A practical Go-and-yt-dlp downloader should accept a link on a small-screen page, process it as a bounded background job, and offer the file only when it is ready. Go handles the web service and job lifecycle; yt-dlp handles media extraction. Neither guarantees that every platform link will keep working, and platform rules and user rights constrain what the service should offer.

How should the download flow work?

Do not make a phone browser wait on one long HTTP request while a media file is extracted. A mobile connection can change or disappear, and a page refresh should not have to determine whether processing continues. A job-based flow separates the short request that starts work from the longer task that produces the file.

  1. Accept and validate a link. Show a labeled URL field, one clear submit action, and inline validation. Apply an application-level maximum URL length and reject malformed or disallowed input before starting a process.
  2. Create a job. Return a job identifier and an initial state such as queued or processing. Decide explicitly whether jobs are tied to a user, session, or short-lived token; do not make completed files publicly guessable.
  3. Run yt-dlp under limits. Start it as a managed child process, passing each option and the URL as separate arguments. Never build a shell command by concatenating user input. Bound runtime, output, concurrent jobs, download size, and temporary storage.
  4. Expose progress and errors. Let the page check job state by polling or another update mechanism. Use useful states such as queued, processing, complete, and failed, with actionable explanations for unsupported, private, or unavailable media; throttling; and processing failures.
  5. Offer and then remove the result. Make the file downloadable only after completion. Set a stated retention period, enforce it with cleanup, and remove partial files when a job fails or expires.

This is a design recommendation, not an architecture prescribed by Go. Go’s net/http documentation provides server timeouts, request contexts, request-size limiting, and other controls that can support the implementation.

Why use background jobs instead of one long request?

A synchronous request is simpler to sketch: receive a URL, run yt-dlp, and stream the result in the same response. But it couples the download to the phone’s connection and request lifetime. If the connection drops, cancellation and recovery behavior can become confusing, and long-running work can occupy server resources.

With a background job, the service can keep work alive across a page refresh if that is an intentional feature, and the page can reconnect to retrieve status. That requires job records, authorization for status and file access, cleanup, and limits on queued and active work. A job should not silently outlive its intended lifetime: give it its own bounded context, and terminate the yt-dlp process when that context expires. Use the incoming request context for request-scoped work; use a separate job context for work designed to survive the request.

How should Go manage requests and yt-dlp processes?

Set limits at the service boundary

Configure the HTTP server’s read and write timeouts and header limits, limit request bodies, and reject URLs beyond your chosen maximum length. Add product-specific caps for active jobs per user or IP, job duration, output size, and temporary disk use. The Go documentation supplies the mechanisms, not universally correct values; choose limits based on your deployment and workload.

Keep process execution controlled

Use Go’s process-management facilities to start yt-dlp with an explicit argument list and a context. Keep accepted formats and options under application control rather than exposing the full command surface to anonymous users. Capture and cap diagnostic output, record the yt-dlp version in operational logs, and avoid placing raw user-supplied URLs in logs or error pages without appropriate escaping and review.

Do not accept user cookies or credentials casually. If a legitimate use case requires them, it needs a deliberate security design and a lawful basis; otherwise, avoid collecting them. Make cancellation, timeout, and cleanup behavior explicit so an expired job cannot leave a process or partial file running indefinitely.

How should the mobile interface behave?

Keep the core task easy to complete on a narrow screen: paste a link, submit it, understand whether processing is underway, then save or share the finished file. Use visible status and error text rather than hover-dependent cues, and make controls comfortable to tap. Explain retries in plain language and preserve job status across reloads where feasible.

Only show file size or an expected wait when the service can estimate it honestly. Likewise, say that leaving the page will not cancel a job only if the implementation actually keeps queued work alive. These are design recommendations; no mobile usability comparison establishes one interface pattern as superior.

Polling or push updates?

Polling is straightforward to implement: the page asks for job status at intervals. Its trade-off is repeated requests, including when nothing has changed. Push updates can reduce status latency but add connection and server-management complexity. Choose based on the expected workload and operational capacity; no measured comparison establishes a universally better choice.

What can yt-dlp support—and what can it promise?

yt-dlp is a feature-rich command-line downloader with a large extractor collection and configurable format and extractor behavior. Its documentation includes service-specific arguments, including for YouTube and TikTok, but those options can change; do not treat them as a stable API contract. Pin a known release, record its version, update it deliberately, and retest representative links after upgrades.

The project’s supported-sites list is a starting point, not a guarantee. The project warns: “Not all sites listed here are guaranteed to work; websites are constantly changing and sometimes this breaks yt-dlp’s support for them.” It adds that the only reliable way to check whether a site works is to try it. A listed extractor can stop working when a platform changes, and a failure can also reflect private, unavailable, or throttled media rather than a permanently unsupported service.

Do not promise support for every social platform or present an extractor list as a service-level guarantee. Test links that matter to your intended users, distinguish transient errors from unsupported URLs where possible, and check the current yt-dlp documentation and relevant platform rules as part of maintenance.

What platform and rights limits apply?

There is no single legal answer established here for every downloader, platform, use, or jurisdiction. Google’s YouTube API Services policy guidance gives allowing users to download videos for offline play outside the YouTube Premium experience as an example of prohibited functionality in that API-services policy context. That specific policy statement should not be broadened into a universal legal conclusion.

Before launch, review each platform’s current terms and the rights applicable in the regions where the service will operate. Design the product for content users own or are authorized to download, and avoid implying that technical extraction capability itself grants permission.
