For most public merchant checkouts, use clearnet. Customers, browser wallets, webhooks, and third-party services generally expect a normal DNS name and HTTPS URL. Tor becomes attractive when BTCPay Server runs at home or in an office behind restrictive NAT, when publishing the server’s origin IP is undesirable, or when obtaining a stable public Lightning address is difficult. A hybrid design can keep the BTCPay host private while exposing only a selected payment gateway or API through a hardened reverse proxy.
Tor is not an anonymity switch. BTCPay’s documentation says it does not route every service connection through Tor and does not make a deployment anonymous against a targeted attacker. Choose the network design that matches your customers, integrations, and threat model, then test the complete payment path on the networks your users actually use.

What the choice changes
“Tor versus clearnet” is not simply a speed setting. It determines how customers reach checkout, how webhooks reach your server, which IP addresses are visible, and how much infrastructure you must operate.

- Clearnet publishes a conventional HTTPS service through a domain name. It is the compatibility-first design for public stores.
- Tor-first publishes selected BTCPay services as onion services. It can avoid inbound port forwarding and hide the BTCPay host’s IP from clients using Tor.
- Hybrid keeps the backend reachable through Tor or a private LAN while a public reverse proxy forwards only selected requests to the onion service.
BTCPay’s deployment FAQ describes Tor mainly as a way to simplify home or office hosting. It can remove the need to open several firewall ports, configure NAT port redirection, create a DNS record for an HTTPS certificate, and maintain a fixed public IP for Lightning. Those conveniences do not remove the need to secure BTCPay, its plugins, wallets, webhooks, Bitcoin node, and Lightning implementation.

How clearnet hosting works
A clearnet deployment gives customers a normal address such as a domain-backed HTTPS checkout. The domain resolves to the public endpoint you operate, which may be the BTCPay host itself or a separate reverse proxy.
Required pieces
- A domain or subdomain that you control.
- HTTPS with a valid certificate.
- Firewall rules and, where applicable, NAT port forwarding.
- A reverse proxy configured with the headers BTCPay expects.
- Deliberate exposure rules for BTCPay, Bitcoin, Lightning, webhook, and administrative services.
BTCPay recommends its official Docker deployment for self-hosted production. A custom installation requires careful review of the reverse proxy, PostgreSQL, NBXplorer, Bitcoin node, and Lightning implementation. Treat each of those components as part of the public attack surface when its port or API is reachable from outside.
When clearnet is the practical default
Use clearnet when shoppers should be able to pay from an ordinary browser without installing or configuring Tor. It is also the safer compatibility choice when an exchange, accounting system, wallet tool, or payment webhook cannot reach an onion address. Conventional HTTPS makes certificate validation, DNS troubleshooting, uptime monitoring, and support processes familiar to most operators.
How Tor-first hosting works
BTCPay can publish onion addresses for selected services. A customer or integration connects through the Tor network, while the BTCPay host can remain on a private LAN without an inbound connection from the public internet.
What Tor solves
- NAT and CGNAT: You may not need inbound port forwarding when the server is at home or in an office.
- Origin-IP exposure: Tor clients see the onion service rather than the BTCPay host’s public IP.
- Fixed-address problems: A residential connection does not need a stable public IP for the onion address to remain usable.
- Reduced perimeter configuration: Fewer public firewall openings can mean fewer exposed services.
What Tor does not solve
BTCPay’s architecture documentation states that Tor provides hidden services and selected onion connectivity; it does not route every service connection through Tor and does not make the deployment anonymous against a targeted attacker. BTCPay’s FAQ is even more direct: activating Tor does not stop others from connecting to the instance website, Bitcoin node, or Lightning node in clear, and it does not make the operator anonymous.

Plugins or adjacent services may still make clearnet connections. Application accounts, invoice data, webhook destinations, browser fingerprints, payment timing, DNS records, TLS certificates, and Lightning activity can all create identifying metadata. Tor hides the origin network address from Tor clients; it does not erase identifiers created by the application.
Operational implications
Every shopper and integration must be able to use Tor. A browser without Tor support, a webhook provider that only accepts public HTTPS, or a wallet that cannot resolve onion addresses may fail even though BTCPay itself is healthy. Onion reachability can also be harder for support staff to diagnose than standard HTTPS. A Tor-first design therefore needs a documented access path for administrators and a tested fallback for critical operations.

