A useful F1–F12 tester reports two different things for every press: the key’s physical position, using KeyboardEvent.code, and the value delivered to the page, using KeyboardEvent.key. Test the row once without Fn and again with Fn held. If the page receives no event, that means only that it did not receive one in that browser and device configuration—not that the physical key is necessarily broken.
Why F1–F12 can behave differently from what their labels suggest
On some laptop and compact keyboards, the top row’s primary action is a media or system function, such as changing brightness. Holding Fn may request the F1–F12 interpretation instead. Other keyboards use the reverse arrangement, and some provide a mode or Fn Lock setting. There is no universal assignment: the W3C UI Events specification notes that “the primary functions assigned to these keys varies widely from one manufacturer to the next.”

Fn itself often is not sent to the browser as a key event. It is commonly handled inside the keyboard, so a web page cannot reliably tell whether Fn was physically pressed. The page can show what event, if any, arrived when you pressed Fn+F1, Fn+F2, and so on.

code: the physical key location/name reported by the browser. For the function section, these values are typicallyF1throughF12. Use this field to highlight the corresponding position in the tester.key: the value reported for that event. A function key may be reported asF1, for example, but the value can vary by platform and key behavior.- Event type and release: record both
keydownandkeyup. A press without a matching release can indicate that the page did not receive the full event sequence. - Location and modifiers: record
locationwhen provided, plusshiftKey,ctrlKey,altKey, andmetaKey. These help distinguish a plain press from a modified one.
Keep physical identity and interpreted value separate. If pressing the top-row position produces a media action before a page event is delivered, the tester may show nothing; if an event arrives with a different key, the log should preserve that value rather than relabeling it as the intended F-key.

A small browser tester for the function row
This standalone page creates all twelve positions, listens only while its test surface is focused, highlights a position by code, and logs the reported event details. The “Capture browser defaults” checkbox is off initially. Enabling it asks the page to prevent the browser’s default handling for events it receives while the test surface is focused; it cannot override shortcuts already consumed by the operating system or keyboard firmware.

Run separate passes instead of mixing results
- Focus the test surface and press F1 through F12 without holding Fn. Note the keyboard model, operating system, connection type, and current keyboard mode.
- Clear or otherwise distinguish the first pass, then hold Fn and test each F-key position again. The page may show the same F-key event, a different delivered value, or no event.
- If the keyboard has Fn Lock or a function/media mode, change it according to that model’s instructions and repeat both passes. Do not assume Fn+Esc is the toggle: that shortcut is device-specific.
- Compare the event log with what the key actually did. A brightness change with no browser event is evidence that the page did not receive a key event for that press; it does not identify the switch’s electrical condition.
How to interpret results without overclaiming
The physical code and key value agree
If a press reports code: F5 and key: F5, the page received an event identified as F5. This confirms event delivery to that page in that configuration; it is not a direct measurement of the switch or a guarantee that every application will receive the same event.

The key performs a system action and the page records nothing
The keyboard firmware, operating system, or browser may have handled the action before page JavaScript received an event. Check the keyboard’s mode or manual, then repeat in another application or browser. Do not diagnose a dead key from this result alone.
The page sees keydown but no keyup
First ensure the key was released while the test surface remained focused. If focus moved, the page may not receive the release. Repeat with a single press and check another browser or application if the mismatch persists.

A different key value appears
Keep the reported code and key together in the result. The former identifies the reported physical location; the latter is the event’s value. Do not silently convert one into the other or assume the media/function mapping is universal.
Why browser tests differ across operating systems and devices
A browser observes the result after keyboard firmware, operating-system input handling, and browser event delivery. On Windows, keyboard messages and scan-code/HID mapping are part of the path from device input to an application. Function-key value conventions also have platform-specific details; documentation of browser key values includes examples for Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android. Neither fact establishes one universal media-key mapping or one cross-platform Fn setting.

- 【High-Quality Tester】This USB cable tester is specifically designed to tackle cable clutter, enabling quick identification of various USB cable types. By observing the LED indicators on the test board, users can intuitively determine the number of wire cores and transmission performance.
- 【Extensive Compatibility】Equipped with nearly all mainstream USB interfaces—Type-C, USB-A 3.0, Micro-B 3.0, Micro-B 2.0, Mini-B 2.0, and Lightning cables—this USB cable tester can quickly detect cable status (normal/fault/open circuit/charge-only/data transmission function/high-speed data transmission, etc.).
- 【Efficient Detection】When dealing with piles of tangled cables, this USB-C tester allows you to swiftly distinguish between different USB-C cables. It is particularly suitable for electronics repair, device debugging, cable quality inspection, and similar scenarios.
- 【Dual Power Supply Methods】The USB tester offers flexible power options: it can be powered either by a CR2032 button cell battery or via a Type-C interface (Note: When using Type-C for power, a separate 5V power adapter is required).
- 【Compact Size】With its small form factor measuring just 7.3×5.7×1 cm, this USB tester is highly portable and can be carried anywhere. Please note: This device is intended solely for cable testing and must not be connected to end devices such as smartphones or computers.
Configuration may be specific to a device or even a keyboard profile. For example, the Dell Latitude 5455 manual documents Fn+Esc as a toggle between multimedia and function-key behavior. The HHKB Studio guide documents profile-dependent behavior across Windows and macOS. These are examples for those products, not general instructions for other keyboards. Consult the manual or firmware settings for the exact model.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Browser shortcuts and system shortcuts may be consumed before a page receives them. A focused test surface and optional default prevention can help with browser-level behavior, but cannot guarantee capture of every key. Leave capture off unless needed: intercepting a key can change ordinary browser behavior, and it still cannot bypass operating-system or firmware handling.
When to use a different diagnostic method
Use a second browser or application, then a second computer, to help isolate the layer where an event disappears. If the same key behaves differently across those tests, note the combinations rather than treating a browser result as a hardware verdict.
- Windows software diagnostics: PassMark KeyboardTest describes Windows scan-code and transition testing, including key-down/key-up display, custom layouts, and USB, wireless, and PS/2 keyboard support. Its listed version detail is KeyboardTest 4.0, Build 1003, dated 3 April 2024. This is a separate Windows diagnostic-software route, not a browser tester.
- Hardware bench testing: PCsensor’s KMtester manual describes connecting the keyboard under test to a USB tester module and then connecting the module to a computer. The module can show pressed/released state and count presses; the manual describes serial or HID-printing output modes. This approach is aimed at bench or production checks and is not necessary to build a browser page.
These methods have different scopes. A browser page reports events delivered to that page; software tools report what their supported operating-system interface exposes; a USB module tests through its own hardware and output path. Choose the one that answers the question you actually have.
