Build a Better Mana Curve: What Math Can Tell You—and What Judgment Must Decide

Use deterministic math to count cards and test whether a deck can cast spells on schedule; use strategic judgment to decide which cards belong in the deck and when they are likely to matter. A mana curve is a useful guide, not a universal formula—and there is no published head-to-head evidence here showing that an LLM or a calculation-based method builds better decks.

What a mana curve measures—and what it misses

A mana curve shows how a deck’s cards are distributed across mana costs. Counting cards by mana value is straightforward and reproducible: given the same list and counting rules, a spreadsheet or program will return the same distribution.

That count does not fully describe how a card plays. A card with a particular printed cost might be saved for a later turn, have an alternate use, or fill a role that does not match its nominal cost. Wizards of the Coast author Gavin Verhey advises builders to place cards where they expect to use them: “put cards on your mana curve wherever you think you are most likely to use them.” The distinction is between a card’s printed cost and the turn or situation in which it is useful.

Wizards’ mana primer puts the broader limitation plainly: “Like most things, the mana curve is not an exact science.” It says there is no “master formula”; the right mix depends on the available cards, the deck’s winning strategy, and what opponents are likely to do. What deterministic math can answer

Calculations are strongest when the question is specific and the assumptions are visible. A basic curve count describes the list. A more detailed model can examine questions such as whether the deck has enough lands, access to the required colors, or a reasonable chance of casting a particular spell by a target turn.

  • Descriptive counts: Count nonland cards by mana value and show the distribution.
  • Castability questions: Model draws and available mana to estimate whether a spell can be cast by a chosen turn, under explicit assumptions.
  • Color access: Account for the colors a spell requires, rather than treating every land as interchangeable.

These are different tasks. A curve chart does not by itself establish the probability of casting a spell on time. That estimate depends on how the model handles opening hands, draws, land drops, colors, mulligans, ramp, and other choices. State those assumptions before treating a result as meaningful.

An MTG simulator describes estimating intended-turn castability and identifying misses related to land count, color availability, or not drawing the spell. That is a description from the tool itself, not independent validation of its accuracy. See the simulator’s tool page.

What strategic judgment adds

Neither a tidy curve nor a probability estimate decides whether a card supports the deck’s plan. A low-cost card may be included for an early play, a later utility effect, or a role that matters only in a particular matchup. Likewise, a deck’s strategy may call for more expensive finishers or a greater concentration of cheap cards.

Use judgment—whether your own or an LLM’s—to interpret card roles, format, strategy, and expected use. Treat an LLM’s assessment as a hypothesis to check against the actual list and stated assumptions. Fluent commentary is not a measurement of deck performance, and the available evidence does not establish that LLM intuition improves results.

A practical workflow for checking a deck

  1. Count the list consistently. Make a reproducible baseline by counting nonland cards by mana value. Explain how you classify X costs, split or flexible costs, alternate costs, and lands so another person can reproduce the count.
  2. Describe the deck’s context. Note its format, strategy, colors, ramp, and card draw. Identify which cards you expect to use early and which are intended for later turns.
  3. Choose the question you want answered. If you want a descriptive curve, report the counts. If you want to know whether spells can be cast on schedule, model draws and mana availability under stated assumptions.
  4. Ask for strategic critique only after sharing the evidence. Give an LLM the deck list and assumptions, then check its factual claims and calculations against them. Do not mistake a confident recommendation for a tested outcome.
  5. Compare options on the same criteria. Consider format and game plan, card role and expected turn of use, land count and color access, ramp and card draw, and whether you are evaluating the curve itself or the probability of casting on time.

How much weight to give a Limited template

Wizards’ 2026 Reality Fracture prerelease guide offers a starting template for an average sealed deck: 1–2 one-mana cards, 7–8 two-mana cards, 5–6 three-mana cards, 3–4 four-mana cards, 2–3 five-mana cards, 0–1 six-mana card, plus 17 lands. The guide also says to adjust the template to the deck’s strategy: a slower controlling deck may want more expensive finishers, while an aggressive deck tends toward cheaper creatures. Those counts are a recent official example for an average sealed-deck context. They are not a rule for every Limited deck, and they should not be exported as a formula for Commander or Constructed. Use the template as a reference point only when its context fits, then adjust for the cards and plan in front of you.

Math versus LLM intuition: the useful division of labor

Deterministic calculations make counts and explicitly defined probability questions transparent and auditable. Strategic judgment interprets what those numbers mean for a deck’s plan. That division is a practical way to use the tools, not a conclusion from a controlled comparison: no source cited here directly tests LLM intuition against deterministic curve analysis or shows that either approach produces better decks or wins more games.