A hybrid design is useful when the BTCPay server should stay behind Tor or on a private LAN, but a conventional HTTPS endpoint is required for a payment page, API, or selected webhook flow. The public proxy receives clearnet requests and forwards the permitted traffic to the BTCPay onion service.
Documented prerequisites
- A VPS with root access.
- A domain or subdomain for the public endpoint.
- Nginx.
- socat.
- A valid Let’s Encrypt certificate for the clearnet-facing domain.
BTCPay’s reverse-proxy-to-Tor procedure identifies three benefits: no port forwarding on the host’s LAN, an encrypted connection, and hiding the host’s IP. The proxy does not make the VPS or the backend automatically secure; it adds another system whose patches, logs, credentials, firewall, and monitoring must be maintained.
Implementation sequence
- Separate roles. Decide which requests truly need public access. Keep administration, node RPC, wallet controls, and internal dashboards off the public route unless a specific integration requires them.
- Prepare the VPS. Install a supported Nginx and socat configuration, restrict SSH, apply updates, and allow only the ports needed for HTTPS and administration.
- Configure DNS and TLS. Point the chosen domain to the VPS and issue a Let’s Encrypt certificate. Confirm renewal before putting the endpoint into production.
- Connect to the onion service. Configure the proxy to reach the selected BTCPay onion address. Preserve the headers and request methods required by the application, and avoid forwarding arbitrary paths by default.
- Limit exposure. Add access controls, request-size limits, rate limits, and logging appropriate to the payment and API paths. Do not publish internal node or management endpoints just because the proxy can reach them.
- Test from outside. Complete a checkout, receive a webhook, confirm invoice status, and verify any Lightning or wallet workflow from a network that cannot reach the private LAN directly.
The hybrid model is not a magic privacy layer. The public domain, certificate, proxy logs, webhook destinations, and timing metadata can still identify the operator or business. Its specific advantage is compartmentalization: customers see the proxy address while the BTCPay host’s address remains behind Tor.

Privacy trade-offs in detail
| Consideration | Clearnet | Tor-first | Hybrid proxy |
|---|---|---|---|
| Address visible to customers | Public domain and the IP of the server or proxy | Onion address; the BTCPay origin IP is hidden from Tor clients | Public domain and proxy IP; backend host IP can remain hidden |
| NAT and inbound ports | Usually requires reachable firewall rules and, for private networks, NAT forwarding | Can avoid inbound forwarding for the private host | No port forwarding needed on the host LAN when following BTCPay’s documented pattern |
| Application anonymity | Not provided | Not provided; BTCPay says Tor is not system-wide anonymity | Not provided; proxy, DNS, TLS, and application metadata remain |
| Integration compatibility | Broadest compatibility with ordinary browsers and webhooks | Limited to clients and services that support Tor | Public clients use HTTPS while the backend uses Tor |
| Infrastructure to maintain | DNS, TLS, firewall, reverse proxy, and public host | Tor service plus BTCPay, node, Lightning, plugins, and private-network controls | All backend components plus VPS, Nginx, socat, TLS, and proxy security |
Does Tor hide your IP?
It hides the BTCPay host’s origin IP from clients connecting through the onion service. It does not hide the IP of a public reverse proxy, and it does not prevent a determined observer from correlating application-level information, a separate clearnet endpoint, DNS records, or operational mistakes. If any service remains publicly reachable, that service can disclose an address independently of the onion endpoint.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesMetadata still matters
Review every place an address appears: invoice links, QR-code pages, browser redirects, webhook configuration, Lightning node announcements, support documentation, certificate transparency records, and monitoring dashboards. Tor reduces one class of network exposure; it does not remove these application and operational traces.
Reliability, latency, and customer experience
No controlled latency, uptime, or payment-success benchmark establishes that Tor or clearnet is universally faster or more reliable. BTCPay’s published documentation does not provide a percentage comparison, so a general performance claim would be misleading.
In practice, reliability depends on the exact client, Tor path, residential connection, VPS, DNS, proxy, node synchronization, Lightning liquidity, and webhook retry behavior. Clearnet is usually easier for ordinary browsers and external services because they already understand HTTPS and DNS. Tor can be more dependable than residential port forwarding when the ISP uses CGNAT, blocks inbound connections, or changes the public IP.
Measure your own payment path
- Open the checkout from a normal residential or mobile connection.
- Open the same checkout through Tor and record whether assets, redirects, and payment instructions load.
- Create an invoice and pay it on-chain and, where used, through Lightning.
- Confirm that BTCPay changes invoice state and that the customer sees the expected result.
- Send every production webhook and verify signature validation, retries, and duplicate-event handling.
- Test wallet creation, refunds, and administrative actions from the operator networks you actually use.
- Repeat after restarting Tor, the proxy, BTCPay, the Lightning implementation, and the host network connection.
Record timestamps and failure symptoms rather than assuming that a slow page is a Tor problem. DNS mistakes, a stale certificate, an unavailable onion service, blocked outbound connections, an unsynchronized Bitcoin node, or a webhook provider’s policy can produce similar symptoms.

