Quick answer: the budget PS5 soundbar choice depends on your wiring
A PS5 does not require a special PlayStation soundbar. Sony states that players can use the console’s HDMI OUT port to connect to a TV or sound system. In practice, there are two sensible layouts:
- PS5 to TV, TV to soundbar: connect the console to a suitable HDMI input on the television, then connect the television’s ARC or eARC port to the soundbar. This is usually the simplest route and lets the TV remain the video switch.
- PS5 to soundbar, soundbar to TV: connect the console to an HDMI input on the soundbar and the bar’s HDMI output to the television. This can work well, but the soundbar must pass through the console’s video signal at the resolution, refresh rate and variable-refresh mode you intend to use.
For a low-cost setup, the first route is often safer when the TV has a functioning ARC/eARC port. A soundbar only needs to handle the audio return; it does not have to carry the PS5’s video signal. Use the second route only after checking the exact model’s passthrough specifications.

What “budget” should mean for this purchase
There is no single worldwide budget ceiling. Currency, taxes, sales and whether a subwoofer or rear speakers are included can change the total dramatically. Sony confirms that PS5 supports HDMI 2.1 and 4K/120Hz when paired with a compatible display. Those video capabilities are separate from sound quality. A bar can sound good while failing to pass a 120-Hz or variable-refresh signal, which is why the console-to-TV route is attractive for owners of a 4K/120-Hz gaming display.

ARC and eARC are the television’s audio-return paths. The labels are not interchangeable in capability: eARC generally provides a higher-bandwidth path, while ordinary ARC may impose format or bandwidth limits. Check the port label on the TV, the soundbar’s manual and the formats supported over that specific route. If the TV has only one ARC/eARC socket, reserve it for the soundbar and connect the PS5 to another suitable HDMI input.

4K/120Hz and VRR are pass-through questions
4K/120Hz describes a video mode and VRR describes variable-refresh behavior; neither is an audio specification. RTINGS’ connectivity testing uses a PS5 to check 4K/120Hz passthrough and HDMI Forum VRR behavior. Treat that as a reminder to inspect the exact input and output capabilities rather than assuming a bar with “HDMI” on the box will pass every signal. If the PS5 is connected directly to the TV, the soundbar’s lack of high-end video passthrough may not matter.

When a 5.1.4 package makes sense
- Your seating area has enough space for a subwoofer and satellites without blocking walkways.
- You want stronger bass and rear effects than a bar-only design can normally provide.
- You can place the satellites at useful angles and keep their wireless links and power cables reliable.
- Your TV and PS5 route can deliver the formats you intend to use.
When a simpler bar is the better buy
- The room is small, open-plan or shared with neighbours who would object to a large subwoofer.
- You cannot place rear speakers behind the seating position.
- You value easy installation and fewer power outlets over maximum immersion.
- Your TV has limited HDMI connectivity and you do not want to troubleshoot passthrough behavior.

Sony’s official PS5 FAQ lists maximum channel counts for supported formats, including Dolby Digital at 5.1 channels and Dolby Digital Plus at 7.1. Sony also documents Dolby Atmos and DTS:X for supported Blu-ray and Ultra HD Blu-ray disc video when the console is connected to a supported device. A separate Sony announcement describes Tempest 3D AudioTech output over compatible HDMI Dolby Atmos devices. These statements define compatibility conditions, not a promise that every soundbar will create the same three-dimensional impression.
Use the format your content and equipment can carry. A soundbar may advertise Atmos decoding, yet the TV’s ARC connection, the console setting or the particular app may send a different signal. Conversely, a system without an Atmos badge can still provide useful stereo or surround sound. Check the source device, TV audio path and bar input as one chain.
A practical buying checklist
- Map your ports. Write down the TV’s HDMI inputs, which one is ARC/eARC, the soundbar’s HDMI inputs and whether the display supports 4K/120Hz and VRR.
- Choose the signal route. Prefer PS5-to-TV when you want guaranteed direct video access and the TV can return suitable audio. Consider PS5-to-bar only when its passthrough specifications match your gaming modes.
- Choose the system layout. Decide between a standalone bar, bar plus subwoofer, or a package with satellites. Include floor area, power outlets and cable paths in the decision.
- Check format support end to end. Compare the PS5’s output options, the TV’s ARC/eARC capabilities and the bar’s accepted formats. Do not rely on the soundbar’s marketing label alone.

