1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsYou can build an Apple-platform app that reads selected Apple Health data through HealthKit and runs a language model locally with MLX Swift. But local inference alone does not guarantee that health data stays on the device: permissions, storage, logs, model downloads, diagnostics, syncing, and external requests all affect the data path. This guide outlines a privacy-conscious architecture and the checks to make before presenting it as private.
What “on-device” does—and does not—mean
On-device inference means the model processes its input on the device rather than sending that input to a remote model service. It does not establish that the rest of the app is offline or that health information never leaves the device. A model may be downloaded; the app may sync summaries, send diagnostics, or retain prompts in logs. Review each flow separately.

For a meaningful privacy claim, map the full lifecycle of health data: what the app requests, what it reads, what it sends to the model, what it stores, and whether any data is transmitted, exported, backed up, or synchronized. Describe any external flow clearly rather than treating local inference as proof of end-to-end privacy.

Use MLX Swift for the Apple-platform app
MLX Swift is a Swift interface to MLX for Apple silicon. Its project documents Apple-platform examples, including iOS and macOS examples. The separate MLX Swift LM project provides language-model implementations and examples. Check both projects’ current setup instructions and the requirements for the specific model you intend to run.

Pin the library and identify the model precisely
The MLX Swift LM README documents a 3.x main branch and warns that the major-version change introduced breaking changes. Pin the dependency version used by your app, and re-check the project’s current package guidance before upgrading.
Record the exact model variant, size, quantization, and artifact source. Meta’s Llama 3 model card describes the original release, dated April 18, 2024, and its stated scope: English commercial and research use subject to the applicable license and acceptable-use policy. That description does not automatically apply to later Llama versions or converted artifacts; verify the terms for the exact model you ship.

Request only the HealthKit access the feature needs
HealthKit access is permission-based. Ask for only the data types needed for a clearly explained feature, and tell users why the app needs them in its interface and marketing. Apple’s HealthKit privacy guidance requires a clear health or fitness purpose, disclosure of how the app uses HealthKit data, and a privacy policy.
Recommended Free Tools
Apple also says HealthKit information may not be used for advertising or similar services, and may not be sold to data brokers or resellers. Disclosure to third parties is restricted, even where a user has given permission. Treat authorization as permission to access specified data for the app’s explained purpose—not as blanket permission to repurpose or share it.

Available resolutions depend on compatible monitors, cables, adapters, and the selected display configuration.
HealthKit’s authorization behavior also matters to interface design: Apple documents privacy protections for read authorization in its HealthKit authorization guidance. Do not assume that the app can infer a user’s full health history from an authorization prompt or that a missing result proves the user has no such data.
Keep the data path narrow and understandable
- Explain the feature before requesting access. State which HealthKit data types the feature uses and what it will produce, then request only the necessary permissions.
- Prepare the model input deliberately. Convert the selected readings into the smallest useful prompt or structured input. Avoid passing unrelated health history simply because it is available.
- Run inference locally when that is the design. Ensure the app’s model integration does not route prompts or results to a remote service. Be transparent if a feature falls back to a hosted model.
- Review persistence and observability. Decide whether prompts, generated summaries, or derived data are saved; limit retention to what the feature needs. Check logs, crash reports, analytics, and support exports for health information.
- Disclose every external transfer. Account for model downloads, diagnostics, telemetry, app-data sync, backups, and any remote requests. A local model does not make these flows disappear.
- Revisit the design when features change. New sharing, syncing, export, or model-service features can alter the privacy story and may require updated disclosures and review.
Apple documents local HealthKit storage and encryption while the device is locked, but those platform protections do not answer every question about app-generated prompts or summaries. Review the app’s own storage, backup, and network behavior as well as HealthKit access.

Check Llama 3’s license before distributing the app
Local execution does not remove model-license obligations. Read Meta’s Llama 3 Community License and acceptable-use policy for the exact model and distribution arrangement. The license includes attribution requirements in covered redistribution contexts and restrictions concerning sensitive information and professional practice. It prohibits using Llama 3 for the unauthorized or unlicensed practice of a profession, including medical or health practice.

A health-data summary or conversational interface can still create consequential expectations, even when the model runs entirely on a phone.
Best Value
Set performance expectations from measurements, not assumptions
MLX Swift establishes an Apple-silicon development context, but the cited project documentation does not establish which Mac configuration—or which iPhone, model size, quantization, memory footprint, or latency—will work well for a particular app. Test the exact model artifact on the target devices and record the conditions. Do not turn a framework’s platform support into a performance guarantee.
Likewise, “private” should describe a verified data flow, not imply a privacy audit or clinical validation. The cited project and platform materials do not establish medical accuracy, regulatory compliance, or a guarantee that a particular implementation never transmits data.