Security and maintenance requirements
Keep the entire stack current
Update BTCPay Server, Bitcoin Core, the Lightning implementation, the reverse proxy, Tor, the operating system, and plugins on a planned schedule. Read release notes before updating production, especially when a release changes networking, authentication, or payment handling.
BTCPay Server 2.4.5 added Lightning and LNURL hardening and performance improvements. Its release note says administrators who rely on Tor should explicitly enable the relevant Tor functionality after updating. Treat that as a configuration check, not as proof that every existing deployment has the same setting.
Review exposed endpoints after every network change
- List listening ports on the host and VPS.
- Check firewall and security-group rules against the intended public surface.
- Verify that Bitcoin RPC, Lightning administration, database access, and BTCPay management pages are not exposed accidentally.
- Inspect reverse-proxy routes and forwarded headers.
- Confirm that plugins and background jobs use the intended network path.
- Review logs for unexpected source addresses, authentication failures, and repeated webhook errors.
Protect credentials and secrets
An onion URL does not protect credentials or application data if BTCPay, a plugin, the proxy, or an administrator workstation is compromised. Use unique credentials, least-privilege API keys, encrypted backups, and a recovery procedure that does not depend on one browser session or one network path.
BTCPay issued an advisory for operators who exposed LND through a reverse proxy, Tor service, forwarded port, or another external route: those operators were instructed to rotate credentials and update. If your Lightning endpoint has ever been reachable through one of those routes, check the advisory’s affected conditions and rotate exposed secrets rather than merely changing the URL.
Decision guide
| Choose | Best fit | Accept the trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Clearnet | Public stores, conventional browser checkout, webhooks, and integrations that require standard HTTPS | You must operate DNS, TLS, firewall rules, a stable endpoint, and deliberate public exposure |
| Tor-first | Home or office hosting behind restrictive NAT, a strong preference not to publish the origin IP, and users or tools that support onion services | Some customers and integrations cannot connect; troubleshooting and fallback access require more planning |
| Hybrid | A private BTCPay backend with selective public access to a payment gateway or API | You operate and secure an additional VPS, Nginx, socat, TLS certificate, proxy policy, and monitoring layer |
Compare the options on four axes before deploying: client and webhook reachability, origin-IP privacy, operational complexity, and failure recovery. Give reliability the weight your business requires, but validate it with your own checkout and webhook tests because the documentation provides no universal benchmark.

Practical checklists
Clearnet launch checklist
- Domain DNS resolves to the intended public endpoint.
- HTTPS certificate is valid and renews automatically.
- Reverse-proxy headers and WebSocket or long-lived request behavior match BTCPay requirements.
- Only required BTCPay, webhook, and payment routes are public.
- Bitcoin and Lightning administrative interfaces are restricted.
- Checkout, invoice status, webhooks, Lightning, refunds, and backups are tested externally.
Tor-first launch checklist
- Onion addresses are documented for each selected service.
- Every customer-facing browser and integration has Tor support.
- No assumption is made that plugins or node connections are automatically routed through Tor.
- Private-LAN firewall rules block unwanted inbound traffic.
- Operators have a tested administrative route and offline recovery credentials.
- Checkout and webhook flows are tested from Tor and from each required integration network.
Hybrid launch checklist
- VPS root access is protected and the operating system is updated.
- Nginx, socat, and the Let’s Encrypt certificate are installed and monitored.
- The proxy forwards only selected paths to the onion service.
- Proxy logs avoid unnecessary sensitive data and are retained securely.
- Rate limits, access controls, and alerting are enabled.
- Proxy failure, onion-service failure, certificate expiry, and backend restart scenarios have documented recovery steps.
Troubleshooting by symptom
Customers cannot open the checkout
First determine whether the failure affects clearnet, Tor, or both. For clearnet, check DNS, certificate validity, firewall rules, and reverse-proxy routing. For Tor, verify that the onion address is current, the client is actually using Tor, and the selected BTCPay service is published. A hybrid failure may be isolated to the VPS, Nginx, socat connection, or TLS configuration even when the private BTCPay host is healthy.
Checkout loads but payment status does not update
Inspect the webhook route, signature validation, retries, and BTCPay invoice state. Confirm that the webhook provider can reach the chosen endpoint; a provider that cannot access onion services needs a public route or a different integration design. Check node synchronization and Lightning connectivity before changing the Tor configuration.
Lightning works internally but not for customers
Separate the Lightning node’s connectivity from the checkout’s reachability. Review whether the node endpoint is unintentionally exposed, whether the client can reach the advertised address, and whether a recent BTCPay update changed Tor-related settings. Do not open additional ports as a first reaction; identify the exact component that cannot connect.

Audit DNS, certificate records, old documentation, monitoring services, proxy headers, Lightning announcements, and any parallel clearnet endpoint. Tor only hides the origin for traffic that uses the onion service. Remove obsolete records, restrict routes, and rotate credentials if an administrative or Lightning endpoint was exposed.
Bottom line for most operators
Use clearnet when your priority is the broadest customer and integration compatibility and you can responsibly operate a public HTTPS service. Use Tor-first when NAT, a changing residential address, or origin-IP exposure is the central problem and your users can support onion access. Use the documented hybrid reverse proxy when you need a conventional public checkout but want the BTCPay backend kept behind Tor or a private LAN. In every case, privacy claims must be scoped to the specific endpoint, and payment reliability must be demonstrated by testing your own complete flow.