PS5 setup: exact menu path
After making the HDMI connections, configure the console before changing advanced soundbar modes.
- On the PS5 home screen, open Settings > Sound > Audio Output.
- Under Output Device, select the HDMI device that represents your TV or sound system.
- Set the HDMI Device Type to match the equipment. When using an AV-amplifier-style setup, Sony exposes channel-count and speaker-position settings; use the values that match the speakers you actually installed.
- Review Audio Format (Priority). Available choices can vary with the connected device and other settings, so select a format the entire chain supports rather than the most impressive-sounding name.
- Play a known game scene or disc chapter and adjust the bar’s input, volume and listening mode. Confirm that the TV has not switched to its own speakers.
If the TV is handling video and returning audio through ARC/eARC, enable the TV’s external-speaker or HDMI audio-output option and select the ARC/eARC socket. If the console is connected to the bar, choose the bar’s HDMI input and verify that the TV is receiving the bar’s HDMI output.

Troubleshooting: fix the common failures in order
No sound at all
- Check that neither the PS5, TV nor soundbar is muted and that each volume control is above zero.
- Return to Settings > Sound > Audio Output and confirm that the PS5 output device is an HDMI device, as Sony advises.
- Confirm the TV is set to external audio and that the HDMI cable is in the TV’s ARC/eARC port, not a standard input.
- Reseat both ends of the HDMI cable, then test another known-good cable if available.
- Power off the PS5, TV and bar, disconnect power briefly, reconnect the TV and bar first, then start the console.
- Check for firmware updates on the TV and soundbar; Sony includes cable and device-firmware checks in its troubleshooting guidance.
Picture works but sound does not
This usually means the video path is intact while the audio-return setting is wrong. Confirm the TV’s audio output is set to ARC/eARC or external receiver, select the correct bar input, and temporarily choose a basic audio format to isolate a decoding mismatch. Once sound works, re-enable the preferred format and test again.
Sound works but 4K/120Hz or VRR disappears
Bypass the bar temporarily: connect the PS5 directly to a compatible TV HDMI input and use ARC/eARC for audio. If the high-refresh or variable-refresh mode returns, the bar’s passthrough is the limiting link. Keep this wiring, or verify from the bar’s model-specific specifications that the required mode is supported on the exact HDMI input and output you are using.
Rear speakers or subwoofer drop out
- Check that every wireless unit is powered and paired according to its manual.
- Move the wireless units away from obvious interference and avoid hiding them inside a cabinet.
- Keep the satellites within a practical distance and give each speaker a clear placement relative to the seating area.
- Update firmware and repeat the pairing process if the connection remains intermittent.
Dialogue sounds thin or effects are overwhelming
Center the bar and keep it clear of the TV’s cabinet edge. Try the bar’s dialogue or night mode, reduce excessive bass, and verify that a virtual-surround mode has not been selected when you prefer a balanced stereo presentation. Room reflections and seating position can change the result as much as the mode name.
Placement and room-size decisions
Standalone bar
A single bar is easiest to place and has the lowest cable burden. Center it with the screen, aim it toward the seating position and avoid placing it far inside a shelf where the shelf edge can block or color the sound. Virtual surround processing works best when the room gives reflected sound surfaces, so an open room may not produce the same effect as a more enclosed layout.

Bar with subwoofer
Put the subwoofer on the floor with clearance around its vents. Bass is less directional than dialogue, so you can experiment with nearby positions, but avoid corners that create boomy notes. Keep the unit close enough to a power outlet and within the wireless link’s reliable range.
Bar with satellite speakers
Place the satellites to the sides or slightly behind the main seating position, at a similar height when practical. Do not put both speakers directly in front of the listener; that wastes the layout’s surround advantage. Secure power cables along walls or furniture edges so a walkway does not become a trip hazard.
Common buying mistakes to avoid
- Buying by channel count alone: 5.1.4 says how the system is arranged, not how clearly it plays voices or how well it fits your room.
- Assuming every HDMI port is equivalent: ARC/eARC, input bandwidth and passthrough limits differ by model and port.
- Routing the PS5 through an unverified bar: this can cost 4K/120Hz or VRR even though audio still works.
- Ignoring the complete package: optional rear speakers, a required subwoofer, taxes and delivery can change the real cost.
- Expecting every Atmos or 3D label to sound identical: source format, room acoustics, speaker placement and the connection route all affect the result.
- Forgetting the TV’s ARC socket: connecting the cable to an ordinary HDMI input will not create an audio return path.
