first render. Nuxt’s data-fetching documentation explains that useFetch transfers server-fetched data to the client during hydration; calling plain $fetch in setup can instead make the same request once during server rendering and again in the browser.

<script setup lang="ts">
const competitionId = ref('COMPETITION_ID')
const matchday = ref<number | undefined>()
const { data, pending, error, refresh } = await useFetch('/api/matches', {
query: { competition: competitionId, matchday }
})
let timer: ReturnType<typeof setInterval> | undefined
onMounted(() => {
timer = setInterval(() => {
refresh()
}, refreshIntervalMs)
})
onBeforeUnmount(() => {
if (timer) clearInterval(timer)
})
</script>
Replace COMPETITION_ID and refreshIntervalMs with values supplied by your application’s configuration and refresh policy. Use $fetch for interaction-triggered actions that are not part of page setup, such as a button that explicitly reloads data. Reactive query values can drive the selected competition or matchday; make sure the refresh policy also responds sensibly when those selections change.
Refresh scores within the provider’s request budget
football-data.org publishes different limits by access level. Its policy states that unauthenticated clients have 100 requests per 24 hours and are restricted to area and competition listings; registered clients receive 10 requests per minute on the free plan, 30 per minute on Standard, and 60 per minute on plans above Standard. These are provider-published limits; confirm your current plan and competition access before setting a production refresh target.
Count requests across all active users and server instances, not just one browser tab. If every visitor independently polls both matches and standings, traffic can multiply quickly. Practical ways to reduce duplicate work include:
Recommended Free Tools
- Request a competition’s match list rather than requesting each fixture separately.
- Refresh standings less often than active match scores when the product does not need them at the same cadence.
- Share server-side cached results across clients where your deployment and freshness requirements permit.
- Slow or stop score polling when there are no relevant matches in progress, and avoid overlapping refreshes when a request is still pending.
There is no provider push or streaming guarantee established here, so polling should not be presented as instantaneous delivery. Choose an interval only after accounting for the plan limit, number of competitions, number of endpoints and the provider’s current terms. If the app needs a specific update delay, verify that the chosen data source and plan can support it.

Show match states and data freshness honestly
A useful score row makes the match state visible alongside the score. For example, show “Scheduled” for SCHEDULED, “Half-time” or “Paused” for PAUSED when the provider’s details support that label, and “Full time” for FINISHED. For postponed, suspended and cancelled matches, use direct labels instead of leaving a blank score that looks like a loading problem.
Represent loading, stale, unavailable and current data as distinct interface states. Display a last-updated time based on when your app successfully received the response. Do not fabricate a minute-by-minute clock from kickoff time, or label a fixture live unless the provider’s status confirms it. When a score is null, show a pending or unavailable value appropriate to the match state rather than treating null as 0–0.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Render standings according to competition format
Use the standings response’s actual table structure and retain its returned fields, such as position, team, played, won, drawn, lost, goals and points when present. Label the context for each table: total, home, away or group. A competition with multiple groups needs a heading for each group; it should not be flattened into one invented ranking.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For cups or playoffs without standings, show an appropriate fixture, results or bracket view if your data source supports one. Do not interpret a missing standings result as an empty table. Historical tables also need care: football-data.org says it supplies official standings for running seasons, but deducted points may be removed from past seasons. If your product must preserve the table as it appeared on a specific date, store dated snapshots yourself.

Deploy the server layer with a suitable cache policy
Nuxt uses Nitro for server routes and supports multiple deployment presets, including Cloudflare Workers, Netlify Functions and Vercel Cloud. Choose a runtime based on your hosting requirements, request patterns and cache controls; the Nuxt deployment documentation does not establish that one target is universally faster or cheaper.
Stable content and live data need different cache treatment. Prerender pages or cache relatively stable content where appropriate, but set API route caching to match the freshness you can promise. A shared cache can conserve provider requests, while a long time-to-live can make scores stale; account for that trade-off explicitly. Check the selected platform’s behavior for server execution, cache headers and request limits before launch.
Decide whether Nuxt 3 is still the right starting point
Nuxt’s official lifecycle page identifies Nuxt 3.21.11 and states, “Nuxt 3 reached end of life on 31 July 2026.” It says Nuxt 3 no longer receives bug fixes or security patches unless extended support is obtained. If you are maintaining a Nuxt 3 app, assess your support and upgrade plan. If you are starting a new production app, compare the effort of following this Nuxt 3-specific architecture with starting on a currently supported Nuxt release.
