BT announced on 5 October 2026 that it had acquired TalkTalk Telecommunications Limited and PlatformX Communications Limited out of TalkTalk Group’s administration. BT says the move is intended to keep services running for about 2.5 million retail and wholesale customers. For most TalkTalk customers, BT’s current guidance is that nothing changes immediately: existing services, prices, contracts, billing and equipment remain in place. The acquisition is subject to a UK public-interest review, and its outcome and longer-term effects are not yet established.
What BT acquired and why it stepped in
BT said it acquired TalkTalk Telecommunications Limited and PlatformX Communications Limited from the administration of TalkTalk Group on 5 October 2026. The deal followed an unsuccessful prolonged sale process for TalkTalk’s consumer and wholesale operations, according to BT. BT said it intervened because of the risk of service disruption if the businesses collapsed. BT’s acquisition announcement describes the transaction and its rationale.

BT says the acquired operations served approximately 2.5 million customers: 1.5 million retail customers and 1 million wholesale customers. It also cited vulnerable households and connections supporting health, emergency services, defence, education, transport, banking and government. These figures and the account of the risk are BT’s characterisation, not independently established findings.

What changes for TalkTalk customers now?
BT’s customer FAQ says most TalkTalk customers do not need to take action. Immediately after the acquisition, existing services, contract commitments, prices, billing, support channels, phone numbers and equipment remain unchanged. BT says it does not anticipate an interruption because of the acquisition. That is the company’s current guidance, not a guarantee about future events. See BT’s TalkTalk customer information.
- Service and contract: Keep using your existing service under your current contract.
- Price and billing: BT says current prices and billing arrangements remain unchanged immediately.
- Support and phone numbers: Existing support channels and numbers remain in place for now.
- Router and other equipment: BT says existing equipment can continue to be used; it has not told customers they need to replace it.
These statements address the immediate position. They do not establish what packages, prices, or arrangements may be offered after the review or any later decisions.

What wholesale PlatformX customers should know
BT says wholesale PlatformX customers should continue using existing service, ordering, billing, support and contractual processes unless they are formally advised otherwise. Existing contractual arrangements and applicable service-level commitments remain in place, according to BT. Wholesale customers should follow direct notices from their account contacts or BT rather than assume that the retail guidance covers every operational detail.

The Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport published a public-interest intervention notice concerning BT’s acquisition on 5 October 2026. The department’s notice listing confirms the notice’s subject and date and links to the relevant documents.

BT says a regulatory review is expected over the coming weeks. While it proceeds, BT and TalkTalk will remain separate businesses and continue to compete, according to BT. The publication of the notice does not itself establish the review’s eventual decision, detailed timetable, or what conditions—if any—might apply. The available public statements also do not settle a final integration plan.
How large is the financial commitment?
BT estimates the acquisition will have a total cash impact of approximately £400 million in FY27. BT says this estimate combines the consideration, transaction and administration costs, working-capital impacts, an estimated approximately £60 million loss for the remainder of the year, and approximately £100 million otherwise due to Openreach. It is an estimate, not a confirmed final cost or a figure that represents only the purchase price. The components are set out in BT’s announcement.

BT also said TalkTalk had generated approximately £1.2 billion in revenue over the previous 12 months and was loss-making. Those figures describe the business, not the value of the acquired operations or a forecast of their performance under BT.
What remains uncertain
- The public-interest review’s outcome and any associated conditions.
- Whether, when or how BT may integrate the acquired businesses after the review.
- Any later changes to customer prices, packages, contracts, support arrangements or corporate structure.
For now, customers can rely on BT’s immediate continuity guidance while waiting for formal updates about any later changes.
