What makes a photography portfolio website useful to clients?
A portfolio is doing more than displaying attractive images: it should help a potential client recognize that you do the kind of work they need and understand how to contact you.

- Show the work immediately. Put relevant images where visitors can see them without an unnecessary splash screen or a feed that conceals the portfolio.
- Organize around services or genres. Use labels prospective clients recognize, and put the main business first.
- Add context. Where relevant, identify clients, publications, collaborators, locations, or project subjects. This helps visitors understand the experience behind the images.
- Make contact straightforward. Provide a clear route for enquiries. If you handle different work, separate routes for commissions, licensing, prints, or other services can help visitors reach the right place.
- Keep personal work distinct when it serves a different purpose. It can show creative range without obscuring the services you most want to sell.
These are practical lessons drawn from the examples in Colorlib’s guide; they are not measured rules about conversion or business results.
28 photography portfolio websites and the ideas they illustrate
Rather than treating the examples as a single winner-to-last ranking, consider how each site’s presentation fits its work and business model. Colorlib says it retained 15 sites from its previous edition, tested 95 new candidates, and opened more than 300 inner pages. Those are the publisher’s reported methodology figures, not an independently audited evaluation.

When several services are part of the business, make each one discoverable without forcing every visitor through the same enquiry route.

Consumer-facing rates and commercial enquiries
- Cassandra Ladru: Colorlib reports that wedding coverage begins at $5,800, a rate stated by the photographer—not a market average.
- Alex Tran: Colorlib reports listed portrait-session fees of $350 for one hour and $450 for two hours, plus $25 per selected photo. These are the photographer’s stated rates, not a general pricing benchmark.
These examples show two ways to qualify a lead: communicate a starting price for a defined service, or collect project information before preparing a commercial quote.

How many photos should be in a photography portfolio?
There is no universal ideal count established by the examples. Include enough work to demonstrate the range and consistency of the assignments you want, then remove images you would not want to shoot again. A small number of clearly named sections can be more useful than a large, undifferentiated archive. The test is whether each image strengthens the case for the work you want to do.

How should I organize a portfolio with several genres?
- Choose the work you most want to book. Put that service or genre first.
- Create a clearly named gallery for each distinct offering. Prefer familiar client-facing terms over private project labels.
- Separate personal projects if they serve a different audience or purpose. Keep them available without letting them compete with the main business.
- Give projects context. Add client, publication, collaborator, location, or subject details when they help explain the work.
What is the best platform for a photography portfolio?
No universal platform winner is established by these examples. Colorlib identifies portfolios built with Squarespace, WordPress, Format, Cargo, SmugMug, Pixieset, Showit, Adobe Portfolio, liveBooks, and custom code, but its guide is not a controlled feature, price, or performance benchmark.

Colorlib’s rationale for a dedicated website is that it gives photographers more control over how work is organized around desired assignments, where client context appears, whether rates or licensing terms are published, and how enquiries are routed. Instagram can be part of a photographer’s presence, but the guide does not quantify the effect of using one channel or the other on business outcomes.

Should I put prices on my photography website?
Match pricing information to the service. For a consumer-facing offer with a defined scope, a full session rate or starting price can set expectations; Colorlib’s examples include published wedding and portrait rates. For commercial work, a form can ask for the information needed to quote, such as intended usage, budget, image count, and timeframe. There is no single pricing format in the examples that applies to every photography business.
